Calling all Sheffield (and nearby) 'catters who'd like to meet Jacqui & Kendall on their grand tour of England –
mark your diaries for Sunday evening 19 December!

Don't have a venue (i.e. pub) nailed down yet, but prolly will in the next day or two (just need to check with one or two people first) –
will post here as soon as place & time are confirmed, but wanted to let folks know as soon as possible.

Jacqui here. Hi to you Brucie.

We're looking forward to meeting some Sheffield Mudcatters next week.

We were hoping to get to a carol sing in the area tomorrow but have been warned of road work hold ups on the A1 that would cause real problems so don't think we can make it. But, by hook or by crook next Sunday......

Well worth it if you can make it. Maggie and I should be at Dungworth tomorrow, but you have to be there before 12noon.

Why didn't they come to Gainsborough last night? Only 25 minutes from Newark! We were all waiting with breath fully bated!

You don't need the A1 for Dungworth Kendall. The A616 would be fine - it will take you nearly the whole way, at a steady non-motorway pace. Grab the chance! (Or maybe you're aiming to take it in next week, en route to the Sheffield bash?)

If you fancy Gainsborough next Friday I'd be tempted to go myself, in which case I could offer you a lift. I've never been, but I've noticed one or two of them are Barmy Army types (cricket afficionados) as well as folkies, so it's time I did.

JaquiC, Kendall, Banjo Flower and me went to Lincoln Session this afternoon. NOBODY ELSE did. Daithi threw a sicky and called it off.

Sorry to hear that, Chris.

I am pleased to announce that the Sheffield session will be in the Kelham Island Tavern – great beer ("the best pub in Yorkshire," according to the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra)!) and a function room with wonderful acoustics (not to mention a rather relaxed attitude to closing time... ;^)

Will post again with a time – after consulting with Jacqui & Kendall.

Strolling Johnny - we were babysitting a four year old who was totally tired out by 7.30 so couldn't make it. Barring accidents we hope to be there next week -

Peter - we would love to take up the offer of a lift - I can have a couple of drinks as well then!

Look forward to seeing people at the Kelham Island Tavern next Sunday.

Should be able to make it, given how the rest of the weekend pans out. Are we talking mainly song do you think or will it be more mixed? Might get a couple of other musicians down if it is the latter case.

OK, Jacqui - let's go for it. I'm hurrying a bit just now, but we can sort out the details by PM in the next day or two (and I'll send you my phone number in case you wander beyond reach of the internet.

Sounds good Jaqui - just bear in mind we have a guest artist that night (Harvey Andrews - great singer/songwriter!) so performing opportunities might be more limited than usual (although I'm sure we can fit long-distance visitors in the list!).

12StG - I was confined to barracks wearing me pinnie and marigolds (Ooh Matron!) dusting and polishing, while Mrs. Johnny spent the weekend at work. Sorry - would have liked to be there.

Funny you should ask, Julie...

As it happens, this is a session that is usually mostly tunes (and mostly English), but Val & Dave have very graciously said we would be welcome, even though this may well mean being overrun with 'Catters, and more singing (& less "English" stuff) than usual – despite the fact they are not 'Catters themselves.

As for time, I believe the session usually starts at 9pm. I was thinking that if us 'Catters arrived at 8 pm, that would give us a bit of time to socialise & get to know each other a bit before the music starts.

So... now all the info is set, I'll repeat it here so it's all in one convenient post:

Sunday, 19 Dec, 8 pm (for 9) at the Kelham Island Tavern

Hope to see you there!

well - you should just be getting started as I hit the streets for 4 hours of caroling on this side of the pond. Suspect you will still be underway when I get to the cast party Sunday evening.

Looks like we will start at 7 intead of 8 – for the benefit of those who may be coming from further away...

IF the landlord is amenable, how many people would be willing to pay £3-£4 for a buffet?

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Sheffield Session with Jacqui & Kendall
From: YorkshireYankee

Have checked with the landlord... he's not really up for doing a buffet, but if people want to bring food with them & eat it in the pub, he has no problem with that. So... the next question is – how many people will not have had their tea by 7pm? (Or, how many folks would prefer to eat at the pub rather than beforehand?)

If there's more than a few, we could order pizzas. Or, those who are coming from in Sheffield could bring food to share (we call it a "potluck" in the US, but you don't really do that here, do you? Or do you just have a different word for it?) If it is just a few, then just bring your dinner with you. (Jacqui, we'll figure out something for you & Kendall.)

Also, please note: the pub doesn't actually open its doors 'til 7pm, so there's no point arriving more than a few minutes or so before then.

Have you got a KFC round your way? Kendall will eat pizza but I don't. Otherwise we'll find something on the way in.

Yes, there's one very near us. There's also an extremely good grill/kebab place, a very good Chinese place that does carry-out, and the usual quota of chip shops & curry places.

So far, looks like we have Julie F, asirovedout and weelittledrummer, probably Emma B and Malcolm Douglas, possibly MoorleyMan and maybe even the Ducks (if they can find a babysitter). Folkiedave, Muppitz and Strollin' Johnny send their apologies. There are a few more
I haven't heard back from but am hoping might make it there as well.

Looks like everyone (except possibly Jacqui & Kendall) will have had their tea before coming to the pub, so – in lieu of a buffet ;^) – I'll be bringing down some biscuits to share. See you all soon!

I regret that I am not up to it, came down with something yesterday and it is still haunting me. It feels like flu, but I had a flu shot, so I don't know what it is. Not enough Guinness?

I've just talked to Kendall (who can barely speak!); he says Jacqui is planning to come out here solo. If there are any further developments, I'll post here.

Meanwhile, sending warm, healing vibes to Kendall – hope you're feeling WAY better – PRONTO!

I met Kendall and JaquiC at Lincoln, last week. He has had Radiotherapy on his throat, that is why he can barely speak.
So don't be surprised when you meet him. He can still play a mean banjo or guitar though.

Well, Kendall wasn't able to make it to Sheffield last night but, in spite of that, I had a great evening, met some Mudcatters and sang some good duets with Yorkshire Yankee (I especially liked doing 'Gaudy Tree'), who put me up for the night and made me feel very much at home.

I got back this morning to find a much improved Cap'n, looking a lot less sorry for himself and possibly feeling up to the session tomorrow night.

Tried to post earlier, but I think Mudcat was down...

Really enjoyed meeting (& singing with) Jacqui, as well as the Sheffield 'Catter contingent, who made a pretty good showing (especially considering how close to Christmas it is): weelittledrummer, Julie F, asirovedout, MC Fat, Emma B, Malcolm Douglas and Huw G (who I hadn't met before, even though he's not far from Sheffield).

Very pleased to hear Kendall is feeling much better; look forward to meeting him one of these days. Jacqui, it was a pleasure to have you; you're welcome back any time – with or without your man in tow!
