January 27, 2005 would have been Kate Wolf's 63d Birthday. On Sunday 1/23 I will be presenting a Rememberance of her music and her life on WFDU on TRADITIONS. Lots of her music will be featured---along with that of some others that relate to her. Also a brief chat with her children.

I hope you can join us between 3-6 PM Eastern Time 89.1 FM in the NY NJ CT areas or on the web:

I'm a Kate Wolf fan, and I'm sure your show will be good. Unfortunately, I don't live in a place where I could tune in to your radio station directly and I don't have broadband on my computer.

Back in 1989, Dick Cerri, of WETA in Washington DC, did a Kate Wolf memorial on his radio show, and it was fantastic. It included recordings of Kate live in concert and some really good live interviews of her. (I cry when I hear them.) It also had some cuts from a tape of a Kate Wolf Memorial Concert, including the song that ended the concert, Give Yourself to Love, sung by everyone present. I do mean everyone. As Cerri explained, even the stage hands stopped their work to sing with the performers and the audience. The tape is very moving.

Unfortunately, I did not attend the Memorial concert. Fortunately, however, I heard Cerri's memorial on the radio and I taped it. I would be happy to make copies for anyone who is interested. If anyone tapes the upcoming memorial, I'd like a copy.

I am not sure if you really need broadband to listen to streaming on the web. My expertise in that technical area is limited. My experience as a Luddite is enormous, however.

I think you will be moved by the Tribute---and by its ending. I will, given your excellent suggestion, now add that final track from the Memorial Concert (which may or may not be the same one) which is now on a CD.

I guess that answers my question in response to Pauline L about dial-up. Hope she can join us.

In fact I had not done it previously---merely played a few pieces. This time, however, I do believe you will be spending an afternoon (or part of one) with Kate as she probably spent them with friends and in intimate settings.

Bill H,

Would you please give some details or an URL for the Memorial Concert CD you mentioned? I'd like to see whether it's the same one I have.

I will not be able to listen to the whole program live on the Internet because I have to teach from 4 to 6. Can anyone tell me whether there is a way to download and save it so that I can listen later?

I checked and the CD I spoke of is of a different memorial concert and ends with Amazing Grace.

I doubt yu can download---you could, however, tape it. Sound quality will not be that great I should think, but you would have the substance.

Sorry to say we have not the capability to archive at this point.

I can record on my computer and will attempt to get the program - no guarantees, as I'm not sure I can record 3 hours continuously - but I'll give it a try and, if successful, try to find a way to share it

Much as I would like you all to stay with the program for the full 3 hrs I can tell you the the Kate Wolf portion will run from 4 PM to 5:20 Eastern Time.   I mention this for the benefit of those who want to record that segment.

She had a nice voice, simple chords, friends and fans. Too bad she died so young and didn't have the time to develop as a national voice. I understand she did some charitiable shows, supported the unfamous but she was only a regional voice. I like her songs but beyond that unless you want to raise awareness for what she believed in I think you are pandering.

Thats the most moronic post I've read in quite a while. Please "pander" on anytime you like Bill.
I am pleased that her "regional voice" found it's way to my ears, especially since they are located some 2000 miles from where Kate's lips were.

Guest,

I have to admit that Kate Wolf is among my least favorite folk musicians. I found about half her songs to be a lot of self introspective cosmic navel gazery. The other half I often found exceptional if not at least listenable. "Trumpet Vine", "Across the Great Divide," and "Riding Out The Storm" are among the later. "The Lilac and The Apple Tree" and some awful song about rising like a dolphin are among the former.

But I think it is greatly unfair and downright wrong to marginalize her as a simple regional voice(What does that mean anyway?) who never found her national voice. That sounds like a commercial indictment to me that states record sales are the only indicator of how influential and worthy an artist might be.

Much as I don't care for half of her stuff she clearly affected an awful lot of people with her singing. I'd go so far as to say she may have been the tap root that became what I call Cosmic Cowboy music and the inspiration to people like Dave Carter and Tracey Grammer and even Nancy Griffith.

Don M---So well put. Seems to me that most, if not all things, come down to "taste" and/or personal likes and dislikes. I, for one, found her music and her voice moving and inspirational. Assuredly some did not as evinced by the ever popular "Guest".

Given that I shall "pander" only to those who feel as I do---so get those hankies out. I am sure there are those who are touched by other artists--hopefully those people will find a "panderer" of their own.

Now, I can only hope the snow in this region is not going to preclude this program---if it does I will keep you all posted as to when I shall reschedule.

Meanwhile, remember---Give Yourself to Love---and sit near a Trumpet Vine and think how the hills in Calif. turn brown in the summertime. Thought I'd warn ya.

Sorry, but I have to step into this discussion. My co-host, Bill has done an outstanding job in preparing for this show. (Let's hope the weather cooperates so he can to the station.)

I respect "guests" who wish to remain anonymous, but to use that as a shield to lob grenades is cowardly. Everyone is entitled to opinions of music, I certainly have mine and they often differ from Bill. We always learn from each other - Bill and I learn from each other and our audience and vice versa. That is what makes creating music and hosting radio shows interesting. This "guest" certainly is entitled to an opinion, and I respect that not everyone sees depth in the music of Kate Wolf.

However, to accuse any of us of "pandering" is very short sighted. Yes, there is enough cause to do a show like this simply to keep the name alive and to introduce her music to those who may not have had an opportunity. That alone is reason enough.   There are numerous artists deserving of such recognition, or at the very least a "re-introduction" after so many years have passed.   However, there are more reasons than just that.

Everyone is a "regional" voice to some extent. If an artist makes an effort to become "national" by appealing to the largest common denominator, then THAT is pandering.    A look at Kate Wolf's music reveals a slice of time that has since passed. She has influenced many artists and her style can be heard in voices that are singing today.

I think anyone who tunes into Bill's special will enjoy it. Give it a try! You may not care for Kate Wolf, but you might be surprised!

Thanks----you put it very well, Ron.

I also appreciate what your definition of "pandering" is.

As to regional things---on a lighter note---if the "regional" weather here gets much worse,it looks like Kate Wolf will have to stay regional until March.   Right now-- 5 PM ET/Sat-- I do believe the show will proceed. I am always optimistic.

Bill,

Pander away - Kate's music has moved me many a time and I love to sing it, as well.

I'm prepared to try to record it tomorrow - I trust you will post here if its not going to happen? Also, will there be commercial breaks? Wondering as it may affect how I record it...

Thanks for doing this - ignore the guest.

No, Lane, no commercial breaks. It is a non commercial station---at 5 PM there will be a quick station ID. That is it.

Should the storm--which is pretty heavy---preclude this I will surely announce the March date for this.

I am hoping to make it though.

And--as Kate has sung---Give Yourself To Love---seems like a good idea to me.

I began listening to Kate Wolf only recently (thanks to the Net).
Australia is not quite the "region" where Kate was from, but I like many of her songs, her voice and guitar playing. Good on you for keeping the memory alive and letting people like me know what we missed years ago.

I had the same problem. When I tried opening the streaming music in Windows Media Player my security alert came on and said that the site was trying to install a rouge program on my hard drive which Windows security blocked. I ended up listening on the radio.

That is truly strange since on of my callers this afternoon was listening on her computer in Southern New Jersey.   She called to say that she had just moved to that area and no longer could get our air signal and was delighted that she was able to still get us on the computer.
