I'm making CDs to order of Rock Creek's 1984 cassette "Yonder Come Day" available to members of the mudcat for $9.00 including s&h in the U.S. and $11.00 outside the States. If you'd like a copy, please send me a personal message.
--------------------------------------
Rock Creek (Tom McHenry, Bill Destler and Wally Macnow) was primarily an a capella trio that sang American roots music at festivals, clubs and halls between 1977 and 1986. This recording was made in 1984 at Gypsy Studios in Falls Church, Virginia. It was issued on cassette in a limited edition and quickly sold out. With the exception of a few songs contributed to Folk Legacy's "A Golden Ring of Gospel Music", it is Rock Creek's only released work.

The CDs are being cut as ordered and will be shipped in jewel cases. There is nothing fancy about the labeling. The music includes shanties; gospel, roustabout, and nonsense songs and a couple of rounds. They are as much to be sung as to be listened to.

1. Rolling Down To Old Maui;      9. Rolling and Flowing
2. Poor Little Jesus             10. New Year's Round
3. 10,000 Miles Away             11. I Don't Intend To Die In
4. Crazy Gibberish                         Egypt Land
5. Judgment                      12. Take Me Out To The Ball Game
6. Chesapeake Gold               13. Yonder Come Day
7. John Cherokee                14. All I Do, The Church
8. This Song Of Love                  Keep A-Grumbling

There was also a Bluegrass band called "Rock Creek" which was based in the Washington D.C. area during the 1980s. Moondi Klein who was the lead vocalist with Chesapeake and for a short while before that with the Seldom Scene was the leader of that band. SOL ZELLER

Great! Wally, I'll be PM-ing you as soon as I get home, as my ancient dubbed copy seems to have vanished (my ex got custody of the original...)

Folks, this is a terrific album -- lots of good sing-alongs, and lots of fun, too!

Nancy

Yeah, this is great news! Wonderful stuff on this, one of my favorite recordings. I still have my well-loved cassette, but nothing to play it on, so the availability of all these songs on CD is happy news indeed. Sign me up, Wally! THIS Rock Creek, the ORIGINAL Rock Creek, was a terrific group, full of energy, fun, and great arrangements of unusual songs. Highly recommended! (And this is NOT a paid endorsement *BG* )

I played a few gigs with Moondi Klein when living in the DC area circa 1992 - great singer and great guy. Anybody know what he is up to these days?

Hi Dave,
I asked that same question on my very first post when I joined Mudcat. I started the thread "Where Is Moondi Klein ?" and I was the only poster. Apparently nobody else knows. I discovered him about 17 years ago when his Rock Creek band was performing at the Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland. At the time, my wife and myself were booking performers for the Borderline Coffe House up in Rockland County, NY where we live. We booked the band and they were an instant hit. The man who did their sound, Barnaby Bristow was the best sound man I have ever experienced in the 35 years that I have been affiliated with Folk Music. If you ever find out where either Moondi of Barnaby are please let me know so I can get in touch with them. SOL ZELLER

Hey guys, that's not the topic of this thread! Why don't you resurrect the "Where is Moondi Klein" thread for this discussion. Rock Creek's "Yonder Come Day" deserves its own space. Thanks!
Kathy

Many thanks to Wally for taking the time to get "Yonder Come Day" out. We had a great time recording it @ Mike Rivers' studio, and I'm glad that it will have a new lease on life.

When it was new, this was my favorite tape for about 2 years, I think I played it til it turned gray. There's no way you can tell people about music, though. Somehow they have to hear a bit of it, especially with something as neat as Rock Creek's harmonies. Wally is there any way you can put up a couple minutes of song somewhere on an mp3?

Let me think about it and get back to you. I don't have a website of my own any more. If I can figure out how to do it, I will.

Anyone have any suggestions? Is there any place to put it on the mudcat?

Mine arrived today. I love all of it, and I'm especially in awe at the number and handling of the gospel & spirituals. What fun it all sounds like you were having!

If we all did this kind of preservation work, the world would be the richer for it. I wonder what other gems are hiding away in people's houses?????

I'm more committed than ever to getting our work recorded, even if we aren't any good (Rock Creek IS) and even if we have bad recording quality (Yonder Come Day sounds GREAT). I have songs to pass along, that as far as I know, no one else sings anymore. Sometimes, I forget that it's really all about that. I don't forget it when I sing-- but I do, when it comes to handing it over afterwarsds as a recording.

If I ever get my act together to actually put this up for sale as more than a one-off, I'd love to use your comments in a review section. Thanks so much for your kind comments. I'm glad you like it.

Wally, might it be something Dick Greenhaus could distribute for you through Camsco? And yes, use my comments if they are any use.

What I didn't say was this-- it made me sing along, immediately, and through the whole CD. I'm our band's songfinder-- we lead the music for a weekly gospel worship service-- all types of gospel, and a lot of spirituals. When a song and/or its interpretation makes me start singing, it's a sure hit. This CD is all hits. You guys must have been the bomb!

Susan,

The purpose of releasing it is to get the songs sung again. The more people singing them, the happier we three are.

I don't manage to scan the Mudcat much these days, Wally, but Caroline and I would certainly love to add our names to your order list. I think the suggestion that you offer the reproduction task to Camsco is a fine idea! Dick can bop out a bunch of them with his Bravo unit much more readily than you can on a one-off set-up.
Some day, I'll get Max to remind me (again) of what my ID and password were.

As I said before, this is one of my favorite collections. Well sung, with an obvious love of the music shining through clear and bright. Well arranged, with some really wonderful harmonies. And a great selection of unusual songs/versions. Nothing not to like! Order yours today.

WoW WALLY ~!!

Wadda GREAT recording !
I love that peculiar spot where doo-wop and folk intersect,
and you guys nailed that one. My buddy Jim Nelson In Oakland CA
does that to chanteys & I can't get enough of his swirled-in-mouth
vowel vocalizations. Thanks so much for re-issueing this gem.

Well thank you very much. I'm glad you're enjoying it. Bill wrote Chesapeake Gold after reading about this couple that had been going out on an excursion boat in the bay regularly for 35 years. If I remember correctly the boat was being taken out of service and I think there was a movement to keep it running. Chesapeake gold is Maryland Blue Crabs.

Hi! Just stumbled upon this cafe and thread.

Is the CD of "Yonder Come Day" still available? I was a Rock Creek groupie in the 80s, and would treasure a copy.

PS, I'm also a colleague of Bill's at the University of Maryland.
