Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: Janice in NJ Date: 21 Jan 06 - 07:30 PM I never understood the popularity of this recently composed, overly maudlin song when there are so many truly wonderful and authentic songs of Irish emigrants. See for example all the wonderful numbers in The Irish in America collection by Dan Milner and Bob Conroy. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: Big Mick Date: 21 Jan 06 - 10:28 PM Janice, this song is neither maudlin nor non authentic. I agree with you on Dan Milner's work (he does most of the collecting and reconstruction of the music he plays with Bob. Kilkelly is compelling because it is written from actual letters of Peter Jones Great Grandfather. I would say that makes it very authentic. As to the maudlin piece, once again it accurately describes the times and the troubles faced by Irish Emigrants in the US and the families left behind. I would agree that it is sung to death, and many of the interpretations lack depth. But the song is a jewel. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 21 Jan 06 - 11:24 PM For background on the song, try Kilkelly I've had a link to it on my own website (www.jeremiah.ca) for years. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: GUEST Date: 22 Jan 06 - 12:07 PM ICK! God, please let this long dirge go out of style soon! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: John Hernandez Date: 22 Jan 06 - 07:21 PM Mick is right that the song is based upon authentic letters, but he is also right that it has been sung to death. "Kilkelly" has become folk music's equivalent of "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling." I agree with Janice that it is overly maudlin, and I also agree with the anonymous guest who calls it a long dirge. Enough already. There are many better songs. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: GUEST,Elaine Date: 25 Feb 06 - 09:20 AM Hi is it possible to get a copy of the sheet music please also? My email is summertimes1980@hotmail.com Thanks Elaine |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: GUEST Date: 25 Feb 06 - 09:40 AM I do like this song, but I can't imagine why anyone would need sheet music for it. It is pretty bog basic - no more than four chords. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: Arne Date: 17 Mar 06 - 10:52 AM I agree with Janice that it is overly maudlin, and I also agree with the anonymous guest who calls it a long dirge. Even hearing it for the 1000th time, it still chokes me up. Maybe a bit of repressed guilt ... we are the diaspora of the diaspora; my sibs are scattered across the U.S. and Canada, and our immediate family is the only one which left the "old country". And I haven't been back there since '84; my knowledge of the words "uncle", "aunt", and even "grandparents" is pretty much vicarious. And now, as my parents themselves are in their late 70's, every next day they may well be gone, and we see them maybe once a year, So when I hear the song, I keep saying I'll mend my ways and take more time for family ... and forget these promises promptly until the next time. Moloney, O'Connell and Keane have one of the definitive versions, of course. Call it maudlin, if you will, and just wait for the next song ... it'll be along in ten minutes or so. And I'm sure that there's some songs that really touch you that might leave me cold too. NP, there's plenty enough room for all. Overplayed??? Hardly. You want overplayed and maudlin and definitely non-Irish and non-authentic? You'd do better to set your sights on Uncle Shelby's "Unicorn Song" (definitely funny, tho). And go rail against "When Irish Eyes...." Cheers, |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 17 Mar 06 - 12:10 PM O dear great & powerful Sorcha - yet one more request for a copy of the sheet music! Not for me - it's for a friend. Really. jeremiah@bfree.on.ca |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: GUEST,thurg Date: 18 Mar 06 - 12:44 AM This is a great song - inspired and well-crafted. Maudlin it is not. However, any song will drive you nuts if you hear it too often, and in less-than-inspired-and-well-crafted performances. Bear in mind, however, that, as was mentioned recently on another thread, "overplayed" is relative - I, for one, have never heard "Kilkenny" performed live. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: GUEST,Scarhart Date: 27 Mar 06 - 10:16 PM I too would love to get the sheet music. My address is scarhart @ chivalry.com. A recent visitor to Cantaria sparked my interest; all the comments in this thread have definitely added to that interest, just to hear what all the comments on both sides mean. Thanks in advance, - S |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: harpmolly Date: 27 Mar 06 - 10:41 PM I too get choked up, though I recognize why people say it's maudlin. I guess I have a reasonably high maudlin threshold (as long as they don't sing it on "Celtic Woman" I can probably put up with it ;)). My personal connection to this song is because when I got the chance to spend the summer in Ireland in 1994, when I arrived there was a call in from my mom telling me that my grandfather had been taken off dialysis and only had a few days to live. I adored my grandfather (and the feeling I believe was mutual) and for years it had been established that I would sing at his funeral. But this was my only chance to spend the summer in Ireland--if I went back, I couldn't afford to return. I had to make the decision pretty quickly, and after thinking about it, it seemed to me that my grandfather (who was of strong Irish descent) would not want me to give up the chance to get to know Ireland. I chose to stay. But that doesn't mean it didn't hurt like hell. So, every time I hear, "And it's funny the way he kept talking about you, he called for you at the end;/Why don't you think about coming to visit? we'd love to see you again...", of course it feels pretty personal. Argh. Combined with my harp playing/grandmother's deathbed story, I'm beginning to sound like a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. I guess that would explain why I have a high maudlin threshold *sigh*. But it's all true. Molly |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: GUEST,JimP Date: 15 Aug 06 - 07:05 AM I'm really tempted to ask for the sheet music as well, just to pile on. To tell the truth, though, I really just want the chords. Since the Great and Mighty Sorcha's sheets apparently don't have them, I guess I'll just have to try and 'finger' them out on my own. