Subject: RE: protest song from the 60s (We Didn't Know - Pa From: Joe Richman Date: 21 Jan 06 - 08:26 PM Earlier in this thread, someone said that Fidel Castro outlawed boxing in Cuba. Not true. He outlawed professional boxing for prize money, but continued a boxing program for "amateur" athletics (i.e. the Olympics, etc.). Here is a quote from an internet history of Cuban boxing: "Like all Communist regimes, Cuba scouted talent at a young age and channeled potential athletes into state-sponsored athletic schools. "I didn't choose boxing," said Cuban defector Juan Carlos Gomez in a recent interview. "They chose it for me in Cuba. I wanted to become a baseball player. That was always my dream. But, you know, in Cuba you are not allowed to make your own decisions." " Teofilo Stevenson was a well-known Cuban Heavyweight amateur who dominated the amatuer sport back in the '70s. So Fidel's Cuba certainly is no pious anti-boxing regime. Boxing, like all sport in Cuba, serves the state. Joe |

Now Vietnam is past and gone And just an echo lingers on A blood-stained page in US history But there's no time for looking back We have to move on to Iraq Cos "history is all in the past" you see Chorus: And Dubya Bush he told the nation Please don't call this an invasion It's humanitarian you see It's not for oil, or a holy war I'll tell you what were fighting for Were trying to save Iraq from the Iraquis. I don't have a contact email address to ask Tom's permission to do this but I suspect he would approve anyway. |

I use this song in my Modern US History class when I teach kids about Vietnam and escalation, who was fighting who etc. It really helps. LYNDON JOHNSON TOLD THE NATION
I got a letter from LBJ
CHORUS:
I jumped off the old troop ship,
Every night the local gentry
We go 'round in helicopters
Well, here I sit in this rice paddy, I know this is in one of the Sing Out compilations of all their songs, but I can't remember right off hand if it is in the pink one or the blue one. It's probably the one with the later editions in it. |

Subject: RE: Can you help find a protest song from the 60s From: DonMeixner Date: 06 Dec 98 - 12:29 AM Susan, My facination with Scottish Irish music I owe directly to the The Corrie Folk Trio and Paddie Bell. I found their first two Electra records in cut out bins at WT Grants Dept store in Auburn, NY. .49 if it was mono .89 if it was stereo. Since I was a big spender I went for the stereo disks. I also got a Watersons record and Paul McNeil, Traditionally at the Troubadour. I can't tell you why I was so taken by the Corries in 1966, being as there main target audience has since been identified as old ladies who wouldn't mind their negligable skills or abilities. As a 16 year old folk/rocker I was taken away to rediscover my Highland heritage which turns out to be considerable. Regards Don Meixner |

Subject: RE: Can you help find a protest song from the 60s From: GaryD Date: 04 Dec 98 - 11:07 PM Wow, powerful lyrics on both those songs... Love Paxton, but don't have many of his recordings... does he have a site? Oh, it IS good to see some of you still have kept some of your value systems from those days! We are rather inclined to become complacent when things are going well for us. We forget that some of those problems still exist and such songs are timeless. Meanwhile, there was another protest song that I remember snatches of.."Lyndon Johnson told the Nation, Have no fear of escalation...I'm trying everyone to please... and though this isn't really war, we're sending 50,000 more.... to help save Vietnam from the Vietnamese..."
Anybody know the rest? Thanks.. Gary |

Subject: RE: Can you help find a protest song from the 60s From: DonMeixner Date: 01 Dec 98 - 11:22 PM The Tom Paxton album, "Ain't That News" came out on Electra Records in 1963 or 64., "An its news news ain't that news, ain't that somethin' to see." Some days lately I find my self drivin along singing those songs from the early Tom Paxton and Phil Ochs albums and recall those days of common purpose. Common in that my friends and I had the same politics and direction. Now that I'm 48 and my friends have changed, probably at the same rate I have, I am amazed at how few of us still believe the same things. A local factory closes down and I sing Phil Ochs "Automation Song" or "Links on the Chain". I sing Tom Paxton's song Goodman and Schwerner and Chaney and I am still stunned at the power of the song. I can still see the Life magazine photos of the courtroom where the cops are all sitting and chewing Redman and grinning at the camera. If its true that we who refuse to remember the past are doomed to repeat it in the future then maybe we should all play those old songs now and then. Like Phil Ochs's "When I'm Gone" or Tom Paxton's "Don't You let Nobody Turn You Around". Just to keep us in touch with the past enough to help us temper the present. Well that got off track, but its late and I'm tired. DonMeixner |

We Didn't Know
"We didn't know," said the Burgomeister,
"We didn't know at all, we didn't hear a thing, You can't hold us to blame, what could we do? It was a terrible shame, but we can't bear the blame, Oh, no, not us, we didn't know."
"We didn't know," said the congregation,
"We didn't know," said the puzzled voters,
We Didn't Know added to DT April 2000. Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Can you help find a protest song from the 60s From: Felipa Date: 01 Dec 98 - 12:16 PM It was a Tom Paxton song (Sample verse) We didn't know, said the Burgomeister About the camps at the edge of town It was Hitler and his crew, Who tore the German nation down We saw the cattle cars, it's true And maybe they carried a Jew or two. We heard the cries as they rumbled through But what did you expect us to do
We didn't know at all, We didn't hear a thing
I tried the DT under [Tom Paxton] and got over 30 songs, none of which fitted. [we didn't know] yield two inappropriate songs. So you'll have to wait for another Mudcatter to give you more verses - or find a T Paxton songbook or a library full of back issues of Sing Out, because I know I did see the song in print years ago. |
