Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jutland From: beardedbruce Date: 09 Feb 05 - 09:04 PM btw, for one of the best descriptions of the Battle of Jutland, see the 12th Edition ( 1921) of the Encyclopaedia Brittanica. All ship movements and shell by shell descriptions. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jutland From: Dave Bryant Date: 10 Feb 05 - 05:59 AM John, you know bloody well that Les wrote "Jutland" - I even found a posting from you mentioning it. I can only assume that you've got him booked soon and can't find a suitable thread to hijack in order to advertise it. Incidently when I sing the song, I just need an aide memoire which reads: Billy - Queen Mary Rodney - Invincible Johnny - The Black Prince Incidently, is Les still using the mudcat name Frog ? - it doesn't appear to be active anymore - Frogette (as used by his lovely other half, Carys) still seems to be current. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jutland From: breezy Date: 10 Feb 05 - 07:39 AM How can I hi jack my own thread Welcome back Dave |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jutland From: MoorleyMan Date: 10 Feb 05 - 09:21 AM I was privileged to sing this fine song in Les's company last year at the Bedworth Mudcat gathering, and what an occasion! My aide-memoire incidentally reflects my own slight alteration to the verse order - I tend to place Rodney / Invincible third, since it was "defeated" later than the other two ships mentioned. (Les has given his approval to this change by the way....) Oh Breezy - I do agree with Mick, there must be better ways of advertising Les at your club. Wish I could be there - say hello for me! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jutland From: GUEST,Mingulay at work Date: 10 Feb 05 - 11:38 AM Should have gone for something more obscure Breezy. Try asking for the words to Letter from Malta or Royal Oak in future! Makes you wonder if there shouldn't be a Breezy Permathread. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jutland From: George Papavgeris Date: 10 Feb 05 - 11:58 AM Last summer we found out that Gunner Bertie Burrey, a relative of Vanessa's (nee Burrey) had gone down at Jutland - on the Queen Mary. It makes the song all the more poignant for us, not that it needed it, fine song that it is. Perhaps this Friday Les can paraphrase his own lyrics and sing for "Bertie" instead of Billy? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jutland From: Herga Kitty Date: 10 Feb 05 - 02:01 PM Well, the whole point of the song is that you can put in a variety of names for the sailor, as long as the ship was at the battle of Jutland in 1916. It has been pointed out (by someone who had no regard to the folksong tradition) that the moral of the song is, arguably, not to go out with a girl called Nancy. And yes, of course, Breezy started this thread to advertise Les's appearance, with harmonies from me, at his club in St Albans tomorrow. I'll check with Les Bertie. Kitty |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Jutland From: Liz the Squeak Date: 10 Feb 05 - 04:23 PM If you want authentic names for all of those three ships mentioned above, I can give you brothers William and John Dunford, their cousin Henry Dunford and George Corben, the father in law of John's sister. I research my family history and was intrigued by the village war memorial. It seems I'm related by blood or marriage to 4 out of the 16 people commemorated on it. All 4 of these men died in the Battle of Jutland, on board the Fortune, the Queen Mary, the Black Prince and the Invincible. LTS |
