Couldn't find a thread on them here, but hoping some of you know of some.
Thanks!

A NATION ONCE AGAIN
SHALL MY SOUL PASS THROUGH OLD IRELAND
WEST'S AWAKE
ON THE ONE ROAD
LONELY WOODS OF UPTON
KEVIN BARRY
JAMES CONNOLLY
FOLLOW ME UP TO CARLOW
WRAP THE GREEN FLAG AROUND ME
BOOLAVOGUE
FOUR GREEN FIELDS
ONLY OUR RIVERS RUN FREE
BANNA STRAND
MEET ME AT THE PILLAR
GALTEE MOUNTAIN BOY
SOLDIERS SONG

From a google of Irish Patriotic Songs

Mind you, those are rebel songs. IF you simply mean songs expressin love of country, the list would be less. Look for old threads by putting "Irish" into the filter box and setting the time-frame to "all". You'll see quite a list.

Actually very few of the Irish patriotic songs are Traditional , in that the writers of most of them are known and documented .

One that is really traditional is The old Déise version of Sliabh na mBan ("is oth liom fhéinig bualadh an lae úd) immortalaised by Sean O'Riada's arrangement in MISE ÉIRE.

Then there are several Jacobite patrriotoic songs of the eighteenth century. The most popular is the reincarnated "Mo Ghile Mear" sung by Mary Black, Sting (of all people !!) and the Cúil Aodha choir.

My father was in Ireland in the 30s, and went to a movie. Before the show began, the entire audience rose and belted their new national anthem with considerable verve and enthusiasm. I understand they don't do that anymore. But if you're interested in Irish patriotic songs there's the place to start.

Then there are all the beautiful songs about actual places in Ireland - which in a way speaks quite as patriotically (thats got to be spelled wrongly) as militaristic songs

Paddy reilly of the dubliners did a lovely album with a song from every county. I've been rooting through me drawers looking for it

Who did that song about the train, Are You right Michael are you right. then there Bold Thaidy Quil about the hurling match between Cork and Tiperary.

And christy moore - his entire career is a love song to his native country.

My Dad had 19 versions of Rose of Mooncoin in his cd collection, be warned collecting this stuff is addictive! Just say yes.

It seems to me that there are three kinds of "Irish Patriotic Songs".
Those that sing of Ireland.
Rebel songs about Freedom
and
Rebel songs about how wonderful it is to be in the IRA and kill.

There are many beautiful songs in the first two categories. There are too many in the third.

probably not traditional (don't know origins), but "Nothing's Too Good for the Irish" was the first thing that came to mind.

Thomas Moore's stuff, including "The Minstrel Boy" and "Let Erin Remember The Days Of Old." "Shan Van Vocht." "O Donnell Abu."

And don't forget that Ireland was often disguised: as a woman, sometimes old, sometimes not; Tommy Makem's song "Four Green Fields" is one example of this as an old woman, "Dark Rosaleen" as a young one.

I always found 4 green fields an especially chilling song - much more so than something like Sean south or Boys of the Old Brigade, Come out you black and tansetc. Its that promise in the last verse that the sons will have sons and the fight and the bloodletting will go on to return the four green fields (apparently whether the Paisleyite inhabitants want to be returned or not!). Anyway don't lets get into that.

Its a new year . peace and goodwill to all, and lets hope this is the year they sort it out and bring us all peace everlasting.
