I picked up this song from Mareck Shakowsky (that's how it sounds, I sure it's not how it's spelled) in the summer of 92 during the tall ships (sail-op) visit to Boston. Mareck was acting as laison between the cadets & the captain (basically the 1st mate) aboard the wishbone schooner the Zawisza Czarny (translated; the Black Knight). I got invited (because I was singing on board with a fiddler who had just signed on) to go for an afternoon sail & as soon as we cleared the pier Mareck picked up a concertina & started playing (maybe as a call to work?) while playing he started shouting out orders & the crew/cadets started in with setting the sails with Mareck then starting to sing shanties, Londion Julie being the 1st & following it with Roller Bowler accompanied by 2 long time sea musicians, John Townley & Simion Spaulding & a few of the musicians in the crew with the others handling the sails & singing the responses. It was heaven. I was asked later that eve. to join their dockside concert. Those in the crew that couldn't play or sing, danced. I watched 2 of the crew perform/dance the Sailor's Hornpipe, best I'd ever seen. After the concert some of the crew from other ships all partied together & we all ended up singing aboard the schooner Shenandoah. I really had no idea of the company I was singing with. I was asked at the end of the weekend if I'd like to join as crew on the sail to England, I was told they were the slowest ship in the fleet but the one that had the most fun, I couldn't do it. A couple of yrs later I met Mareck again at Mystic & along with Shanty Jack we started trading drinks & shanties with Jack teaching me the harmonies. It turns out that the Polish are very proud of their strong maritime culture/history keeping it very much alive & that Mareck was concidered to be the father of the Polish sea music revival.

Yes, their fame came in spurts, though many people found their pop-folk 60's approach to the music pretty flaccid. I understand some of the bandmembers formed a new group, "Floating Seamen."

The "Poles Apart" recording is one of the best shanty albums I've ever heard and well worth owning, in my opinion.

There's also a another recording about to be released by two fine shanty singers from California titled "Boldly from the Westward" - I can't remember their names at the moment but I'm sure there'll be a Mudcat post about it soon. Rumor is that the album is phenomenal.

I wonder which one, too. Chantey singing is followed bigtime in Poland. They have some great chantey festivals, I hear, where the singers are regarded as rock stars! Tom Lewis recorded a CD with a group of polish chantey singers, called "Poles Apart." (sorry for the thread creep).

London Julie  (Bonnie, with Alison & Joy) Just as sailors made long circuitous journeys, so did their chanteys. The text we use is Barry Finn’s (U.S.), who heard the song from a Polish chantey singer, who in turn got it from Roy Harris (U.K.). Roy found the tune and a fragmentary text on a recording in the Robert W. Gordon collection at the Library of Congress. Just as Roy and Barry have provided verses today, so did the sailors and collectors in their day.

Roy Harris is known as "Burl" on Mudcat. Barry Finn is known as "Barry Finn."

Then, I wasn't "hearing voices" on "A soldier took her far from me"? Both endings are legit, I take it? If so, that's in keeping with the chanteymen of old, who rarely sang chanteys the same way twice.

Hi Mary don't you go getting picky on me & don't trust those Conn. folk to speak or to sing proper. It's gotta be sung with the correct pronunciation, a Bostonian accent would be the right way, like this "Jewel-e-anna". There are no "h's" in the english language, for that matta there R no "R's" eitha. You been in Maine for such a shot time listening to those downeasta's and alReady you'Re cents of the spoken woRd. Bonnie asked me where the pump shanty 'Priests & Nuns' came from. I told her Jerry Bryant but that it was in Harlow's collection. She kept asking & I kept saying Harlow. She could't figure out if I was saying Hi-Lo or Hello, same thing happened when she asked about 'Roller Bowler'. I guess everyone else is trashing the language, go figure.

I believe the way Joe has it at the top here is from the Carpenter collection & according to Bonnie Millner it's also in the Robert W Gordon collection, I've never seen it in print myself. Bonnie of the Johnson Girls did a good bit of research for the notes on their CD. Joe's provided a link to an older thread which you might find interesting. The It was such a hell of a shanty I felt it needed more than just floating (filler) verses so those verses that chanteyranger has above I wrote.

"Julianna" is so widely known among both the SF and DC clubs, that I thought it must be a standard. I couldn't find it in any of the sea song books I checked - I think I have all the standard books. The other thread traces it to Shanty Jack and Stormalong John of the UK. Know of any other sources?

Hi, Stephen - that's a hard one to find because there can be so many variations of spelling. this thread (click) talks about the song, but doesn't include lyrics. I thought this would be a common song and would be very easy to find, but not so. I looked in thirteen different sea song books for background information, and didn't find this song. I think the Johnson Girls recorded it, but I couldn't find their CD just now. Can anybody give background and source information? A tune would be nice, too. Send MIDIs to me for posting.

I think I first heard it from Barry Finn. Barry's version is memorable.
