Hi,

there's a tune whirling round my head, or more correctly, the beginning of a tune.
I need the name to find the rest of it.

I tried to write it down (but I can't really write music, so I omitted all the rhythm part of it - I can read it, but can't write it down ...).

So I wrote it down using notes of the same length, because I'm not sure about the rhythm.

Should it have F# rather than F?

Playing with it, I almost hear "Away in a Manger" (American folk Christmas song) or "Jesu Bambino", which is often combined with it.

Thanks to all who had a look at the tune. And sorry about the lack of information from me.

Anahata - I am very bad at music theory (so treat everything I say in that area with great care) ...
Key should be one # - whatever that key is called.

I only can play tunes in # and ## on my tin whistles - and only know that there is one difference (afaik that's c vs. c#) when fingering it on the tin whistle. Comparing with tunes that have one or two ## it needs the same fingering for that c/c# (I really am quite bad at music theory) as in tunes with just one #.

I've tried a bit with the rhythm (by having the notation software play it to me. It still doesn't fit what's in my mind, but much closer.

leeneia, I'm not sure about any F# in there (see above), it should have one # at the start of the line ;-)

I found "Away in a Manger" at the Tune finder - the first part seems to be the same, but after that, it is quite different.
It doesn't have Jesu Bambino.

John Giok, the Flower of Scotland is quite different.

The beginning is almost 'Road to Dundee'.
I can also hear 'He shall feed his flock' from Handel's Messiah!

I agree with Little Robyn - I can hear a bit of He Shall Feed His Flock, from Handel's Messiah. Note the threads on Twas on a Night Like This and Carol of the Bagpipers.

Hm, doesn't look like Bagpipers ('Twas on a night...") or Gesu Bambino-- unless you have the pitches all wrong.

Must be that well-known tune I get in MY head, "Dah Dumm Dum de Dum!"

I have a MIDI around here somewhere of "Twas on...." I sent MMario in email... maybe he can hang it up here so you can hear it?

The first phrase is "Away in a Manger," and the second phrase is "Streets of Laredo (Bard of Armaugh)"?

When I sounded out the new version of the tune in your 05:55 PM post of 5 March, the first thing that came to mind was the American version of "Away in a Manger." But the second part of your tune almost sounds like "The Bard of Armagh." Since Mary in Kentucky thought precisely the same thing, I've got a hunch that you might have a few notes misplaced in your example, and that the song you're thinkig of is indeed, "The Bard of Armagh." Also, "The Bard" would be more likely a tune played on the tin whistle than would be "Away in a Manger." Have a listen to the midi at the link below. I'd be curious to know if Mary's and my hunch is correct.

I couldn't hear the midi linked-to above, so I checked the source code. It used the bgsound tag only, which can only be heard using Internet Explorer. Since I've now changed to the wonderful browser, Firefox, I had no sound. I know all these things because Barry Taylor (the writer of this beautiful midi) graciously explained these things to me when I first ventured onto the net and fell in love with the music on his pages.

The first part is definitely closed to Road to Dundee than Bard of Armagh but there is a close similarity between the two tunes so I reckon we'll never know for sure what Mudguard is hearing. I'll be in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Whitsun for the beer festival but as one rarely eats over the three days, I guess the offer of a free dineer is superfluous! If Mudguard can make it to Rothenburg o d T, we could have a drink together. I'll probably be travelling with Nigel Denver who could sing all the different versions of those/that tune.

I am quite sure I got the pitch of the notes right, the duration of the notes is something else ...

It's the 3rd movement of Ercol's Furniture Suite, from a section nick-named The Tallboy or Hautboy.

I have recorded the piece of the tune that I remember.
Sorry for the poor sound quality, I only have a very cheap microphone attached to my computer, and the only recording software is the Windows sound recorder, thus it is in wav format.

Maybe that helps with identifying this tune ...
