Subject: Lyr Add: TIDEWAVE (Annie Briggs) From: GUEST,MCP Date: 23 Nov 04 - 08:54 AM Here are the words from Robin Dransfield's Tidewave LP. Mick TIDEWAVE (Annie Briggs) Oh, you came to stay and the day was brighter, The way much lighter. You brought your joy, your music too, We'd laugh and sing and play the Summer through. And with time and faces your love for all things grew But the day was growing colder, cold Winter reaching you. And the words of a song were the only exception To your lonely reflection. You brought so much and your friends to me With your friends you tried to share your own eternity. And nobody knowing how you wanted things to be, But the day was growing darker and you couldn't really see. And when the fortune-teller spoke, you held lightly in your hand The mirror of your mind, Which you thought to be true to when you'd see The days ahead were nothing but transparency. An image of the no-man's land, the sun at the edge of the sea, Tides came and departed, took you away from me. Oh, you came to stay and the day was brighter The way much lighter. You brought your joy, your music too, We'd laugh and sing and play the Summer through. And with time and faces your love for all things grew But the day was growing colder, cold Winter reaching you. Source: Robin Dransfield LP, Tidewave The sleeve notes say: "TIDEWAVE is by the elusive Annie Briggs who wrote it, I think, for Johnny Moynihan. It has a sympathy which reminds me of those who have seen others, especially me, through the hard times. Too numerous to mention" |
Subject: RE: lyrics for 'tidewave' From: Juan P-B Date: 23 Nov 04 - 01:55 PM Tidewave is a great song on a great album but one of my faves on there is "Fair Maids Of February" Such a lovely song that I think if I'd written it I'd probably feel like never writing another song, ever! Juan P-B |
Subject: RE: lyrics for 'tidewave' From: The Borchester Echo Date: 23 Nov 04 - 03:20 PM Robin Dransfield's songwriting has been, to an extent, eclipsed by that of brother Barry. Fair Maids of February is indeed a lovely song, as is the extraordinarily sensitive It's Dark in Here. What's truly amazing about the album Tidewave, a quarter of a century on, is how ahead of its time it was with the use of the White Shield Brass ensemble, the hurdy-gurdy of Christian Gourhan and Lea Nicholson's concertina. I've asked Topic about a CD reissue of this, and of Barry's Bowin' and Scrapin' but there are not, unfortunately, 'any plans' to do so. |

Subject: RE: lyrics for 'tidewave' From: Juan P-B Date: 24 Nov 04 - 01:49 PM Aye! Topic should maybe have a serious rethink! There is an amazing 'Dransfields' almost boxed set available at the moment but 'Tidewave' (the album) should be CD available Maybe we should start a "Get Topic To Reissue 'Tidewave'" thread What think you all?? |
Subject: RE: lyrics for 'tidewave' From: The Borchester Echo Date: 24 Nov 04 - 02:25 PM A mass march on Stroud Green to give Tony Engle a serious talking to might do it. That and persuading Bros Dransfield to do a few gigs... |

Subject: RE: lyrics for 'tidewave' From: Juan P-B Date: 25 Nov 04 - 12:20 PM Well let's go for it!!! I know that Gary Blakely of "Band Of Two" is a mate of Barry D's so I will 'suss' things in that direction. In The Meantime go to http://www.topicrecords.co.uk/ and let them know I will start a new thread on this too Hasta Lumbago Juan P-B |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tidewave (Annie Briggs) From: GUEST,David E. Date: 23 Feb 11 - 01:49 PM No doubt old news for those who were looking for it but Robin Dransfields' Tidewave album is available on cd as part of a two cd set called "A Lighter Touch." Still sounds great. David E. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tidewave (Annie Briggs) From: GUEST,Derek Schofield Date: 23 Feb 11 - 06:43 PM I talked to Robin Dransfield at the BBC Folk Awards. No plans for a Dransfield duo reunion, but perhaps Robin could be tempted out of his Cornish retirement. Derek |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Tidewave (Annie Briggs) From: Commander Crabbe Date: 24 Feb 11 - 06:31 AM From a previous thread posted by TerriM in 2000 Fair maids of February, why don't you come out today? Fair maids of February, why don't you come out to play? Oh we've seen you, oh, we've seen you When the air was sweet and made us grow From the fastness of winter, the first flower to venture And now we're lying beneath the snow Our dresses are torn and tattered, There's nothing here you'd wish to see Our faces are lined with sorrow I'm sure you would agree We used to love dancing, we used to love dancing So many. many years ago But with no-one to court us, our courage has left us And now we're dying beneath the snow But we are rooted, we are your children We don't have the power to choose So take heed in February, or your fate will be like ours Oh, we told you, oh, we told you So many, many times before But you didn't believe us and you'll never believe us And now we're dying beneath the snow CC |
