Subject: 'Cara' for your Folk Festival.
From: Georgiansilver
Date: 11 Dec 04 - 12:22 PM

Now that "Cara" from North Lincolnshire have a website with the capability of producing music for you to hear. Please have a listen and be fascinated and delighted by their style of music and the easy listening of all of their three CDs. The other suggestion I would make is that you get them booked for your Festival as I would hazard an educated guess that they will be in big demand soon. My personal favourites on the website are "The Faerie Queen" and "The mayfly"..Go have a listen and assess for yourself the quality and entertainment value of this Folk Trio.
Best wishes..and once again..get 'em booked

For any festival organiser, take a tip. Book these lads, and then tell everyone you were the one that booked them, if reflected glory is your thing. Book them even if it isn't.

Cara are now getting played throughout Europe on Pulse Unsigned, its channel 905 on Sky.
Them without Sky, can listen online, www.pulseunsigned.com, [or it might be .co.uk?
theres a thread about it somwere.
Oaklet tells me they are playing a few Cara tracks, including tHe Fairy Queen, it gets its first play tomorow, I THINK its at 10pm?

Pulse Unsigned is a new radio station set up to give unsigned bands a chance to get heard on the radio, I heard about it on another music website that I use, and posted a thread about it here.
There are a couple of conditions, ie you MUST be unsigned, to qualify for getting played, and they don't want bands doing cover versions, it must be original or trad stuff.

Honest man, I am sure no one conected with the band would resent you having your opinion. All I would suggest is that you dont right them off without seeing them live or hearing their full body of work. It is always a risk putting "snapshots" of your work up for people to hear.
Most of the glowing comments on Mudcat about Cara come as a result of the release of the most recent CD, and most of the people making those comments are people who have already heard Cara either live or on CD before.
My own view is that the latest CD marks a watershed in terms of developement from the band.......there is nothing particularly different or unusual on it.....it is very much out of the mould of previous Cara CD`s. However to me, it just seems to "come together" much more consistantly this time and moves the band to a different level.
I suspect that is what their other fans have recognised and are responding to in their praise of the CD and the band. At the end of the day, there is always someone better out there......but I honestly think you have missed something "special" and urge you to give them another try. Heck.....it took me 30 years to acknolege that Bob Dylan had "something" so I dont condem you for not "getting it" from the limited exposure that you acknowlege is all you have had. :-)
Other "Guest", if it dont interest you then dont read it. It is quite obvious from the thread title what this thread is about.

Bassic: "It is always a risk putting "snapshots" of your work up for people to hear."

I'd reply that Cara must have thought the "snapshots" worth putting on their website or they surely wouldn't have put them there.

I'm afraid I have to agree with the other guests, the music really doesn't sound at all special.

Cara members and friends are doing their best to promote the band on this messageboard (and the fact that the likes of me have bothered going to their own website suggests they have at least succeeded in doing that) but the music speaks for itself.

The band has a long way to go yet. Just look at the venues they are playing.

I would suggest that negative GUEST comments on here are avoided as they tend to stir trouble unnecessarily. Opinions by those who are registered on Mudcat, whether negative or positive should be taken on board(IMHO) as they will generally be given with honesty and integrity and can be answered or questioned in the normal manner.
Cara are well above pub band status, as someone already said in reply to a GUEST.....incidentally...all the Guests who have made negative comments on this thread could be the same person..do you think????

Two points:

1. All Guests are not the same. I'm nothing to do with the other Guests that have posted here. The reason I don't reveal my name though is simple. I want the freedom to express opinions on other artistes including Cara without it being held against me. I think one of the band knows me so if I say that Cara are not as good as some people are claiming I don't want said band-person to pick a fight when we're next at the bar.

2. As this thread is headed 'Cara' for your Folk Festival, will one of the Cara Cheer-Leaders please state how many Festivals have so far confirmed bookings for Cara in 2005? I have mentioned the band to several Folk Club and Festival organisers over the past week and most hadn't even heard of Cara. I gave up asking as I had to keep explaining that Cara are nothing to do with Cara Dillon.

"I think one of the band knows me"!!!!!!!!! But do you know the band? very questionable if you are approaching this from a negative angle. If you are trying to belittle the future of the band, I hope you are doing it on a firm basis. Caras following is growing and I personally have not known them for long, I can however hear the quality in their music and have had the pleasure of seeing them live at Gainsborough Folk Festival where I am sure they will be welcomed warmly back next year.
As I said before...anyone in a Guest mode who is being negative on here is best ignored, as anyone could be "stirring it" from any part of the world and to say "I think one of the band knows me" is no reason for hiding!. Have the courage of your convictions "GUEST, yet another guest", whose writing style is similar to the previous one regarding bookings at festivals. Identify yourself and perhaps if that establishes you as a valid critic, a known musician or someone in a position of respect...we might listen!
Best wishes.

