Oh, no! What a lovely man Cyril was! And he was such a talented, yet modest, composer. At least there are so many fine songs with which we can remember him!
The last time I saw him we had a friendly chat while he was unwinding after he had performed at Lancaster Maritime Festival. He was sitting on the stairs (there was no green room and all the chairs in the bar were occupied!) I said that I really enjoyed singing The Grey Funnel Line and he said that he had originally hoped to be able to accompany himself with an English concertina when singing it but he gave up learning the instrument. It is such a moving song anyway, so singing it now will bring extra tears to my eyes ...
Well at least he is now at rest ...

He was there in Leeds when I first became interested in the songs in 1964-5, at the Grove.
In October 2003, after, fervent negotiations he played our club in St Albans.
He arrived at the station at 3.00, checked into his hotel room , asked where the Cross keys was, and was rthere by 4.00
At 8.00pm He received a rapturous ovation as he walked! into the club room in Samuel Ryders old house.
At 11.00 he announced his closing song.
At midnight he concluded his encores
At 2.00 we retired from the bar to bed.
Now he has retired, thank you for the legacy.

I suppose it's true, but perhaps we shouldn't start an obituary thread until we get certain information. There's no news on his Website or on the BBC Website. We can also change the title of this thread, if and when it's appropriate. Perhaps that would be better than starting a new thread.

I had heard his name for years, and I'm so glad I was able to talk with him briefly and to hear him perform several times at Whitby Fowk Week a couple of years ago. His concert I liked best was the one he put on for the children and families. He had a mischievous twinkle in his eye, and the concert was lots of fun. He was a gracious man and a wonderful performer.

Hey, and he even had some nice things to say about Mudcat.

Sad news. There is a notice on Musical Traditions News page which states that Cyril passed away on 21 April - they also have no further information as yet.

Sadly I never got to see him perform live as far as I can recall, but I certainly used to sing a number of his songs in earlier years, and he has left an enduring legacy behind him.

The funeral is on Tuesday 3 May at 11am in Heavitree Exeter. No further information about arrangements yet. Cyril's website is maintained by Rosemary I think, so not surprisingly there is nothing there about this sad loss.

Derek is right - I have not yet had time to work on the website - was about to contact Mudcat when someone told me the news was out already. Funeral 3rd May 11 am at Heavitree Parish Church, Exeter.

I wish I could put real names and faces to all of you - I am glad that Cyril is at peace now, he would have had no quality of life had he lingered. I think he simply got tired and gave up.

I'm OK and am keeping busy, with masses of support from friends locally and worldwide

I am very sad to hear that. Sincere condolences to Cyril's family.

Cyril was indeed the first live folk artist I saw back in the late 60's at the Woodman Folkclub at Kingswinford near Dudley. I bought his LP and still wished I had it. One song from that LP that I still know almost by heart is "Rose in June" and is still a firm favourite of mine.

I had dreams of getting Cyril up to Market Rasen, but alas that can no longer be.

A Great Loss, a man that genuinely expressed, with great skill what it is and was like to be a sailor and to serve at sea, He wrote memorable songs with skill and humour that have been taken for traditional in many places, yet they have added to, and enhanced the Tradition at the same time with their fresness and style.

Very sorry to hear this news, and very grateful to have lived at the same time as Cyril and to have had the chance to hear him, and sing with him, so often.
   Many people connected with the English folk revival have written songs, some good, some bad, some indifferent, and it's not always given to mortal man to decide which is which. But I'll stick my neck out(and end up by agreeing with everybody else) and say Cyril was the boy, head and shoulders above all others. He wrote a considerable number of superlative songs, his output is unsurpassed. We all have favourites, but he wrote so many we'ld probably all have great difficulty in deciding which one is our extra-special favourite, he was just too good..
    A unique and wonderful songwriter; and a great singer of traditional songs, as well as his own.
    My thoughts are with Rosemary.

His handful of songs is a greater legacy, to me, than all the paper in a presidential library or the trust funds of a Rothschild. I have always thought of him as a mench, a real but quiet hero, because of the undertones of courage in his songs. I am sorry he is gone, and hope he finds exhilaration in his new state.

A great loss to us all. I first went to see Cyril Tawney at Chester a few years ago because I remembered he had been a favourite of my Dad in the sixties. I didn't know much about him then, but he did a CT in depth session where he talked about the songs he sang . His warmth, umanity and decency shone through.

Since then I have been to a lot of festivals and almost every good song about life at sea I enquired about turned out to be one of his.

