I heard this song years ago and learned it, but now can't remember anything else about it. Does anyone recognise it, know who sang it, know when it was written, etc.

The first verse is:

(Well) I can't find a house in the country,
Nor I can't find a house in the town
But I have my horse and my wagon
And I'll travel the country around."

It's recorded on The Albion Band's 'Rise up Like the Sun' and written by John Tams.

Voila For future reference, there's a huge database of stuff on this site. If you tap a title or even a fragment of a song into the 'Lyrics and Knowledge Search' at the top of the page, nine times out of ten it'll throw up what you're looking for!

Cheers

Chris :-)

Georgina - I followed the link suggested by Chris, and found this information, which disagrees with your message:

Hi Lamarca, The (English) Folk Music Journal for 1975 is devoted to 'Music of the Travelling People' and on page 50 there's a song written by Maggie Stewart, once of Aberdeen then of Montrose. Here it is:
I CAN'T GET A HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY   etc.

I'm now confused. When do you believe John Tams wrote it? Is the EFDSS article incorrect? Did Maggie Stewart simply sing it, as written by Tams?

Help!

Might be worth having a squiz at this thread. I've got the "Rise Up Like The Sun" album, (well worth getting, by the way!) but I don't seem to remember John Tams having the writing credit for this song on it. I'll dig it out tomorrow and have a look!

The song is Maggie Stewart's. The Albion recording is credited "Stewart, arr. the Albion Band".
