Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Na Hu O Ho (recorded by Fiona Kennedy) From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 31 Dec 04 - 03:30 PM Thanks. Checked that out, and apparently she's the daughter of famed Gaelic singer, Calum Kennedy. So there's a lot of tradition in her Gaelic background. Growing up, she would have had Gaelic spoken as well as sung to her. Wow! Apparently with that information, I have found that she has two full recordings, Coming Home and Maiden Heaven, and an EP, Follow Me. Apparently this song Na Hu O Ho is the first song on the EP and also on Maiden Heaven. Found a 20 second snippet of the song and I want the CD! Actually I want BOTH of them! Lovely voice. |

Subject: Lyr Add: CALUM BAN (from Maggie MacInnes) From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Nov 05 - 07:53 AM I'm not sure this is the song you want. It's called CALUM BAN, but it contains the phrase "na hu o ho" in the chorus. These lyrics are sung by Maggie MacInnes on her album "Eilean Mara," (1998), copied from http://www.geocities.com/celticlyricscorner/maggiemacinnes/eilean.htm#calum CALUM BAN CHORUS (AFTER EACH VERSE): 'S na hu o ho Chaluim bhain Fallain gum bu thu 'S na hu o ho Chaluim bhain O Chaluim, e Chaluim Slan fallain gun till thu O Chaluim bhain Mhic Ruaraidh 'S mor a luaidh thug mi-fhein dhuit O Chaluim bhain MhicCoinnich Air do shloinneadh cha bhi mi 'S i dol timcheall an Rubha 'S e do chriutha nach diobradh Tighinn timcheall na Cabaig Siuil ard ri cruinn dhireach 'S tu gu stiuireadh i tioram 'S do chuid ghillean gu h-iosal * * * Oh fair Calum Healthy may you be Oh fair Calum Oh Calum, oh Calum Whole, healthy, on your return Oh fair Calum, son of Roderick Great is the love that I gave you Oh fair Calum MacKenzie Your surname will not be mine She is coming 'round the headland With your crew that wouldn't falter Coming 'round the Cabag High sails on straight masts You would keep her dry And your own men below |
Subject: Lyr Add: NACH TRUAGH LEAT MI 'S TU'N EIRINN From: Jim Dixon Date: 03 Nov 05 - 08:14 AM Here's another possibility. This is sung by the band Mackenzie (which consists of 3 sisters: Fiona, Eilidh and Gillian Mackenzie) on their album "Fama Clamosa," 2002. Lyrics and translation copied from http://www.geocities.com/celticlyricscorner/mackenzie/fama.htm#nach NACH TRUAGH LEAT MI 'S TU'N EIRINN CHORUS (AFTER EACH VERSE): Na hù o hi, na hù o hò Hu o ù o eile Na hù o hi, na hù o hò Nach truagh leat mi 's tu 'n Èirinn 'S ann their iad rium on chaidh thu null Gum bi thu tric aig fèilltean 'S gum bi thu cuspaireachd le mùirn Ri Màili ruadh an Èirinn Ged sheòladh tu air feadh a' chuain 'S ged ruigeadh tu an Èiphit Cha thrèiginn thu air sgàth do chliù 'S cha toirinn gèill do bhreugan O nach robh agam sgiathan caol Gun siùbhlainn thar na slèibhtean Gu seinninn-sa mo dhuanag gaoil Ri fear tha tàmh an Èirinn * * * Na hu o hi, na hu o ho Hu o u o eile Na hu o hi, na hu o ho You don't care much for me while you're in Ireland They say to me since you went over That you are often at fairs And that you talk lovingly To red-haired Màili in Ireland Although you were to sail all over the ocean And although you would reach Egypt I would not forsake you because of your reputation And I would not heed lies Oh had I slender wings To travel over the mountains I would sing my love ditty To one who lives in Ireland |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Na Hu O Ho (recorded by Fiona Kennedy) From: Jon W. Date: 03 Nov 05 - 11:18 AM I have a recording of a similar song which appeared on a tape, "25 Scottish Favorites" under the name of Gentle Lady. The tape featured several songs performed by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, but this one was done by someone else, I think. It is a work song of some sort, and is sung unaccompanied except for some steady rhythmic scraping sounds. Any information, lyrics, etc. anyone can post on this would be greatly appreciated. |
