Subject: Chord Req: Steeleye Span: 'Edwin'
From: Muttley
Date: 25 Feb 05 - 02:40 AM

Hello folks: After 'Ruffling up the feathers in the Cuckoo's Nest' re Reynardine, I am now seeking the chords to one of my favourite Steeleye Span songs: "EDWIN". The song is also known by the title "Young Edwin of the Lowlands Low" - a bit cumbersome, wot?

I would prefer the 'Span' chording as their style suits my ABI-affected playing style.

If anyone should also possess the chords to "Little Sir Hugh" and/or Long Lankin (also the Steeleye Span versions) I would be terribly gtateful.

Thanks

Edwin    Traditional

Capo 1st fret

- Instrumental verse -
Come (Gm)all ye (D/F#)wild young (Gm)people and (D7)listen to my (Gm)song,
I will un(D/F#)fold con(Gm)cerning gold that (D7)guides so many (Gm)wrong,
Young (Bb)Emma was a servant (F)maid who (Gm)loved a sailor (D)bold
Who (Gm)ploughed the (D/F#)main much (Gm)gold to gain
For his (D7)love, so we've been (Gm)told.

He ploughed the (D/F#)main for (Gm)seven years and (D7)then returned (Gm)home,
As soon as (D/F#)he set (Gm)foot on shore, un(D7)to his love did (Gm)go.
He (Bb)went unto young Emma's (F)house, his (Gm)gold all for to (D)show
That (Gm)he had (D/F#)gained u(Gm)pon the main all in the (D7)lowlands (Gm)low.

Young Edwin, (D/F#)he sat (Gm)drinking till (D7)time to go to (Gm)bed,
He little (D/F#)thought a (Gm)sword that night would (D7)part his body and (Gm)head.
Young (Bb)Edwin, he got into (F)bed and (Gm)scarcely was a(D)sleep,
When (Gm)Emi(D/F#)ly's cruel (Gm)parents soft in(D7)to his room did (Gm)creep.
- Instrumental verse -

They stabbed him, (D/F#)dragged him (Gm)out of bed and (D7)to the sea did (Gm)go,
They sent his (D/F#)body (Gm)floating down (D7)to the lowlands (Gm)low.
"Oh (Bb)father, where's the stran(F)ger (Gm)came here last night to (D)lay?"
"Oh, (Gm)he is (D/F#)dead, no (Gm)tales can tell," the (D7)father, he did (Gm)say.

The fishes (D/F#)of the (Gm)ocean swim (D7)o'er my lover's (Gm)breast,
His body (D/F#)rolls in (Gm)motion, I (D7)hope his soul's at (Gm)rest.
The (Bb)shells upon the sea(F)shore, (Gm)rolling to and (D)fro,
Re(Gm)mind me (D/F#)of young (Gm)Edwin that (D7)ploughed the lowlands (Gm)low.

So many a (D/F#)day she (Gm)passed away and (D7)tried to ease her (Gm)mind,
Crying, "Oh, my (D/F#)friends, my (Gm)love is gone and (D7)I am left be(Gm)hind."
And (Bb)Emma, broken-hear(F)ted, was to (Gm)Bedlam forced to (D)go,
Her (Gm)shrieks were (D/F#)for young (Gm)Edwin that (D7)ploughed the lowlands (Gm)low.
- Instrumental verse -

This is Steeleye Span's version.
