Well, since that old thread that Joe points to, I have come across yet another version done by Frank Stokes in Memphis in the mid-20s

There were a number of folk versions recorded around the time of Bessie Smith's classic blues version. It would be interesting to know whether the folk versions evolved from her song or if hers is a formalized version of an older song.
