Subject: Lyr Req: Silken snood/pulling of the bracken
From: Barb'ry
Date: 24 Jan 05 - 12:10 PM

Does anyone know the words to this song - although I probably don't have the right title. Bev Young sang and recorded this in New Zealand and I have been looking for the words for ages. The chorus is: 'Twine it well my bonny doe, twine it well a-plaiten, for the lassie's lost her silken snood, in a-pulling of the bracken'
I'd really appreciate your help - it's a lovely song.
Many thanks
Barb'ry

The Silken Snood

O I hae lost my silken snood
That tied my hair sae yellow
I gied it tae the lad I lo'ed
He was a gallant fellow

And twine it weel my bonnie doo
And twine it weel the plaiden
The lassie lost her silken snood
A-pu'in' o' the bracken

He praised my een sae bonnie blue
Sae lily-white my skin-o
And syne he pried my bonnie mou'
And swore it wis nae sin-o

And twine it weel …

But he has left the lass he lo'ed
His ain true love forsaken
Which gars me fair tae greet the snood
I lost amang the bracken

And twine it weel …

I know it from the singing of Aileen Carr and Maureen Jelks

I'm sure that Aileen and Maureen will have credited their source. As it is I can only guess, but I'd say they got it from The Scots Musical Museum (vol I, 1787, no 31, page32) where it is called Twine weel the Plaiden (the usual title); the words are identical.

Number 8522 in the Roud Folk Song Index. I can post the SMM tune, but not today.

citation corrected per Malcolm's post below jan 26 '05 - joeclone

I've just checked and Maureen Jelks does indeed credit her source on her CD "Eence upon a time"; and it is as Malcolm says, almost word for word.

My SMM citation was inaccurate: it's number 31, page 32.

And here is the tune.
