Subject: The Legend of The Rebel Soldier
From: bo
Date: 13 Dec 98 - 10:29 AM

This is intended as a list of little things people notice. I dont think its high priority but if you see an error, ommission, missed attribution in the data base I invite you to list them here.

Save folks the trouble of looking for them.

I suggest simple statements of the problem (shorter than this first one :) ) with the name of the song in the subject.

" The Legend of the Rebel Soldier " is entered in the DB twice with almost identical notes.

In DT the file ANCREON is evidently the first posting from JB, then notes were expanded for ANACRON2, but they're both the same otherwise.

HABENBOO and DICKDAR3 are the same, erase the latter.

Unless there's another WBO, some songs are credited incorrectly. HUSHCRON, HUSHBY, HUSHBIRD, GDNEWYR, RANOGATE are credited to WBO, but I think they are from MS. Several other songs credited to WBO didn't come from me. I supplied a note to "The Roast Beef of Old England", but not the song, which is from a book I've never seen.

COLLYCW1, COLLYCW2, and COLLYCW3, are successive parts of the same song.

DIGBY is in twice on my disk copy of DT.

Many Thanx! Probably won't get fixed until the Spring release, but much appreciated nontheless.

Thanks in advance for your promised attention to "He's Gone Away"!

Just pick a song in the DT (in English, French, or Spanish) and I'll correct the typos in it. Okay, I'm exaggerating--there probably are a few songs without typos. I realize the difficulty of proofreading almost 10,000 of them.

Actually I don't see that Dick need do all the proofreading. We can point out the errors as we find them. What do you think, Dick? If you agree, what mechanism would you prefer--email? forum thread?

Murray

Actually, I was just trying to say that I didn't blame the DT folks for all the typos.

HOWEVER, I would like to mention that I've e-mailed some corrections to Dick, and several releases have gone by without those corrections appearing. Not to complain (much). So I too would like to know a better way.

Yes, Jerry I found the same, and knowing how time consuming proof reading / correction is, raised the same question / offer previously. I would be more than glad to help, but if you would rather we just shut up and left you to get on with it Dick, please say so.

Subject: RE: Administrivia/new threads

Seasoned Mudcat contributors often scold newcomers for asking for songs which are already in the database. I suggest that a fairly short notice could come up on the screen whenever anyone clicks the "create a new thread" box.
Is a new thread the best way to find the information you seek? If you are looking for lyrics to a particular song, do try to locate it in the database first. It is also worth trying to locate previous threads on the song by doing a forum search. If you find an appropriate thread, you can make it current by adding your own comment to it. If you don't find anything useful after a short search, then by all means start a new thread and we'll be glad to help you.
Thread titles [suggest that key words of songs or topic should be included in the name of the thread and suggest a few standard forms along the lines of "Lyrics added", "DT correction", "song request" ]
Such a notice would help to streamline the forum a bit; there would still be plenty of conversation going on. Of course, looking for a song and not finding it doesn't always mean it isn't there. Respondents to threads will still have to do their own searches when we know different words or spellings to look up. But we won't have to spend typing time scolding inquirers for not having done their own research before making the query; we can assume they did try!

Yes, Philippa, that would be great (in combination with an effectively positioned HELP-system telling the newbies (and us) how to do a search).
However, with more urgent problems at hand (see Mudcat will be fixed thread, e.g.), all of us are just glad that Mudcat works at all. But when that's fixed for sure, I'd really appreciate a help system that makes the thread titeling more transparent.

Wolfgang

How come your computer does that, Dick? Once you fix that, can you get mine to stop spelling words wrong?

Joe, you just need to get a Wiccan to cast you a "checker" spell.

Hi- My truncated messgaes seem to stem from the fact that I send them from my office machine (lunchtime, you know) and it's a Mac that apparently reciprocates my feelings towards it. I don't seem to have this problem with my PC at home.

BTW, in re Macs: For some verdammte reason, the new Mac operating system (OS8.2) won't run our Mac version; it's being worked on, and that's why we don't have a fall 98 Mac version available. Sorry about that.

In case you haven't come across it in other threads and in the help column, those of us who use accents and umlauts and so on are disturbed to see that lyrics which previously looked right have mutated. I hope you can quite quickly readjust the system so that it will display these letters correctly.
