Subject: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Gearoid Date: 07 Dec 98 - 11:04 AM I would appreciate if some some coul give me the name of a couple of pubs in Dublin where the trad and ballad sessions still take place Not including Johhny Fox's, Sean O'Caseys or Widow Scanlans or the touristy Fitzsimons |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Date: 07 Dec 98 - 12:57 PM Every Friday night in the Trinity Bar, Pearse Street, the "Goilin Club" meets. Regularly attended by greats such as Frank Harte, Niamh Parsons (Arcady), Barry Gleeson, Luke Cheevers....and anybody who is anybody in folk singing. It is a small and intimate venue and EVERYBODY is welcome to contribute a song. A great session. Frank McGrath |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Barry Finn Date: 07 Dec 98 - 02:11 PM Does Mick Murphy, whose lately been staying Boston, attend this singer's session? I know he's been at one that's in Dublin? Thanks Barry |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Liam's Brother Date: 07 Dec 98 - 02:38 PM Hi Gearoid & Barry! If you want traditional unaccompanied singing in Dublin, the Goilin's the one. The Trinity Pub's very easy to find too. Just take the DART train and jump out the window as it crosses Pearse Street. You should come straight through the roof and into the session. All the best, Dan |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Martin Ryan. Date: 07 Dec 98 - 04:54 PM Dan Must be sure to be more careful where I sit in future, at the Goilin! Gearoid If its instrumental music you're interested in, the best starting point is probably Hughes's of Chancery Street. Its beside the Four Courts - the main court complex in Dublin, a few bridges upriver from the city centre. There's a session every night (sometimes with a second in the "snug") - and the standard is very good. Also a good place to ask about other sessions - its rotten with musicians, dancers and singers. p.s. All this at night, incidentally. During the day the clientele is mainly lawyers and criminals (no cracks about tautology, please). |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Gearoid Date: 08 Dec 98 - 07:41 AM Guys Thanks for that, this could be the start of something beautiful. Coincidence or what (I often drink in O'Neills on a Friday) Is the "Golin Club" in the main lounge or a side room ??? I've never been in the Trinity ! Thanks again Gearoid |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Martin Ryan. Date: 08 Dec 98 - 08:05 AM Gearoid Upstairs! Fri 18th Dec. is the Christmas special (known as "pudding night") and fills up very early. Otherwise, around 10 p.m. on Friday sees things starting. Regards p.s. I've never been in O'Neills! |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Gearoid Date: 08 Dec 98 - 08:45 AM Martin 10pm sounds like a good excuse for a late bar to me. O'Neills is a nice place (good for Lunch), the atmosphere is pretty good on a good Friday night. Gets pretty packed also (with guys from the IFSC and surroundings) thanks |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Date: 14 Dec 98 - 09:58 PM There were great pubs on Howth and up in Naas. Its years since I was back but I'll bet some of these locals know exactly the ones I refer to. The Dubliners use to hang out in the one on Howth until they became so famous. For the price of a pint you could see them every week-end. I hope its still going strong and hasn't become a tourist trap. The pub in Naas would have lots of local talent of all sorts and it was a roomy pub. Darn! I sure do envy you. Have a great time. God Bless |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: MDENNERLY Date: 15 Dec 98 - 12:57 PM AS AN EXILED DUBLINER FROM HOWTH ITSELF I CLEARLY REMEMBER THE ABBEY TAVERN AS A GREAT PLACE FOR MUSIC WITH BARNEY AND JOHN THERE ALMOST EVERY NIGHT. BARNEY STILL LIVES IN HOWTH WITH JOKA HIS WIFE.AS FOR THE MUSIC IN DUBLIN ONE PLACE THAT HASN'T BEEN MENTIONED ABOVE IS THE COBBLESTONES I FEEL ASHAMED THAT I CANNOT OFFER DIRECTIONS BUT I WAS INEBRIATED WHEN I DISCOVERED IT. ANOTHER PLACE WORTH A MENTION ESPECIALLY FOR SUNDAY LUNCH IS MOTHER REDCAPS. |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Martin Ryan. Date: 15 Dec 98 - 01:06 PM The Cobblestone is in Queen Street - not far from Hughes's! Good pub for music, alright. Regards |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Harald Date: 15 Dec 98 - 05:21 PM What's about seisuns at Slattery's (Capel St.)? |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Gearoid Date: 16 Dec 98 - 04:55 AM Slattery's is more of a "new band" scene and cover band scene. Mother Redcaps is excellent, not always for trad or ballads, but if you go there on a week night with a couple of friends and start a session, they won't have a problem locking you in and letting you sing away. Worth giving it a try (Nice pint also) (For any Gardai watching --- I'm only joking NOT) Gearoid |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Gearoid Date: 15 Jan 99 - 04:05 AM Ana This might be of some use Gearoid |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: AuneK Date: 15 Jan 99 - 05:34 AM I can realy recomend Mother Redcaps. |
Subject: RE: Dublin Pubs ?????? From: Date: 08 Feb 99 - 06:05 AM I was in Johnny Fox's this weekend. They do a good range of seafood. The place was crowded out at 4.30 on Sunday. I was also in Mother Redcaps but they weren't serving food so I didn't stay. That was on Saturday. As you can see I was after food and not music. Dublin was awash with drunken French rugby supporters on Saturday evening. Thanks for the Dublin pub guide. I'll try a few more next Saturday evening before I fly back to Glasgow. Sean Mac Ruaraidh |
