Subject: New Orleans Jan. 1-6, recommendations?
From: Ernest
Date: 19 Dec 04 - 04:06 PM

Hello everyone,
my girlfriend and I are going to be in New Orleans Jan. 1st till 6st. I know music is easy to find there, still I would like to hear which places and/or musicians you would recommend. Jazz, Cajun, Zydeco, Folk, Celtic, Oldtime, Bluegrass, who would be the local musicians to hear? Any place where I might find a nice banjo uke - or Satchmo`s original trumpet? ;0)
We would be grateful for some advice from locals...
Best wishes
Ernest

I'm not a local, but:

Every Monday night, jam session at Donna's, corner of Rampart and St. Ann on the edge of the quarter. Starts at around 9:30-10 p.m. and goes late.

Wednesdays and Thursdays are usually zydeco night at Rock 'N' Bowl (Mid-City Lanes), a bowling alley with live music. A fun place.

For Celtic, check out the Irish place on Toulouse and Decatur in the Quarter.

For jazz, the best *listening* room is Snug Harbor. People actually pay attention to the music.

For specifics, check out Offbeat's music listings on their web site at www.offbeat.com

And have a great time!

Snug Harbor is the place to be in NO for modern jazz....always top stuff there....a great place. If you're into Dixieland Jazz try Fritzel's for the best in town.

Spaw

I *am* a local, but don't really have much to add to Mary Katherine's excellent and fairly complete list of recommendations. The Thursday late-night jam at Vaughan's, a fairly obscure Ninth-Ward location, is the only "must-see" that I would add.

I might add that what she says about Donna's -- "Starts at around 9:30-10 p.m. and goes late" -- applies to almost *every* venue in town (except those where the action begins even later). Consider scheudleing yourself for afternoon naps whenever possible.

When you actually get here (or a few days prior), more specific recommendations will be possible, since we can consider the individual *acts* on the schedules, not just the venues. Shoot me a PM as a reminder and I'll try to help you formulate a plan and maybe even act as you musical tour guide for an evening or two.

Offbeat magazine, online or in print, is a good resource. I'd also recommend that you listen to local radio station WWOZ online as much as you can -- not only for the daily music schedule, announced at the top of every odd-numbered hour (US Central Time), but also to familiarize yourself with some of the local acts and artists you might be able to see live.

You need to visit O'Flaherty's. The Pub has some fine folks, Beth Patterson or Jeff Phillips. You can catch one of them pretty much anytime in the afternoon or evening.

In fact, Beth is not there as much - and she is well worth the visit, so you might check the calendar (above) to time your visit, and catch Beth and Jef the same day.

Also, well worthwhile is Danny (Himself) O Flaherty. He's a wonderful singer and really gets the whole room singing and laughing. Danny usually plays O'Flaherty's Ballad Room, and usually starts after 8PM.

It's a great place ... always worth a visit - but watch for the ghosts in the courtyard.

Go anywhere on Bourbon St at any time. Be sure to go to walk down Royal when the street is closed to traffic and is filled with Buskers. Be sure to go to Jackson Square for more of the same. Have a Beignette at Cafe Du Monde, plan on sleeping for a few days when you get home and enjoy New Orleans. I would move there tomorrow if I could.

Oh yeah, Go to Preservation Hall, just cuz. Try to get there early and don't plan on staying long. I felt like was in a drive through at a fast food restaurant due to the line up of people trying to get in, but it sure was memorable.

O'Flaherty's! THAT's the name of the place on Toulouse near Decatur; I'd forgotten. Yes, Danny O'Flaherty's shows are fun. I'll be there myself next week; sorry to miss your visit, Ernest, but I'll be leaving the day before you and your friend arrive or I'd show you around the quarter a bit. You're welcome to check out my first-timers guide to New Orleans on my web site at www.aliveandpicking.com. It hasn't been updated in awhile, but I plan to remedy that as soon as I get home.