There does not seem to me any doubt that Cril will always be with us.

I will always remember his kindness to Barbara (Dickson) and myself when we sang for the first time together at Dunfermline Howff in 1964. He was the guest artist that night and gave us young tearaways very gentle and sound advice on style and repertoire - advice that has stayed with me ever since. Judging by Barbara's new CD it stayed with her as well!

It is sure that we will not see his like again, neither will we ever forget him. His legacy is a world with more, and better, music than when he arrived on the scene.

I have never forgotten his appearance at my "Dog & Gun Folk Club, back in the seventies, when he came down off the stage, to sit right in the middle of the audience. It was the most involving and intimate musical event any of us had ever enjoyed.

God rest him and keep him, he's earned his repose.

All the people who've been touched by Cyril's voice and his songs will miss him sadly. Those of us who were privileged to know him personally will miss him even more.

In the music business it's only common sense to be nice to people who might be able to do you a favour someday. But Cyril was habitually nice to people from whom he could not expect to gain any advantage whatsoever, because that was just the way he was.

He made the world a brighter place for many of us while he was here. We will not forget him.

Cyril was a giant. Fabulous song-writer an a warm original singer.I did a floor spot at Cyril's club in Plymouth in 1967, and I had a nice chat with him. I had always wondered who were Cyril's musical inspirations - remembering that he was writing songs before any obvioiusly role-models were around. I was amazed when he cited pop singer Guy Mitchell's material as being the inspiration for a number of his, Cyril's, well-known compositions. Anyway, whatever the inspiration, Cyril's great songs will be with us for a very long time.

What sad news. Another tragic loss to swell this year's already hefty total.
Cyril was such a natural nice guy, so warm and approachable, so unassuming. I'm sure I'll find an excuse to sing a few of his fine songs in memory over this coming weekend, but there will never be a substitute for hearing them sung by Cyril himself, he'll really be missed.

My father often reminisced about his time at HMS Caledonia in the forties, remembering Cyril Tawney from there. I met him myself in a small folk club in Stoke on Trent, after witnessing a master class in how to hold an audience with a quiet, compelling personality. May he rest in well earned peace. I had the great good fortune to hear Cyril about 20 years ago when he came to Wash DC....his graciousness amd musicality shone thru even more in person.

He left us such a legacy. Many of his songs BECAME traditional during his life....not many can say that.

Another great one gone. Having loved many of his songs for years and been in awe of his recordings I finally had the honor and the pleasure of meeting him and talking with him for almost an hour in 2004 at Lancaster. He was most kind and it is a conversation I will never forget. He was a great man and I am a better person for having met him.

Words are so inadequate to describe such a loss, for Rosemary, for his personal friends and for the rest of us. I have enjoyed his music for years but never met him. Yet I feel the loss in my heart and in my soul. I hope St. Peter is ready to sing something other than hymms for a while.

I should have posted on this thread sooner but it's not easy to work out what to say on such a sad occasion.

I'd known Cyril for at least 40 years - I was involved in a benefit gig for him in the 60s when he was (wrongly as it turned out) diagnosed as having Parkinson's Disease. Besides being a beautifully relaxed singer, he was one of the best song writers that the folk revival produced. At one time he was writing a new song every week for his radio program. He was also a wonderful friend who it was a great pleasure to bump into from time to time.

Whether you're bound for Fiddler's Green, Six Feet of Mud, The Siding, or taking the tideway to your burying ground, our thoughts are all with you - and Rosemary of course. In one way you'll never really be gone - I don't think I've ever been to a good session without hearing plenty of your songs and I can't imagine that changing.

As Tom Lewis said "Cyril said it all before".

His songs had very special meaning for me as he was a man of the navy and wrote many brilliant song about the navy which I could relate to.

I too was a tiffy and a submariner and I often catch myself singing "Lean and unwashed tiffy". I will sing it more often in memory.

I hope the RNBT Rep' at the Pearly Gates is waiting to open them for him.

Very sad news indeed.

Bought a copy of Cyril's first LP when it came out. It was a breath of fresh air. Met him at our folk club in New York's Eagle Tavern about 20 or 25 years ago. Thought he sang well then, but he blew me away with a gorgeous set of songs at the Lancaster festival 3 or 4 years ago. Amazingly to me, Cyril remembered the night in NYC: "Big fish and free beer!" He said it was the only time while doing a gig he had ever had unlimited free beer courtesy of the pub and, of course, there were those stuffed sailfish and dolphins on the wall!

