We are regular participants at the NY chanteysing at South Street Seaport. We are also planning on going down to Canberra for the Folk Festival |

Subject: RE: sea music scene in Sydney Australia From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 03 Mar 05 - 08:47 AM The Second Sea Shanty Festival is on this weekend - 6th march, at the Australian National Maritime Musuem and the next Shanty singing night on the James Craig MIGHT be be the 4th Wednesday, but if it's not we can easily gather a group of shanty singers. sandra Dug - most of the 40s are well past 50, I think the youngest is 54 & the 3 oldest have passed 60. They started 20+ years ago as The League of Fat Bearded Shantymen & have always had male & female members!! |

I had just written a long thing about the shanty festival (which I think is too early for them) and the 4th Wednesday (which is the 23rd and would probably suit them) and the probability of arranging a session anyway, and then your post appeared! Spindrift, even if we can't have a session on the James Craig, there's nothing to stop us having a session at one of the Forties places - either our place (mine and John's) or Margaret's spring to mind. We don't need much of an excuse to have a session. Charlie has been to our sessions and We are all going to be at the National, too. The Roaring Forties will be doing a presentation of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. It isn't in the program, but it will be at the Merry Muse, which is one of the venues, run by the folk club in Canberra, at 12.45pm on the Saturday, I believe. They performed it for the first time last week at another festival (Cobargo) and it was very favourably received. There are also good singing sessions every night there, which always include lots of shanties. Evan Mathieson from Queensland, a good singer of shanties, will be there too. He came to my folk club tonight and did a very nice floor spot. Speaking of the National, we always arrange meetings of Mudcatters there. Sandra started a thread a few days ago, which fell off the bottom - I've just picked it up again. I was about to link to it, but normal Mudcat has gone down, so this is a link to the thread through the backdoor - Oz Catters meet @ 2005 National Festival If you don't have a Mudcat badge and would like one, Bob Bolton makes them. Meanwhile, I have found out from Mike Richter, who organises the James Craig sessions, that there is indeed one on Wednesday 23rd, starting around 7pm. I hope that date suits you. It is between the 16th which you mentioned, and the National, so I suspect it will. Meanwhile, we have the shanty festival this Sunday, which unfortunately, for some reason, doesn't seem to be being very well publicised. It seems to be getting lost amongst all the other Sydney Harbour Week activities, but there will certainly be a lot of people around, so we should get a lot of passing traffic. When I found out you were my Santee, I was rather pleased, because we had things in common straight away, and I knew what CD's I could send. Then of course there was that James Craig stuff. All I had to do was round up a few other things you hinted at, and it all fell into place. Trouble was, the reindeer wanted pay in advance and wouldn't move a hoof until I'd given it to them :-). Anyway I'm glad you liked the things I sent. As for MY Secret Santa, I STILL haven't got my present yet *boo hoo sob sniff* Charlie, I wish you could be here too. I'll send this thread to her. JennyO - a fat quarter is a largish square of fabric (qtr yard or metre) meant for quilting. I have a few pieces myself - naturally they are Japanese fabrics & one day I might get round to using them. The program was in an email that Mike Richter sent (only to the participants, I gather) on Thursday night, which I only saw when I got home from the folk club. John didn't know about it till late last night, when he got home from a Forties practice. I'm not sure how well they are going to be able to stick to that program anyway, because there are going to be so many other noisy things happening all around, and the PA system on the Craig is not all that loud. We won't be going till about lunchtime, cos the Forties aren't on till 1.30. |

We are arriving late Monday night and are planning to stay in Sydney until Thurs morning. If anyone would like to get together for a sing on one or both of those evenings we would be so delighted. We were planning on a few days in Canberra with old friends (Barbara & I lived in Canberra about 20 yrs ago). Then our plan is to go down to Victoria for a few days and then back to Canberra for the National. If as you say there is a sing on the Jenny Craig on Wednesday the 23rd perhaps we could make it back to Sydney that day and then down to the National on Thursday. Whilst I was typing this, the Mudcat took its customary 18.30 (Sydney time) dive to the murky depths. Well, I'll post cookieless!) I knocked up some badges when a number of 'Catters realised they would be at a festival outside Sydney (St Albans) ... then improved the design to make more badges to aid a gathering at the (Australian) National Folk Festival. They feature an improved (via Genuine Fractals) image of the Mudcat/banjo logo from the Forum page at the top and the blue text saying Mudcat Café at the bottom. Your Mudcat name is in the lower middle, in cursive font. I colour laser-print them on good coated white paper, laminate them and trim each to about the size of a vertical security tag ... punch a hole for a pin or thong - and they do help us recognise each other at our gatherings. I have to check to see if I already have one for Foolestroupe ... I'll run one up for you as well ... on spec ... and I'll happily add in any other 'Catter that anticipates getting along to the National ... or St Albans. Regards, Bob |

I watched & photographed the Old Pyrmont Bridge open & close twice to let big vessels go past. I only took about 60 pics, very few for me. Looking forward to meeting you, Al & Barbara sandra |

There is normally a Tuesday night session at a pub in Balmain - The Riverview, but a sing at somebody's place on Wednesday might be nice, too. As far as I know, the shanty session on the James Craig on the 23rd is still on (Jenny Craig is a weight loss program :-)), so if you would like to come back for that too, that would be great. Subject: RE: sea music scene in Sydney Australia From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 07 Mar 05 - 08:42 AM welllll, what really hapened was that those of us who attended had a great time, & lots of passing tourist folks paid their gold coin to explore the James Craig cos we were moored in the middle of Darling Harbour (next to Harbourside). I'm saying 'we' cos those of us in the know could go places on the Craig where the tourists could not go!! It was organised on the run & barely advertised as Mike did not know who would be performing until almost the day, but it could have been mentioned on the Museum & Heritage Fleet websites, details TBA. There was 1 sentance in the Folk fed magazine so I used that to advertise on the folk lists & at the Dog. The Security guards were their usual disorganised selves & refused to let some performer's cars into the parking lot. It certainly would have been a profitable day for the Craig as it relies totally on donations & volunteers. I had 2 films developed today & will try to scan them & send some to Jeff tomorrow. On second thoughts, I'll replace the word 'tomorrow' with 'one day soon when I figure out how get the scanner working properly'. sandra |
