Subject: Irish music for 2nd fiddle From: GUEST,TIA Date: 18 Apr 05 - 01:00 PM For her spring recital, my daughter wants to play several Irish fiddle tunes. Her teacher has asked me (a tenor banjo hack) to play along with her. It's her recital, so I don't want to play the melody. Using ABC tunefinder, I found a "second violin" part for The Harvest Home, but now I need one for a few other tunes (Merry Blacksmith in particular). I'm not good enough to improvise or make 'em up myself. Anyone know a book or other source for 2nd fiddle parts? Thanks, Tim |

Subject: RE: music for 2nd fiddle (or banjo) From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 19 Apr 05 - 05:31 AM The whole point of the '2nd' part is that it plays other notes in the key of the piece, and usually of the chord which that section of the bar is set in. Briefly, it can move in the same direction (parallel), opposite direction (counterpoint), at the same pace, or often slower, rarely faster. It can usually be thought of as 'harmonising. There can also be 'incidental' or 'passing' notes to move from one of the 'main' types notes mentioned above. Now you are thoroughly confused by the theory, aren't you?... :-) |

Subject: RE: music for 2nd fiddle (or banjo) From: Mooh Date: 19 Apr 05 - 07:55 AM There's a book called "The Twin And Triple Fiddle Tune Book" by Deborah Greenblatt, ISBN 0-89898-255-3 which contains tunes like Swallowtail, Fisher's Hornpipe, Haste To The Wedding, Soldier's Joy, and the like. It's standard notation, no ABC. I could email you the contents page if you like. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: music for 2nd fiddle (or banjo) From: GUEST,TIA Date: 20 Apr 05 - 01:00 PM By darn, I did it. Sat down last night with ABC's of the melodies, an old copy of MUSE, and a tenor banjo, and actually wrote harmony parts. Not very good I'm sure, but it's a first for me (and I'm accompanying a very cute 3rd grader, so nobody's going to be looking at or listening to me anyhow). |
