I'd like to get the tune (staff notation or ABC) to Nic Jones' recording of Sir Patrick Spens. He writes it is basically the one in Christie's Traditional Ballad Airs. Anyone knows if the book is available? Thanks. R

Only from antiquarian dealers as a rule, though I struck lucky on ebay. The tune is also in Bronson, II, 30, 58.1: on this occasion Bronson retains Christie's second strain. Christie also printed a second Spens tune, with a Young Beckie text set to it (also reproduced in Bronson as 58.4).

Haven't heard Nic's, but is it the same tune as Martin Carthy's?

According to Reinhard Zierke's site: Martin Carthy - Sir Patrick Spens he did use the same tune as Nic on the version on Signs of Life (reissued on The Carthy Chronicles).