I have just returned from my local bar, sorry guest, I don't get your point, naturally your contacts do not know of CARA but in time
they will, these lads play really well.
There are allways people who knock talent, perhaps they have many
friends, which perhaps you don't, I know in the world of folk music
worldwide friendship is all important.
When I began to write songs, longer ago than I care to remember, I had also many critics, I think my songs lasted longer than them.
GOOD LUCK CARA, I like your music.

and while you're at it, "Georgiansilver", you could apply the criteria of your last sentence to yourself.

To Guest yet another Guest, how many festivals are YOU playing and which one's, from this I may be able todeduce who you are and come and pour Whelks down your trousers half way through your set !

I'm listening to Abbeyfeale at the moment, albeit the Punch the Horse version, and it is truly moving, a beautiful piece of music

Oh God there I go again inflating Oakleys ego ..... damn

GUEST, Yet another guest. You suggest I apply the criteria of my last sentence to myself..but why?.
I believe I have only shown myself as an encourager, to a good band, on this thread who has "hazarded a guess" that Cara will be booked for Festivals this year if people listen to their music on the site.
I have not suggested I am a critic, a performer or someone in a position to "Judge" them as you seem to have done.
I have no idea of Caras business dealings, nor would I want to have but because I know that they were thoroughly enjoyed at Gainsborough Folk Festival and in surrounding Folk Clubs (and other Festivals I am given to understand) I believe they are on the "UP" in the Folk world.
To that end, I will not be discouraged or wound up by your negativity as only time will prove whether or not I am correct in my humble assessment...not your discouraging words. So, meanwhile I will continue to encourage an excellent Folk trio, who are above average, and whose latest CD is one I play regularly
Best wishes.

Just to confuse all including myself, there seem to be two of us posting under the same name of 'Yet Another Guest'.

To Georgiansilver. Fair comment. I know you are only trying to "encourage an excellent Folk trio". Nothing wrong with a bit of promotion (or self-promotion) on Mudcat.

However, as this thread is headed 'Book Cara for your Folk Festival' I'm just intrigued to know from Cara and their promoters how many Festivals have actually booked Cara for 2005.

It would seem the answer is zero so far.

Isn't the whole point of Mudcat for people to share and tolerate each other's opinions?

'I'm just being honest' - fine, you are entitled not to like Cara as are others who do like them. Why does it then have to turn into an argument about whether you are right and they are wrong? Neither is right nor wrong, it's just opinion.

I will check Cara out and make my own mind up. But I'm not going to have a go at Georgiansilver for wasting my time if I don't like them. I'd rather thank him for giving me the opportunity to check a band out.

And so what if it's friends of the band promoting them? That's how any commidity gets sold, by promotion. People make their own decisions about whether they buy.

If you talked to a load of promoters about Cara you may well have done the friends of the band's job for them!

I can't class myself as a friend of the band as I don't know them that well on a personal level. I do however appreciate their music and will do all I can to encourage and promote them..simply because I think their music is worthy of it.
Best wishes.

Raggy, I'm so pleased you're listening to the proper version of Abbeyfeale. It still makes me cry.

Sorry your thread seems to have been bolloxed, chaps. Would quite like to have an evening of Cara myself sometime. David, you must let me know when you're playing.

Just in case there was any confusion.

GUEST Yet another guest. I have been trying to figure out any possible reason, you would have personally, for even wanting to know the extent of Caras bookings. It seems to me that if I were anything to do with the band, and believe me I am nothing to do with them, other than taking an encouraging interest, I would be telling you to mind your own business as their bookings etc are nothing to do with you.
If you have something against the band or a member of it, please save it for another forum, like approcahing the member who might know you direct in a Gentlemanly manner..If not, then can I suggest that a bit of encouragement for anyone in Folk music does not go amiss, neither does a little promotion from people who have nothing to gain.
As I previously said, I believe Cara are on the "UP" and as such will encourage/promote/advertise in an attempt to further other peoples knowledge of a great Folk trio. To interest them in the website costs me nothing and if they wish to use what they hear, that's fine...if they don't they don't...they have the choice.
Can I please also encourage you to think positively.
Best wishes.
