Subject: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC From: Pauline L Date: 20 Apr 05 - 01:52 AM I just got an email from Sandy LaPrelle saying that her daughter, Elizabeth LaPrelle, will be on Prairie Home Companion on April 30 at 6 PM. The show will be a live broadcast from Norfolk, Virginia. |

Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Nancy King Date: 20 Apr 05 - 09:15 PM Saw Elizabeth last weekend, and she's VERY excited about this -- small wonder! Yup, the 6 p.m. time slot is here in the Washington DC area -- check local listings for West Coast (or Alaska) times. WETA repeats the show on Sunday at noon; other stations may repeat it at other times. Those who have been to the last couple of FSGW Getaways have been very impressed with Elizabeth's music. She is a 17-year-old singer from Rural Retreat, VA, and she's just fantastic. Her strong voice and traditional style are perfect for the old ballads and songs she loves to sing. Her CD, "Rain and Snow" is a marvelous collection of traditional songs. If you're worried about the future of traditional music, rest assured it is in good hands with Elizabeth. Don't forget to tune in to Prairie Home Companion on April 30! Nancy |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: GUEST,WYS Date: 20 Apr 05 - 09:21 PM If that's the Saturday night show, the audio is always archived for play-on-demand online as well. There will be photos online after the show. Sometimes I think in the past they would webcast the show live with video or with pix that would upodate every few monutes-- dunno if they still do. (But the archive is just audio, no video.) I like to catch the good songs with Total Recorder. ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: GUEST,Nancy King at work Date: 21 Apr 05 - 06:39 PM Well, Bruce, I don't think you'd get much more than audio if you tuned in to the radio program... |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: beardedbruce Date: 21 Apr 05 - 07:18 PM true- but I could ALMOST drive down to Norfolk... |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Pauline L Date: 21 Apr 05 - 09:04 PM Bruce, I don't think you could do that and make it into work the next day. Nancy, what you wrote is a wonderful intro to Elizabeth. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Pauline L Date: 21 Apr 05 - 09:16 PM For more information on Elizabeth, including sound bites, lyrics, and performance schedule, check her website. I just did, and I found that she is going to perform at the Takoma Park Folk Festival in September. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Ferrara Date: 23 Apr 05 - 02:32 PM This is really neat news. A lot of young people who are interested in folk music are hearing, and therefore reproducing, a very commercial form that's a long way from the history and traditions of the genre. In the British Isles they have a term, "Tradition Bearer," to indicate someone who is not only learning old songs, but also trying to understand their context and history and musical uniqueness. IMHO Elizabeth has the real potential to be a tradition bearer. And she's such a great singer, and so much fun, that she's a terrific ambassador (ambassadress?) for Appalachian songs and ballads sung in the old time way. Since the start of the year she has sung for Folk Music Week at the Kansas City Public Library; for kids and adults at a 4H camp; and for serious students of the ballad tradition at the Folger Institute in Washington, D.C. So at 17 she's already creating more awareness and appreciation for this kind of music. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: SINSULL Date: 23 Apr 05 - 10:20 PM Strange - Linn (batgoddess) said she heard her today while driving. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: SINSULL Date: 23 Apr 05 - 10:21 PM Sorry - I misread her post. Saturday, the 30th it is. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Ferrara Date: 23 Apr 05 - 11:14 PM She was on the NPR program "Back to the Blue Ridge" in January. I missed that entirely -- didn't even read the e-mail about it until after the show. I hope I remember to listen to this one during one of the times it's on! It's only a week away, surely I can hold a thought in my mind for a whole week just this once! Sigh.... Sing Out had an article and photo about Elizabeth receiving the Henry Reed award in the March 2005 issue as well as a review of her CD. That was really neat too. BTW John LaPrelle is a member of Mudcat now although unlike some of us (me for instance) he resists the temptation to jump into discussions unless he has something particular to say. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: GUEST Date: 24 Apr 05 - 04:26 PM Yeah...I'm a member although I can't remember how to log in and the cookie that made it happen automatically vanished in a hard-drive crash... or maybe the technology doesn't work way up in White Rock Hollow where we live. Besides I don't really have much to offer but bursting pride and naked ambition when it comes to Elizabeth. Best to all -Biglappy |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Ferrara Date: 25 Apr 05 - 12:09 AM John I think that when you get to the forum you'll see a link that says "Become a Member" or something like that. I can't actually see it now because my cookie is working right now but from time to time the cookie disappears and I just click this link. When you go to the link I think it just asks for your Mudcat name & e-mail address and resets your cookie. I know it's pretty idiot proof, based on the fact that I've done it successfully at least three times :-) |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: GUEST Date: 25 Apr 05 - 12:49 AM I gave it another try, but there is no cookie for me. No telling where I messed up. I might have misremembered my password. The screen for idiots who can't log on promised to mail me a password but one didn't come (and I have only one email address). I expect I'll be "Guest" forever. -Biglappy |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Ferrara Date: 27 Apr 05 - 04:04 PM This link, to Prairie Home Companion's Station Finder, tells what time and what station will carry the show in dozens of different cities. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: artbrooks Date: 27 Apr 05 - 04:14 PM Nice (if short) article about her and a review of her CD in the new (Spring 2005) Sing Out. No link, however. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Ferrara Date: 28 Apr 05 - 09:22 PM Refresh. Because I'm too lazy to PM the people individually who I think would like to hear her. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: karen k Date: 29 Apr 05 - 12:06 AM Thanks for the station finder thing Rita. Thought I was going to miss it on Sat. as I'll be at a Jean Ritchie concert in Boston. But it's repeated on Sun. so I'll get to hear it. |

Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Bill D Date: 30 Apr 05 - 07:26 PM Yep..she was indeed. That first song, "Black is the Color", was done so well with all the little nuances and control, it's hard believe she's that young....that was quite a way to make her first national broadcast. Having heard her in person several times, I know that she..(and her whole family) really love music and the traditions. Good folks and good music. Durn, I wish I'd found something I did that well when I was young. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: jimmyt Date: 30 Apr 05 - 08:53 PM I was on my way home from Chattanooga and heard the show. What an incredible talent she is! I was going to start a thread about it when I got home.! Wow, what a voice. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: bflat Date: 30 Apr 05 - 09:02 PM Hadn't seen the thread but caught the show. She was wonderful. Bravo! Ellen |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Ferrara Date: 30 Apr 05 - 11:52 PM Prairie Home Companion has a chat room for chit-chat about the show. Someone posted the entire playlist for tonight's show. It was VERY ambitious. Elizabeth was supposed to do Rain and Snow as well as Angel Band but a lot of songs by various performers had to be cut. You have to register and log in to post to their chat room. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Nancy King Date: 01 May 05 - 12:05 AM Great job, Elizabeth! Congratulations on your national debut! |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Ferrara Date: 01 May 05 - 12:28 AM It was really nice that Elizabeth sang her second song with her mom. (and did you notice, the audience totally loved it?) There was so much cheering and applause after both songs that I was sitting there with tears in my eyes. Bill and I were both just beaming, so impressed by how poised Elizabeth was and how beautifully she sang. Well she always does, but to carry it off perfectly on Prairie Home Companion! Wow. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Big Mick Date: 01 May 05 - 12:42 AM What an absolute joy to listen to this marvelous voice, and out of one so young. Her ability to nuance the music, to sing it with such passion that is beyond her years, is a tribute to biglappy and Sandy. One only gets an understanding through teaching, and exposure. The thought that our beloved traditional music is in such hands leaves me reassured. I sincerely hope our young friend keeps her perspective, as she is getting an awful lot of praise very early. But with parents such as she has, and the wonderful values and attitude she seems to be in possession of, I would say we are safe for another generation. Congratulations, Elizabeth, on a wonderful performance. Congratulations Mom and Dad, on a wonderful job of upbringing. See you soon, Mick |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Jeri Date: 01 May 05 - 11:50 AM I'm listening right now, cuz I missed it last night. The first time I heard her, I didn't think she could get any better... ...oops. I believe the PHC archives consist of images too. I haven't watched/listened to the archives for a while. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: wysiwyg Date: 01 May 05 - 11:52 AM Archive should be up sometime tomorrow. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: robomatic Date: 01 May 05 - 12:48 PM It's on the air in Boston on the Sunday repeat. I'm listening to her as I type. She's all you say and more. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Nancy King Date: 01 May 05 - 03:28 PM I'd love to know Elizabeth's impressions of what it was like to be on the show! |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Ferrara Date: 01 May 05 - 07:43 PM I hate to even ask this. Did anyone miss the show on Sunday because of getting the wrong time, either from the e-mail I (finally) sent or from PHC's web site? Nancy King posted the time correctly, wish I had paid more attention to what she wrote. |
Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Carly Date: 01 May 05 - 09:20 PM We were at a fundraiser ( for S.O.M.E.- So Others Might Eat) and so missed most of the show. But I know what magic Elizabeth can do with a song, and I am delighted that the rest of the country got the chance to hear her too. Elizabeth has a gift of a voice and an understanding and love of what she sings that glows through every note, but I have to say that I would be happy to know her even if she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. Elizabeth LaPrelle is an intelligent, enthusiastic, sincere, and altogether pleasant person, and with the support of her great family I think she will be able to cope well with whatever life brings her. Congratulations, Elizabeth! Sandy and biglappy, you have done well! Carly Gewirz |

Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle on PHC April 30 From: Ferrara Date: 03 May 05 - 09:45 AM There was a really interesting comment in the PHC chat about the show, as follows: Loved every minute, but must say that, for us, Elizabeth LaPrelle stole the show. What a new talent! Her singing is right out of the Hebrides of western Scotland. Lived in that magical place for four years. She took us "home" to Scotland! Since I heard Sheila Kaye Adams sing I've noticed how many of the Appalachian stylistic components (such as the little "yip" at the end of a phrase) are also sometimes used by old time singers from the British Isles. I'm not familiar specifically with singing styles from the Hebrides though. |
