From: GUEST,Hess

Hello - just playing around with the open G tuning, which always seems to sound great when others use it for celtic guitar!
Can someone please give me some ideas for runs, or point me in the direction of a site?
Thanks alot
Hess

The big run is from the fifth fret 4th string down (5, 4, 2 open), which you use all the time as an opener to songs. You can go up the same way, or work on the fifth string.   One nice thing about open G and open D is you can move up and down the strings and use the bar on the fifth string as a punctuation mark (plink, plink, plink, strum). (Also don't forget that when you bar on the fifth or seventh frets you can use your other fingers to essentially play most of a scale on the first, second, and third strings. That can be an alternative "run" or two in the middle of a song.

yours,

Peter T.

Thanks for the reply and thoughts Peter - gives me some more ideas to play around with! (was getting rather stale with what I'd sussed).

Any other thoughts ...anyone?....very gratefully accepted.
Cheers
Hess

Hess,

If you tell me the tuning--that is the notes when you strum an open chord, I might be able to offer some suggestions. I used some open tunings years back and had lots of fun with them.

Well, after you have worked out the I IV V chords straight, try making the IV chord the
I chord of a new key, and go from there, that is all really interesting.

The best thing about open tunings is you can play blues slide guitar -- if you haven't got a slide, I would rush out and get one!!!

yours,

Peter T.
