I was curious if any others on this site have heard this CD and have a response to it. It seems like a beat poet version of Sgt. Pepper's, only better realized and with a lot more content.
I thank this site for my initial exposure to Tom Russel. People were raving about The Man From God Knows Where a few years ago when it came out. Since then I've been a big fan.
This new release is like nothing else I've heard before.
Bill

Bill
I haven't heard it yet, but it is getting rave reviews from those like yourself who have. I am a big TR fan and can't wait to get my copy. If you like TR check out Eric Taylor, also a fine singer/songwriter.
Ron

We had an earlier thread on this CD by Tom Russell and they wern't very many comments......I sometimes wonder if Tom has put out this work of art and people are afraid of it....It sounds rather harsh, but I feel the need to say this........"Contemporay Folk Music" seems to be a tad bit afraid of facing some issues.......there are some who still do, Jim Page and others....But the core of Folk Singers don't appear to want to get involved......I have had some very good artists in Toledo for concerts and they all shy away from issues and sing the safe music....Oh well there it is ...my two cents.........Frank of Toledo

Tom is a genius.
This c.d contains recordings he has
collected from voices of people
he must have been gathering for
many years...many of whom are gone now.
People who have been influential in his
life and many others'....including Little
Jack Horton, Charles Bukowski, Lenny Bruce,
Jack Kerouac, Edward Abbey , Ramblin' Jack
Elliot--it sounds like a reunion of
beatniks, hipsters, and others riding
the crest of the cultural wave of mid-
century americana.

In one case Tom sent a tape recorder to
one of the folks and asked them to talk
into it. Such dedication to archive the
moment! We should take inspiration from
him and make a similar effort to save
cultural gems from our lives!
Like John Lomax, the Song catcher, and
others...to preserve the sounds, ideas,
etc. for posterity, for prosperity..for
----heck, just do it!

Tom's opening for Prine on the West Coast, and Leon Redbone is opening on the East Coast - who's opening in the Land of the Windchill Factor?

just to keep on topic --If someone is just getting into Tom's work, I suggest starting with the duet cd - at least, it's my favorite.

Chris

About the duet c.d. -- Tom Russell's? I am not sure which one you mean.
John Prine did a duet c.d. called In Spite of Ourselves.
