a song was brought to mind recently, and it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. all i know is a few years ago i heard this song on the late late show (in Gay Byrnes time) and was struck by it, but i don't know the singer/author or official song title, i do however know that the general end to each verse was "we'll dance to a tippearary waltz"
I have never heard it before or after. so with this miniscule scrap of info i might trigger a lead, if not, well, i tried

I went to the usual suspects at Jc's Tune Finder, Sectionalised ABC Index and Fiddlers Companion.

IF it's trad, and I suspect that it's not, does anyone have a copy of'Old Irish folk music and songs [music] : a collection of 842 Irish airs and songs hitherto unpublished / edited with annotations by P. W. Joyce'?

Regards, John

Subject: Tune Add: TIPPERARY HILLS
From: John in Brisbane

In looking for the dots for Tipperary Waltz, unsuccessfully, I came across a MIDI for Tipperary Hills and because I thought it was a nice tune in 9/8 I thought I'd post it here as ABC notation. (The tune is a complete newie to me). I only spent a few minutes on the chords, but thought they sounded fun.

Regards, John

Irish composer J. J. Vernon wrote an orchestral arrangement of THE TIPPERARY WALTZ but it doesn't say where he got the tune.

The Nenagh Guardian Newspaper - Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland reviews an album that contains THE TIPPERARY WALTZ, but you have to register to see the whole article.

Just came across your messages while looking for another Tipperary song called "Tipperary on My Mind." Am on the search for Tipperary folk songs if anyone can help me out. But I think I can help you out with the Tipperary Waltz. I heard it live down in Tipperary before, where my father comes from. It's a great song. I'll do me best.

Oh, the cows strayed in from the heather, mother. Will there be no milk for the tea?
All the time I was away wondered if anybody missed me.
I thought of my lovely Mary who works upon the farm.
I wondered if she smile at me as I offer her my arm.

CHORUS: Bow down plightly, take away slightly,
Skip around the floor with your one, two, three, four,
Hearts Help up Highly eyes shining brightly,
Dance with me, love, in the TIPPERARY WALTZ.

Well, I've killed a man in Flanders and I've killed a man in Spain,
But the men that I've killed in Ireland still haunt my dreams.
So says every soldier who's killed with lead or steel,
From the sons of Alexandra to the ghosts of our own DAN BREEN.

Well, no words could ever find the place that we call hell,
Where I prayed the light of heaven would not our dead revel
Then someone whistled a recruiting tune that filled me full of rage,
And I found these words in a soldier's hand with blood on the page.

Hope that helps, Cheers
john c
