Subject: Burns and Haydn From: Davetnova Date: 25 Jan 05 - 03:30 AM In a barely heard snippet on the radio the morning was a piece about 400 Scots folk songs which Haydn was commisioned to write arrangements for by an Edinburgh publisher. There is an ongoing project to record them all with a projected release date of 2009. The little bits they played sounded a little bit "operatic", if thats the word, to me but I suppose it's a valid Scots style. Anybody Know anything more about this? |
Subject: RE: Burns and Haydn From: GUEST,Fogie Date: 25 Jan 05 - 04:28 AM Thom(p)son's the publisher commissioned them from Haydn, at a time when Haydn was running low on invention-presumably he was getting old. What I heard sounded very interesting, in that he was making trios or similar out of a wide range of Scottish airs and dance tunes which I have only heard of and played in their 'White Heather', or dance band arrangements, and browsed Kerr's merry melodies wondering what gems I was missing. Like that music performed by the Palladian Ensemble ,and presumably others I have not heard of, there is a wealth of Classically arranged and composed Scottish/Italian/ French art music to be discovered in Scottish archives, not to mention Beethoven and Haydn, and I do particularly like the different Scottish forms of dance music- with strathspeys, marches, and celtic airs to add to the ususal band repertoirs. I would very much like to hear how a classical arranger expounds a basic tune with counter melodies and bass in simple ensemble form. I'ts a long time to wait for maybe 20 CDs, but tantalizing for me |
Subject: RE: Burns and Haydn From: masato sakurai Date: 25 Jan 05 - 04:40 AM Three volumes of Haydn's Volksliedbearbeitungen (Schottische Lieder) have been published by G. Henle Verlag (München), which contain 268 songs in all with annotations. Scottish songs (Nr. 151-268) arranged for George Thomson (publisher) are collected in Joseph Haydn Werke, Reihe XXXII--Band 3 (2001). Some information on the background is given by Roger Fiske in his Scotland in Music: A European Enthusiasm (Cambridge UP, 1983, pp. 55-). |
