RainyCamp 2005---A folksinging weekend, sponsored by the Seattle Song Circle, an associated group of the Seattle Folklore Society

Dates: February 4-6, 2005

Location: Carnation, Washington (about 45 minutes east of Seattle)

Cost:   $72 ($100 Canadian) for adults and teens 12 and over
       $56 ($75 Canadian) for children 3-11
       free for children under 3

Format: Friday---potluck dinner & giant song circle
         Saturday---workshops & participants' concert, followed by impromptu
                      song circles & jams
         Sunday---workshops

Location: Maps will be sent with your receipt, starting early December. Accommodations are dormitory buildings with rooms containing 6-8 bunk beds. Each building has toilet facilities, but showers may be in separate buildings. Bedding is not provided. RV's can bring you to the site, but may not be used as dormitories (camp rules).

Workshops: There are a number of scheduled workshops on Saturday and Sunday, and always space left for do-it-yourself ones. As RainyCamp is an offshoot of Seattle Song Circle, most are in Song circle format (participants take turns to lead, request, or pass), but some may be presentation or teaching. As both subjects and leaders are drawn from the attendees, we need suggestions and volunteers---if you're interested, please let us know by Dec 10 if possible (when indicating time wanted, don't be shy---if a workshop runs out of steam earlier, just break up & go to another one). Although the primary focus of the weekend is singing, instrumental jams are common and space is available for them.

Meals: Friday night is a potluck. The rest of the meals will be catered, and will include both meat and vegetarian dishes. In the interest of keeping prices as low as possible, they will be basically good camp food, though as nutritious as we can afford, but feel free to bring anything additional you want (or need, if you're on a special diet).

Children: Kids are always welcome, but must be supervised, and their parents are responsible for seeing that this is done. We have little scheduled so far in the way of specific kids' activities---please indicate if you'd be interested in helping develop some (eg nature walks, games, etc).

Payment: We can no longer accept charge cards, but do take checks, money orders or cash. There will be no discounted rate for stays of less than the full weekend. If the weather makes getting to the camp impossible (as opposed to just difficult), we will refund as much of your money as we can after deducting non-recoverable expenses. Otherwise, refunds will be as follows:
--up to 2 weeks before the event, 100%
--to 3 days before the event, partial (again, depending on expenses)
--less than 3 days before the event, no refund.
We do offer several work scholarships for Friday setup and Sunday final clean-up---check with us as soon as possible if you are interested---they're a great way to a free weekend. We may also have a few special-case scholarships available.

I'll be there. I will be doing a workshop on Songs of the Pacific Northwest. I'll set up equipment in the Chapel on Sat. afternoon to record all participants. I'm interested in traditional and also original and contemporary songs. I'd like to preserve these songs as sung by people of the region, and if this is successful to produce a CD of PNW songs for the Seattle Song Circle. So Mary, and others, please stop by, I know you have some great songs. I'll stay around a little later in the afternoon for those who have other workshops to attend.

Has it been a year already? I posted a couple of photos from last year's Rainy Camp on my photo page here at Mudcat. There are many photos of the events of the past at the Rainy Camp web site.

It was a fluke that I was up in Washington at all last year, and I won't be around this year, but it is an event worth going out of your way for. Just try to drive there during daylight; it's easier.

Barbara, I have some interest in going to rainycamp as I've never seen that part of the country. Tickets to Seattle are fairly inexpensive. Would it be difficult to rent a car and drive to the camp? Could I get a place (ticket) when I got there? Can you tell me more? Abby

Do come Harpgirl. I think you can still get in. I think Jean's number is in an above message..if not I'll message you later with it. If you did not have to travel a huge time by plane, I would consider getting not getting a car but going by bus (city bus, a dollar or two) into Seattle, and then into Carnation if you arrived mid-day. Someone could pick you up I bet. I am coming from far away so I can't offer as I won't have a car but someone will. I get lost whenever I try to get out that way but the buses are easy...I can't sayu for sure one goes to Carnation but I would think they would. Jean can give you local advice. With all the security arrangements it would be very difficult for someone to pick you up at the airport itself I would think.. mg

Do come. People are friendly. I am personally but only after about 11 a.m. It is semi-rural..was old dairy farms around and now almost urban sprawlish. Hard to find..for me, yes. For others not geographically impaired, probably not..but I get tangled up in Bellevue traffic each time.

Perhaps you could meet someone say in the U. District and carpool with them. I would recommend getting to Seattle late morning if you could and traveling light. Buses are very good in Seattle and fine from the airport to downtown, and then a straight shot to almost anywhere, including Carnation itself. It is the Camp Don Bosco camp. Perhaps someone can show you a map to it. Especially if you drive you want to get there early (daylight) and avoid the bad traffic that occurs.

Oh, you can go on Mapquest and it might show it.

You'd be on major highways much of the way, but the last stretch of road is through winding country highways and little towns, with a couple of dog-leg intersections. If you drive, pay close attention to mileage markers. You might want to get a cell phone number of someone you know will be there in case you end up in Carnation itself and have to backtrack. But it isn't rocket science.

Hi, harpgirl. Mark and I are going and would be glad to give you a ride from Tacoma (where the Seattle Airport is) if you'd like. I pretty good at finding it, and the directions Jean sends out are good too, if you want to rent a car and drive. Rainy Camp tends to be a lot of singers and a somewhat smaller number of instrumentalists. If you are going to go, try to get in Thursday late or early Friday, so you have plenty of time to get a car or get picked up or whatever before about 3 - 3:30 p.m. Friday, because then the weekend rush travel time really kicks in.
Or if you want more time to think, the Portland Folklore Society has a campout in March (Singtime Frolics)SE of Portland.

sorry you can't make it Lane...and harpgirl the universe is throwing you all sorts of hints that you should come. You would get to see Carnation, the home of Contented Cows, and perhaps Snoqualmie Falls. there are phenomenally handsome men there if that is a consideration at all, although most, like the abovementioned Mark, are married. And it is worth flying across the country to have the Dutch Baby pancakes for breakfast.. And it is possible I might bring my fiddle. Fortunately for all I do not have a fiddle bow....mg

I may also be able to help with transportation from and to the airport should you decide to attend. Just give me plenty of warning about when you might arrive. I know the way there as I live just up the road and around the bend from the camp and have attended a couple of times, (not as a full-fledged camper but as a visitor).

I should tell you that this is primarily singing...and they will encourage those who wish to play instruments to find a building other than the main gathering lodge. The dining room is always good and there are usually other areas for small jams etc.

I am hoping against hope the great and wonderful accordian player shows up. mg

Just like Seattle...I am going to see the West though and maybe the next event will be the one! Thank you all for being so welcoming!
