Subject: RE: Hey Joe From: Brack& Date: 29 Nov 98 - 08:19 PM Tim Rose? |
Subject: RE: Hey Joe From: Ritchie Date: 30 Nov 98 - 08:08 AM I think it's traditional but it was about '66 when Hendrix had a 'hit' with it and my colleague informs me that it was on Love's 1st album but we don't know when that was released. Ritchie |
Subject: RE: Hey Joe From: Brack& Date: 30 Nov 98 - 10:44 AM The Byrds also did it. |
Subject: RE: Hey Joe From: Earl Date: 30 Nov 98 - 10:57 AM It's not traditional but it was recorded quite a bit in the 60's. A group called the Leaves had a hit single with a fast version. I think Brack& is right that the author is Tim Rose. |
Subject: RE: Hey Joe From: Steve Latimer Date: 30 Nov 98 - 02:30 PM In the liner notes of "Jimi Hendrix, The Ultimate Experience" Jimi refers to "Hey Joe" as an old cowboy song, about a 100 years old. He was not quite sure of it's origin, but he admitted to putting his own twist on it. Roy Buchanan is the only other artist I've heard cover it, he kept it fairly close to Jimi's version. |
Subject: RE: Hey Joe From: Big Mick Date: 30 Nov 98 - 08:05 PM Take it from some of us oldtimers who were there. If you check the album cuts from the mid to late 60's, you will find "Hey Joe" covered by everyone from The Soulbenders to The Byrds. I would have to do some serious checking, but I will bet there were10 to 12 covers of the song. Hendrix's version of course is unequalled. I guess I always assumed it was an old blues song. But that was always an assumption on my part. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Hey Joe From: Earl Date: 01 Dec 98 - 12:41 AM BMI has it as written by Billy Roberts. They list quite a few "Hey Joe"s but his is also listed as "Hey Joe You Shot Your Woman Down" and "Hey Joe Where You Gonna Go" I realize this is not conclusive but, as Mick says, it was covered by a lot of people and Billy Roberts is getting the royalties. |
Subject: RE: Hey Joe From: Ritchie Date: 01 Dec 98 - 06:36 AM Hey well if no one can confirm who wrote it can I claim it as one of mine. love & happiness Ritchie p.s I also write under the names of Anon ,Traditional & unknown...now about those royalties. |
