This recording of Illinois Blues is the one featured on the cd SHE LYIN'. The main problem is in the third stanza. Please, help. R

You go to Banglin', tell my boys
You go down to Banglin', tell my boys
What times I'm havin' in Illinois
In Illinois, Illinois
In Illinois, in Illinois

When I gin my cotton and I'm gonna sell my seed
When I gin my cotton and sell my seed
I'm gonna give my baby everything she need
Everything she need, ev'rything she need
I'm gonna give my baby everything she need

She don't let me have my love (...)
She let me have my love (...)
She'll never (...) spend my money next week
Oh, next week, never next week
She'll never spend my money next week

She'll never spend my money next week

You go down to Banglin', tell my boys
You go down in Banglin', tell my boys
What times I'm havin' up in Illinois
In Illinois, Illinois
In Illinois, in Illinois

I been in Texas and I been in Arkansas
I been in Texas and I been in Arkansas
But I never had a good time till I got to Illinois
Illinois, Illinois
In Illinois, in Illinois

The people will treat you just so–so-so
People will treat you just so-so
You'll never go back to old Banglin' no more
Never no more, never no more
Oh, never no more, never no more

Go down in Banglin', tell my boys
Go down in Banglin', tell the boys
Of the good times I'm havin' in Illinois

Harry's Blues has this version, which is quite a bit different from yours. I am still looking!

Roberto, those lines are difficult to decipher. After listening repeatedly and 'time stretching', my best bet is that the lines could be:

She don't let me have my boneless meat (x2)
She never let me spend my money next week

That is only a guess, but whatever I reckon the words he is singing begin with 'b' and 'm' - neither of them is 'love'.

Regards, Stewie.

Can anyone shed only light on where 'Banglin'" is in this song? I'm assuming from context that it's a place name, but if so, it's one that no longer seems to survive. I'm really curious about this now.

Banglin Mississippi. Youngblood spent time in Mississippi in his youth (according to the interwebs).

Don Bennett: Your comment puzzles me.

Youngblood? Are you referring to Alvin Youngblood Hart? He sang "Illinois Blues," but he didn't write it; Skip James wrote it, and the name "Banglin," or something that sounds like it, appears in James' 1931 recording, so Hart (born in 1963) couldn't have influenced him.

Anyway, I can't find any reference to a place in Mississippi called Banglin.

Jim, Don, Et Al -- Please see khandu's earlier post in this thread - 20-feb-05 footnote #1 -- Banglin was a "Lumber Camp" - best regards, Gene R.
