Subject: 'Where the River Shannon Flows' a parody
From: John M.
Date: 20 Jan 05 - 01:40 PM

Hello everyone,

If you are easily offended, please STOP READING.   This thread is for mature audiences only.  Please don't post "dreadful song" or "worst song written" as you are not helping.

Below is a transcription of traditional bawdy parody titled:  "Where the River Shannon Flows" (bawdy recording)   (Here is the original song.)

Do you sing this parody?  If so when/where did you learn it?

If you know this song -- or any bawdy songs -- would you please consider doing a telephone interview with me for folkloristic purposes?   If you would like more information, you can send me an email me at john@mehlberg.com

Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,

John Mehlberg

  WHERE THE RIVER SHANNON FLOWS

My favorite spot dear Effy
Is underneath your belly
Where the hair is short and curly
Where my fingers long to go

Sure, it's the home of my shillaly
I used to put it in there daily
It's the spot on you dear Effy
Underneath your great big belly
Where the River Shannon flows.

[Note: This is transcribed from the underground LP done by Bob & Sylvia Love titled Ma and Pa Snort Blaster: Laffs for Experiment Adults (undated (ca 1958), no location (Las Vegas)).   Another version of this song is found on pg 40 of the rare book A Collection of Sea Songs and Ditties from the Stores of Dave E. Jones (ca. 1928, np, na, nl (New York(?))]

Ah, but bad taste is timeless.

"Elly" would make a better rhyme than "Effy".
Nitpicking a bawdy song - what next?

This song has nothing to recommend it. Not bawdy, just dull. Like the original.
