I have just come back from The Elm Tree Public House in 1 Long St Devizes Wiltshire. The landlord who loves Real Ale and people who drink it, is also intrested in having some folk music at the pub as well. If any one is near the area, and would like to run a session or singaround or Folk Club there, he would love to hear from you. It's not everyday we get lovely real ale and a landlord and landlady who love folk music as well. Please place your message on here, or contact him direct at the pub. Cheers. MFB

I must say, the chips at "The Elm Tree" won my chips of the Champions League award. They are crisp on the outside hot and fluffy on the inside and big and chunky. Perfect.

Wonderful to know that Devizes has a(nother) folk friendly landlord. The one at The Lamb is very folk friendly - and that's where the folk club meets every Monday except Bank Holidays. Check out the Wiltshire Folk Arts website for Wiltshire Traditions Folk Club.

Hey cheers Polly, I did not know that. Perhaps someone who goes there could pop in and see Steve. Could run a monthly singaround or session, or even get some Morris Men down there once in a while. The more outlets the better for folk.Just in case anyone is wondering I would love to organize it all, but I live in Luton (Champions) Town. Which is three hours away.

That's how they spelt it on the telly, I am sure it's should be Darlek. Exterminate Exterminate. Etc Etc. I am off to watch the rest of the snooker. If you are not watching it, go and watch it now, it's very good.

Wouldn't it be easier to organise a mini folk holiday in Bedfordshire

I saw the snooker - it was very good - English beat the Welsh again

A bit porky though - I'm surprised he finds enough time to practice in between meals

Evidently the Daleks mutated from a race called the Kaled and that's the pun

It is spelled Dalek - a corruption of the name of the race who spawned them, the Kaleds. Watch 'Genesis of the Daleks', the one with Davros, that explains it all.

Martin, the local morris side is Moonraker Morris - I think they're still dancing. Otherwise local side is Chippenham Town Morris. I know that a cotswold side from Westminster were visiting on an annual basis until quite recently, I assume they still do. Could be worth contacting those sides to arrange a tour.

Apart from being the home of the famous Wadworth 6X Brewery, Devizes is also known in folklore as the place where the Wiltshire Moonrakers first got their name. A group of smugglers were supposedly using rakes to get their barrels out of the Cramer (large ornate duckpond in the centre of town) when along came the excise man. When asked what they were doing they replied they were trying to rake the cheese out of the water - the cheese being the reflection of the full moon in the pond. Hence, Wiltshire people have been labelled ever since with being rather stupid. Seems like they should be labelled as liking a good tipple - what with barrels of brandy and now our excellent 6X! Come to think of it, not a bad theme for a song - watch this space.

Hi from the Wiltshire Traditions Folk Club in Devizes!
We have run the folk club there for a few years and many more prior to that in Potterne and very well supported it is too.
The club at the Lamb Inn (approximately 100 yards away from the Elm Tree) runs every Monday except bank holidays and all of August.
Check out the website of wiltshirefolkarts.org.uk and see who's coming up. Next guest coming is the superb Bob Fox on the 16th May
i'll pop in and see the landlord of the elm tree next time i'm passing to have a chat about Folk in devizes and see what would be good or not.
Love to see you all here in lovely Devizes
JesterBob

The Wiltshire Traditions Club is a super place to sing - they really hit the spot with their chorus singing! We had a great time when we performed there some weeks ago. I recommend it to everyone who can get there. The resident singers are excellent ( particularly Bob & Gill Berry) and they have a singer of music hall songs there who beats anyone I have ever heard.
And the beer's good too!

Why thank you Mary for the nice comments.
Just to say that the great music hall singer is the one and only Ron Harries. We are hoping to put together a recording sometime soon of rons renditions and we think that it will be a very popular album. Ron has just the right delivery to perform the likes of gus Elan and many others including one from the writing of one Dave sealey no less.
Keep an eye open for this sometime in the near future
Bob

Cheers Bob and Sally and Mary of course (See you Soon) Bob if you could pop in to see Steve that would be great. It seems to me he might like a once a month Singaround/Session type of thing and some morris men, if you can arange it. You seem like the sort of chap who could. The 6 XXXXXX and Henrys IPA is out of this world, I have only just started drinking again (Wednesday Night) since Saturday, it was so yummy. If we come down for a Holiday I will let you know and see if we can get together. Cheesrs for your help. MFB. And Polly it dose indeed seem like a good idea for a song. We might have two songs out of this then, see you soon I hope, Cheers, MFB.

Such a great building, it is listed very old and is only £25 per person per night (Two people sharing), this along with LOVELY 6 XXXXXX and Henry's IPA Ale, food from old recipes, roaring fires (When Needed) plus Shire Horse Country, right by the canal side, has its own theatre, mad landlord and land lady, why not give yourselves a well earned cheap, short break, a mere three hours drive from the LOVELY M25. Oh Go on. You know you want to. Who knows might even have it's own Folk Music soon as well.

By the way, the folk club in the Lamb is very friendly and welcoming, we had a wonderful evening there on Monday night, and would reccomend it. Tahnks Jester Bob and all for a great evening! For eating in Devizes, We found the Black Swan food excellent and the Raven at Poulshot on the outskirts good too, with ale from the wood (6X of course) an added bonus. We also went to The George at Bradford on Avon (Wooley) for a sing around on Tuesday and were made very welcome by the people there, thank you for making my birthday so enjoyable! The Grapes in Bradford On Avon is also excellent for food!!!

He said that because The Lamb is only across the road and does not won't too tread on anyones toes, but if people are willing to start something up there once a month maybe on a different day to The Lamb, he will be intrested if he is aproched by someone first. Any ideas? Morris Men, Singaround/Session. Great Olde Wolde Pub, lovely people, lovely Ale, all it needs now is some lovely Music.
