Subject: RE: Blue Skirt Waltz. Lyrics, please! From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Dec 98 - 12:40 AM Of course, Reta, when I was a kid in southeast Wisconsin, I wondered why the "Blue Skirt Waltz" was always played by polka bands. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: Lyr Add: CERVENA SUKYNKA / RED SKIRT WALTZ (Blaha) From: GUEST, Dale Date: 26 Feb 03 - 09:31 AM A year or so back, I made a reasonably thorough search on this song for someone. Don't know where all my original work went to, but here is just a bit of it. "Blue Skirt Waltz" came to the attention of Frank Yankovic while he was reviewing a catalog of Bohemian music sent to him by John Mills of Mills Publishing Company. In it, the only tune that Frank found appealing was "Cervenou Sukynku," or, loosely translated, "Red Skirt Waltz." Furthermore, the song needed lyrics. At that point, Yankovic and Mills turned to one of America's finest lyricists, Mitchell Parish of " Stardust" and "Sleighride" fame, who changed "red" to "blue" and created the story of the skirt with the more familiar hue. If you want the full story of how The Blue Skirt Waltz came to be, then go here. Above excerpt taken from this site. RECOMMENDED And thanks to this one CERVENA SUKYNKA (Red Skirt Waltz) Vaclav Blaha (I added the credit) Kdyz byla jsem malicka A do skoly chodivala Vzdy mne moje maticka Do saticek oblekala Cervena sukynka musela byt Bez ni se do skoly nedalo jit Dnes takovou zase mam A nejradsi ji nosivam Refrain: Tu cervenou sukynku, Nejradsi ze vsech mam, Dnes vecer ji obleknu Az prides chlapce knam Sukynku pekne lemovanou Zdobenou faldickama At' nikdy neuvadne Laska mezi nama |
Subject: RE: Blue Skirt Waltz. Lyrics, please! From: GUEST, Dale Date: 26 Feb 03 - 09:33 AM Reason why I stuck this here, rather than in one of the other Blue Skirt threads was because of Joe's question. Polka bands play LOTS of waltzes. |
Subject: Lyr Add: BLUE SKIRT WALTZ (M Parish, V Blaha) From: GUEST,a person just surfing the net. Date: 13 Nov 04 - 11:39 PM Hello! Funny, just tonight I was looking for the same thing for my band. Here are the whole lyrics: THE BLUE SKIRT WALTZ I wandered alone one night, Till I heard an orchestra play. I met you when lights were bright, And people were carefree and gay. You were the beautiful lady in blue, I was in heaven just waltzing with you. You filled me with strange delight, And softly you stole away. I've dreamed of that night with you, Lady when first we met. We danced in a world of blue, How could my heart forget. Blue were the sky, and blue were your eyes, Just like the blue skirt you wore. Come back, blue lady come back, Don't be blue any more. God Bless and Keep the music alive! ~Rick |
