Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Avondale (Behan) From: GUEST,Roderick A Warner Date: 05 Oct 24 - 05:39 AM Mentioned slightly upthread: the Al O’ Donnell version. One of my favourite singers from the dim and distant. Saw him in Nottingham and environs and later a couple of times on the Slatterys Capel Street Sunday morning sessions in Dublin. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Avondale (Behan) From: Gabriel Date: 03 Oct 24 - 06:13 AM Unfortunately, the DT lyrics have multiple errors, if one takes the words sung by the author, Dominic Behan, on the Rebellion LP. The order of the verses also differs, as indeed does the title of the song. On the album it is titled 'Parnell'. The original words as sung by the author are below with the erroneous wording in brackets. The order of verses has also been corrected. Oh have you been to Avondale And (wandered) lingered in (the) her lovely vale (Where) While tall trees whisper(all)low the tale Of Avondale's proud eagle Long years that green and lovely (vale) glade (Has) Had nursed Parnell, (our) her grandest Gael And cursed the land that (has) had betrayed (Fair) Bright Avondale's proud eagle Where (fame) pride and ancient glory (fate) fade Such was the land where he was laid Like Christ was thirty pieces paid For Avondale's proud eagle |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Avondale From: MARINER Date: 25 Nov 04 - 06:35 PM I think you're correct Mark, they are also the words used by Al O'Donnell on his excellent recording of the song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Avondale From: Mark Cohen Date: 25 Nov 04 - 03:19 PM I believe the words in the DT should be Where tall trees whisper low the tale and Where fame and ancient glory fade This is based on my memory of the Mick Moloney recording, so those may be wrong, and there may be other errors I've missed. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sweet Avondale From: Kevin Sheils Date: 25 Nov 04 - 11:02 AM There is another song on subject of Parnell called the "Blackbird of Sweet Avondale" sung by Geordie Hanna on a Topic CD Celtic Voices, although there he's listed as George whereas I usually see him listed as Geordie. It's based, I beieve on a Jacobite song The Royal Blackbird but with Parnell symbolised as The Blackbird rather than James Stewart |
