No lyrics yet, but this page has a brief history of St. Laurence:

LAWRENCE O'TOOLE

Also known as
Laurence O'Toole; Lorcan Ua Tuathail
Memorial
14 November
Profile
Son of the chief of Hy Murray. Taken as a hostage by King Dermot McMurrogh Leinster in 1138 when he was ten years old; Dermot later married Lawrence's sister Mor. Released in 1140 at age twelve to the Bishop of Glendalough, and raised and educated at the monastic school there. Monk at Glendalough. Abbot of Glendalough in 1153. Declined the bishopric of Glendalough in 1160, citing his unworthiness. Ordered to accept the archbishopic of Dublin in 1161, he became the first native-born Irishman to hold the see.

Reformed much of the administration and clerical life in his diocese. Worked to restore and rebuild Christ Church cathedral. As archbishop he accepted the imposition onto Ireland of the English form of liturgy in 1172. Noted for his personal austerity, he wore a hair shirt under his ecclesiastical robes, made an annual 40 day retreat in Saint Kevin's cave, never ate meat, fasted every Friday, and never drank wine - though he would color his water to make it look like wine and not bring attention to himself at table. Acted as peacemaker and mediator at the second seige of Dublin in 1170.

In 1171 he travelled to Canterbury, England on diocesan business. While preparing for Mass there he was attacked by a lunatic who wanted to make Lawrence another Saint Thomas Beckett. Everyone in the church thought Lawrence had been killed by the severe blow to the head. Instead he asked for water, blessed it, and washed the wound; the bleeding stopped, and the archbishop celebrated Mass.

Negotiated the 1175 Treaty of Windsor which made upstart Irish king Rory O'Connor and vassal of king Henry II of England, but ended combat. Attended the General Lateran Council in Rome in 1179. Papal legate to Ireland. Died while travelling with King Henry II, a trip taken as a peacemaker and on behalf of Rory O'Conner. It resulted in his imprisonment and ill-treatment by the king who decided he had had his fill of meddling priests.
Born
1128 at Castledermot, County Kildare, Ireland
Died
14 November 1180 at Eu, diocese of Rouen, Normandy, France of natural causes; buried at the abbey church at Eu; so many miracles were reported at his tomb that his relics were soon translated a place of honour before the altar; his heart was removed and returned to Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland
Canonized
1225 by Pope Honorius III
Patronage
archdiocese of Dublin, Ireland

It's also the name of the school in Dublin that Luke Kelly attended. (Sorry I don't know the song).

Do we have any Joyce in the matter? That said, there is at least one song on the holy gentleman. Was it done by the Fureys?

Finbar Furey wrote ST. LAURENCE O'TOOLE. The Fureys' recording can be heard on 2 "various artists" albums: "Irish Memories" (1988) and "Greetings from Ireland" (1997). Here's what I was able to transcribe from a sound sample:

...To a prince of Leinster you were born, the son of Morris O'Toole
There were many children born that year, but God had chosen you, you,
God had chosen you.

You were given....

Arrr... Mick,

This must be a case for the Irish - they can pinch (sorry ... recycle ... ) anything else - how come they can't come up with the words for a song from one of their established groups ... about the patron saint of Dublin ...

That said, I think a CD I have is a repackaging of that Dublin Millenium Concert - and this title rings a bell. I'll see if I can unearth it ... when I get home - and then see if I can understand enough to post!

Regards,

Bob

From: Bob Bolton

G'day Mick,

It was on a re-released "Music World" CD: A Hour of Irish Gold, MWCH-6016, 1989, Hughes Leisure Group, Avondale, Auckland, NZ.

St Laurence O'Toole

St Laurence O'Toole of dear Dublin Town, good people, remember his name.
Patron Saint of this city we love, we'll always honour your fame.
To a Prince of Leinster you were born, the son of Morris O'Toole.
There were many children born that year, but God had chosen you, you,
God had chosen you..

You were given, then to a tyrant king, when you were but a boy.
While filling your frame with God's own love, His wonders and his joy.
This king, he ruled old Erin's Isle, with cruel fist and iron sword,
He tried to change your love for God - the One whom you adored, adored,
The One whom you adored.

But your father he heard of these terrible deeds and your fate on which they mocked.
He took you from that unholy place to the Abbey in Glendalough.
The Abbot there, who taught you, when first he saw your face
He knew that God had sent you - in time to take his place, his place;
In time to take his place.

But you died Archbishop, in Normandy, far across the sea,
Far from the people and the city you loved, in exile, your soul it went free.
You were kind and gentle, Saint Laurence O'Toole, your faith and love profound;
Archbishop and Abbot, patron Saint of the people of dear Dublin town, town,
The people of dear Dublin town, town.

Enjoy Already!

(I think it's fairly accurate ...)

Regards,

Bob

Oops!

I should have made a heading "Lyrics Add:" ... so that the good Brother Joseph might have the opportunity to 'harvest' the words ... and, I guess, I should say that the only credit I can find is:

- The Fureys and Davey Arthur.

Oh yes ... and I have doubts about: "This king, he ruled old Erin's Isle ..." and I could, just, believe it as : "This king, he ruled o'er Leinster's Isle ..." - but what do I know of Ireland's geography .. ?

Regard(les)s,

Bob

G'day Martin,

My brain said it should be "Erin" (even if the vllian was "King Dermot McMurrogh Leinster" ... but my ears said: "Wha ... he say ... ?". I'll go along with whatever you Paddys say it is!

Regards,

Bob of the Antipodes (Hey ... my only traceable Irish ancestry is one great, great grandmother - 'though her descendants claims she was Ned Kelly's aunt ... and that's a close enough brush with Australian sainthood for me!)

Yeah, Bob, but being Irish is like being Black. If you have one drop, you are. hahahahahaha

I am very grateful for this. I have the song bouncing around my head, can hear the tune, but have not been able to find the words or the album. Now I have the words, and know how to order. I will be doing this one at The Getaway. Good man you are!!!

The Mudcat strikes again!!!

All the very best,

Mick

Thanks, Bob. That album is a repackaging of the Dublin Millenium Album. The tracks, as I recall them, are all the same and done by the same performers in honor of Dublin's Millenium Celebration.

wow! I have a K-Tel CD -

The Official Millenium CD Dublin Songs (K-Tel Ireland, 1988) & it only cost me $5 when I bought it a few years ago. I think Sanity was getting rid of old stock.

Track 7 - St Laurence O'Toole (F. Furey. Pub. Banshee Music) The Fureys and Davey Arthur. Unfortunately there are no lyrics on the leaflet.

G'day,

Mick: Do you mean that my CD "... is a repackaging of the Dublin Millenium Album ..." (which is what I had concluded some time back) ... or that some desperate music (re-)publisher is now trying to milk the last drops out of the Dublin Millenium Concert ... by repackaging it as Irish Pub Songs ... ? ... ! ... ?

Sandra: That's the same track number as on my CD - so they are probably of identical content.

Regards,

Bob

Bob ... I know you Aussies are a bit irreverent, but how dare you suggest that a member of that morally superior class of businessfolks known as music publishers would squeeze the last dime out of music for their own personal gain???????????