Here's to you Cyril! You gave me great pleasure many times and sadness only once. You will have free beer all the time now.

Cyril Tawney made an impact in every obscure corner of the world: his songs made it to "Rise up Singing" afterall ...

I have run into modern RN types (in the middle of landlocked Macedonia/FYROM no less) who immediately related to the titles of Cyril's works -- maybe a West Country connection -- ("Five Foot Flirt", "Diesel and Shale", "Oggy Man") but did not know of Cyril the man or of folk music. His songs resonate and tonight they'll reverberate at a typically modern German venue (O'Reilly's) in Stuttgart ...

Meanwhile, the words of The Boarding Party come to mind, "When my time is over, haul away to heaven, God be by my side ..."

We have lost a significant member of the folk heritage, a wonderful songwriter, brilliant performer and gracious gentleman of the old school.

I have fond memories of Cyril, who was one of my inspirations to emerge from the audience and become a semi-professional singer from the mid-sixties to the end of the seventies.

I was also priviledged enough to visit you and Cyril, Rosemary, in Plymouth together with Rod Stradling at the end of the sixties.

I was sad to hear of his latest illness, as I too have been diabetic for the last ten years or so.

I think he's taken the tidewave.

A great loss. No doubt there are lots of stories associated with Him, but our best memories are of him heading the line up at the now long gone Whitchurch Festival in Hampshire. He was a Hampshire man, and regailed us throughout that weekend with his reminisces of his early days in the county, including the tale of the bike ride to Whitchurch.
Thankfully his songs will live on so long as there are people to sing them.

I just came back today from a folk festival, where I was asked at two different sessions to sing "Grey Funnel Line". Both times it went over really well - but I don't think any of us knew he had died - I certainly didn't.

What a great loss to the folk community this is! I'm sure we'll be singing his songs for a long time.

In his Cyril Tawney obituary in theGuardian today, Derek Schofield repeats the story that Bob Dylan recorded "Sally Free and Easy". I started a thread on this subject on Mudcat a couple of years ago: I have persistently heard rumours that Dylan was influenced by Cyril Tawney on his vist to England to record "Mad House in Castle Street" in 1962. On that Mudact thread, nobody could confirm the exiatence of that recording(by repute, a bootleg of Dylan singing it at some session in London). Now Derek Schofield has repeated the story, can anybody tell us if this recording (a) exists and (b) is available somewhere? This seems a very interesting question, as it suggests England's greatest songwriter from the folk revival influenced America's ditto at a very young age.

Kevin Sheils on 29 April 2004 in the Cyril Tawney/Bob Dylan page gave the details. From my Bob Dylan fan contacts, I had this, "it`s part of the columbia studio sessions Aug/Oct 1963, played on piano". Cyril himself refers to Dylan recording the song on the notes to Navy Cuts CD.
The Guardian heavily edited the obituary I'm afraid.

I have been listening to Cyril since the early seventies. Now
I am involved with the Howth Singing Circle in Dublin and I have
sung many of Cyril's songs - particularly his children's songs.

I am very sad that he has died - I will sing a song in his memory
at our session tomorrow.

Cyril was a thread through my singing life too, hearing Adge Cutler and the Wurzels rendition of Five Foot Flirt, singing Sally Free and Easy on caving trips in the back of a transit, The Young Traditions' Chicken on a Raft, and right now arranging Sally's Bar as a duet.

The Shiny Bum Singers did a parody of Grey Funnel Line (The Old IBM) in our first performance at the (Australian) National Folk Festival in 1999, following which I appeared in the famous 'stairwell' late night session in my performing business suit, to be greeted with verse after verse of extemporisation to 'Grey Flannel Suit'!

How wide the ripples roll, how much fun he inspired, what wonderful songs he wrote. I await with interest his wry commentary on heaven.

BBC Radio 5 Live's obituary programme, Brief Lives, is including a tribute to Cyril Tawney in this week's programme. Broadcast on Sunday 8 May at 6am, repeated at 7pm. Radio 5 is not a digital channel – it's on MW 693 or 909.

Doors open 7:45pm for a start of 8:15pm until 11:00 - 11:15pm

The evening will have a Cyril Tawny feel to it, but that does not mean that all the songs will be from songs written by Cyril.

I look forward to seeing lots of support for this event and will update information as we get near to the evening.

Anyone go to the funeral? I believe there were lots of folkies there.
I heard that Lou Killen sang Grey Funnel Line as the casket was leaving and everyone stopped and joined in.
Wish we could have been there.
