Are they a Canadian band that among many other things did the soundtrack for the Film "Titantic" Raptor?
I had a great Session with one of the band when I was playing in Toronto. Hence my thinking they are Canadian based...but then I could be way off and it was just herself that hailed from Canada! What a Fiddler she is.

There are a few bands in a similiar vain.
I'll look through my CD's and have a think and get back to you.
Probably by then though there will be several suggestions that I will be thinking of posting for you...lol

Not sure if they are Canadian or not. If you like them, Great Big Sea may suit. Or (shudder) Tempest. Actually, while watching the VH1 Behind the Music thing about Aerosmith (as comedy), I was thinking one could make a fabulous Behind the Music parody of a "Celtic rock" hair band like Tempest. They are just so...so...eighties?

Try "Flook". They have much the same feel as "Gaelic Storm," and their flautist is amazing!

They're based out of Boston. They have several CDs out. Great Big Sea is a good option among the Canadian groups. Also Blackthorn. Also Molly's Revenge, Brother [Australian Scots], and Wicked Tinkers. For the old standbys like them, try Old Blind Dogs [Scots]

They work out of California I think. They're not Canadian. As far as Nationalities..Afew Americans, a guy from UK, and a member from Africa originally. Great Big Sea would be a close comparison even though they kinda stick to original music now.

Ellery the Fiddle player is from Ohio! I'm an blowin to the US from Scotland who was in Canada for the first time in my Life...everyone was Canadian....lol.
Raptor Ill PM with some suggestions...Great Big Sea...yip, There is, however, no shortish of really good Celtic Bands out there now.
Just depends on what style you enjoy.
Moving Hearts last Album 'The Storm' is still one of my Favs.

They did a UK tour a few years ago when the 'Titanic' film came out on video - they appeared briefly in the film.

Nice bunch, decent band, but there are plenty of bands in the UK and Ireland who are just as good.

i was thinking i had heard of a band by that name in the reno Nevada area, but their web site says:
In 1997, Gaelic Storm was catapulted out of their formative pub haunts by an appearance in the blockbuster film Titanic. Cast as the "party band" in the steerage scene, they landed the part while still drinking pints and playing weekly at O'Brien's, a pub in their adopted home-town of Santa Monica, CA

If my memory serves me correctly, I think that I saw Gaelic Storm at The Gloucester Docks Festival some years ago. Can anyone substantiate that?

In the late eighties/early nineties there was a band called STORM, doing the UK festivals and eventually opening for U2 on Zooropa tour. Also recorded Ship Ahoy with Sinead O'Connor.

They were Tommy McManamon (pogue then popes) and James McNally ( Pogue, then himself.)

Lots of whistles/pipes/mandolins/banjo etc.) Excellent band. Also collaborated with Marxman.

Just got back from the night out listening, dancing, hollering, and clapping to this wonderful band. What a blast! Super musicians, very talented and raw, wild energy kept the crowd going through two encores.

I would have preferred the amplified volume to have been a little less, but that did nothing to detract from a great night out. Thanks for the recommendations. They are a FUN band!

Raptor - you being a Newfie I'm surprised that you left off one of my
very favorite bands that we've been trying to get to come down here to the North Texas Irish Festival for years - The Irish Descendants.
They are simply outstanding. Oh, and for the record (well, my record, anyway) Altan is #1 and everyone else is bunched up right behind, like Cherish The Ladies, Solas, Smithfield Fair, Old Blind Dogs, Battlefield Band, Danu, Lunasa, Four Men And A Dog, and a host of others - old and new.