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 16 Aug 06 - 06:22 PM You're welcome, Sorcha! (BTW, sorry to hear about your bow troubles). Ref, the words,/a> are HERE and the chords are HERE at the Mudcat. Don't have to locate them elsewhere. For the newcomers, there is a box at the top right of the screen, which says, Lyric and Knowledge Search. It will allow a search of the information found in the Digital TRadition database of songs, AS WELL as the Mudcat Forum. Included are many tunes in MIDI format. In addition, if you look WAY UP, You can see a box that says Quick Links. Well, JUST BELOW that is a line that includes the word LINKS. if you click on that, you can locate information which many members of the Mudcat have found useful. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Kilkelly Ireland From: GUEST Date: 10 Sep 06 - 10:36 PM HI, I found the lyrics at www.kloosterman.be/topten-jones.php I found it under Jim's name I think. Also sung by Jim brannigan. It sounds a little different from Paul Jones but it's there along with the words. My Mother is a war bride from Inverness Scotland. She's never heard it before. At the age of 89 it hit home harder than I had expected. She cried and told me of the parralles in her life. She moved to NFLD Canada in 1945. Hope this helps you. Saxon_pg |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 03 May 07 - 08:45 PM Sent e-mails to the two guys who can't click on my link above. I swear some people can't read English. 8-) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: Jeri Date: 03 May 07 - 09:13 PM My personal feeling is that if people really want the music they can read the damned thread. If they ask a question, they can read the damned thread for the replies. I don't e-mail people who are too lazy to do these things. I don't e-mail people I don't know, PERIOD, unless I have some feeling that they're genuine. It's just too easy to wind up on spam directories, and people often get addresses by writing, "e-mail me at..." If other people feel comfortable winding up in the address books of strangers who may be e-mail harvesters, who may send spam themselves, who may one day be infected by a data-harvester worm that collects your address, or who sends your e-mail address un-protected in the headers of messages to everyone in their address book, one or more of whom may one day be infected with a data-harvester worm, then it's their prerogative. It's not something I'm going to risk, though. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 03 May 07 - 09:18 PM Jeri, I don't worry about it, Jeri. I figure that some people are genuine. I did point out that they could have had the sheet music if they had read the messages in the thread. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: Sorcha Date: 04 May 07 - 05:24 PM Jeri, I've rather felt that way about this damn sheet music for a LONG time! Read the bloody thread!!! (There are days when I wish I'd never discovered it!--LOL) |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 04 May 07 - 08:07 PM Got a reply from Seth Hackett saying he was looking for a "more complete" version. What does he mean by that? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: Sorcha Date: 04 May 07 - 08:09 PM I haven't the FOGGIEST notion!!! We've got the melody, the verses, the chords....maybe he could just write his 'more complete' version??????? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kilkelly Sheet Music From: Jeri Date: 04 May 07 - 08:15 PM He sounds like he wants an arrangment. I agree with Sorcha. Perhaps he can do some research or write his own. Most musicians I know want the bare bones so THEY can flesh it out. |
Subject: Chords Add: KILKELLY (Peter Jones) From: GUEST,Reverand Dave Date: 21 Feb 08 - 05:06 PM Wow! What a treat to find this thread. I did a Google search on Steve and Peter Jones after listening to their album just now that contains this song. I purchased it at the Bethesda Co-Op back in 1985 or so and it has always been one of my favorite albums. The stereo has been in storage for many years and it has been a real treat having it out again and listening to some of these rare gems. I wanted to see if they were still playing but couldn't find any current references to them or a website for them. Anybody know if they are still playing? I've been living in California for the last 20 years but do occasionally get back to the DC area and would love to hear them play again. At any rate, they have all the lyrics to their songs as well as the chords on the liner notes to the album and this is what they have for this song. I've used the preview function to do my best to get the chords lined up with the lyrics. Am C Kilkelly, Ireland, Eighteen and Sixty, G Am My Dear and loving son, John C Your good friend the schoolmaster Pat McNamara's G Am So good as to write these words down C G Your brothers have all gone to find work in England F G The house is so empty and sad Am C The crop of potatoes is sorely infected G Am A third to half of them bad C G And your sister Bridget and Patrick O'Donnell F G Are going to get married in June Am C Your mother says not to work on the railroad G Am And be sure to come on home soon. The rest of the verses repeat this pattern. The album says this song was "taken from letters written to our great-great-grandfather from his family in County Mayo". If anyone knows if this album, or any other material by Steve and Peter, ever made it to CD, please let me know. My email address is david at vibrant-life.org |
