Roy Wood has been a most significant inspiration for me since I was about 12...

Pick up any musical instrument, work out how to get a few notes in tune out of it.. press 'Record', play an overdub....!!!!! 😎

Richard Thompson also plays hurdy-gurdy (which he built himself), mandolin and mandola.

When I saw Hautbois (many years ago) I'm sure Rick played 'Cello for the Victorian era - using a strap arrangement so he could play stood up.

Richard Thompson used to play guitar sitting on an amplifier and playing bass notes on an organ pedalboard. He plays accordion too, but not at the same time.

The best bagpipe riff of all time :-) is by Roy Wood on the last bars of "Are You Ready To Rock?" - a wonderful pastiche of '50s rock'n roll. You think the song's finished - and then in come the bagpipes!

Brian Miller (ex Battlefield Band)
He's known as a fiddler but played just about every instrument known to mankind. Once when the band were saying at my place for a gig in Ullapool he picked up my 5- string and started playing good blue grass stuff.
Another is Phill Cunningham; Every time I see him on tellie he's playing something else. He was playing a flute at the opening of the new Scottish Parliament cermony.
Malcolm Jones of Runrig is an excellent Piper.
I suppose I could go on and on.

When my two sisters in law came to visit we took them to the local folk club to see Vin Garbutt, he amazed them by playing the William Tell Overture on the whistle, he amazed me too.

Glen Campbell played the bagpipes on his Bonaparte's Retreat. He's been playing them for a HECK of a long time. Hadn't been aware he's been keeping it up though.

James Rivers is a well-respected long-time saxophonist on the local New Orleans contemporary jazz scene. He's also played plenty of rhythm-and-blues gigs and studio dates, but is best known as a "post-bop" jazz player.

James has a full size set of Scottish-type bagpipes and sometimes plays a couple of jazz numbers on them in the middle of his saxophone set. I've witnessed this a couple of times at the annual Jazz Festival, and I know he does it at occasional nightclub gigs, too.

I think he makes it point to avoid anything too harmonically complex, because the bagpipe drone never sounds too terribly out of place. It's pretty amazing to hear music that sounds more-or-less like John Coltrane's coming out -- loud! -- from that exotic instrument -- exotic, that is, in the context of a jazz trio or quartet (upright bass, drum kit, and maybe piano).

Oh how true about Vin!

One of his early albums was called "The Young Tin-Whistle Pest"

Paul McCartmey plays ukelele ( I think he probably caught the 'bug' from George Harrison who was (apparently) a first class player

Though it doesn't happen often (if ever, nowadays) but Billy Connolly is a handy banjo picker (always was but his 'wee sweary' act took over)

And........ anyone who has ever watched my old buddy Leadfungus play banjo & guitar can only be 'gobsmacked' by the superb and sensitive whistle player that HE is

A bit obvious, perhaps, but the first time I saw Vin Garbutt he'd been variously described to me as a comedian, a superb songwriter, a great singer and a pretty decent guitarist, but no-one had seen fit to mention his whistle playing. It blew me away! He makes the instrument really sing!

comedic stageshow playing to the demands and expectations
of his mostly 'senior citizen' light-entertainment culture
regular fans..

then at a point in the middle of the show
when you think you cant stand it any longer
and should just walk out and write off the cost of the ticket..

he picks up his mandolin
and leads the band into a storming heavy folk rock performance,
easily the equal to fairport convention,
and a reminder of his pre-comedy stardom days
as a much respected UK rock'n'roll session guitarist..

Glen Campbell was in town { Ft Worth Texas } the other day. The review in the paper was very favorable. He's a great guitar player even though { in my opinion } he's played a lot of schlock. But the biggest suprise for me was that the reviewer said that Campbell closed his concert by playing "Amazing Grace" - on the bagpipes ! Are there any other musicians out there that have suprised you by playing an instrument that you weren't expecting ?
