Subject: Lyrics? - Rachami/d a Bhean Bheag
From: cleod

Just wanted to know if anyone's got the lyrics and song title of the bit Kevin Conneff sings in the last track of "An Irish Evening" (Rachami/d a Bhean Bheag is the title of the instrumental that leads to the solos, I think.) I've got the first two stanzas and they go like this:

As I walked out through Belfast City
In the dark hours late at night
Well, who should I see but a fair young maiden
Washing her toes (?) in the clear moonlight
(lilting)

First she washed them and then she squeezed them
And then she hung them out to dry
And then she folded up her arms,
Saying, "What a nice young girl am I!"

Sla/n! cleod

I haven't heard Kevin sing it but I suspect it was her clothes she was wringing! Its a version of "Spanish Lady", of which there are a few versions in the DT. Sounds like one Frank Harte does as "Chester City", with Kevin localising it elsewhere as the humour/occasion strikes.

Regards

The name of the intro piece is "Raithíneach, a bhean Bheag" which is quite a nice little ditty in its own right.

Cleod

The words look like a parody of "The Spanish Lady".

Cheers!
Ian
