Subject: Songs for volunteer appreciation party?
From: GUEST,Marion
Date: 10 May 05 - 05:16 PM

Hi gang. I'm going to be playing for a volunteer appreciation night at a nursing home - the audience will be the volunteers, not the residents. Mostly I'll play a general mix of popular songs, but it would be good to include a few things on topic - any suggestions?

Thanks, Marion

Thanks, Marion

Woody Guthrie did something to the tune of "The Butcher Boy" called "The Ladies Auxillary" for such an occasion--my recollection is that it went:

Oh, the Ladies' Auxillary
Is a fine Auxillary
It's the best Auxillary
That you ever did see
If you need an Auxillary
That's the best Auxillary
Get the Ladies Auxillary
Auxillary

In a pinch, I have used the same idea(and the same melody) and squeezed all sorts of names in--

Sidewinder--What on God's Green Earth does that song have to do with volunteer appreciation? Or any kind of appreciation? It makes "Achie Brakey Heart" sound good--

The one I know is "Let's hear it for the volunteers", but, sorry,
I don't have the music.

you know the old spiritual

Where you there when crucified my Lord

You easily rewrite

You were there when.... whatever happened did happen

Perhaps - if you are struggling - a song (as a joke) which praised all the attributes of those who did not volunteer to help others - would hit the right note?

We're alright Jack

We're alright Jack, so don't bother us
It may affect us too, if you go kicking up a fuss
I can see you are wounded
Not in the best of health
But we all agree, you must have brought it on yourself

Am I not entitled, just like all of you
To speak from what I see, my personal point of view?
I'll question those who try to get the problem solved
And criticise those who would get me involved

We're alright Jack, so don't bother us
It may affect us too, if you go kicking up a fuss
I can see you are wounded
Not in the best of health
But we all agree, you must have brought it on yourself

These fears of mugging are simply overblown
Didn't get raped, when I went out alone
Ignore the statistics, ignore the traumatised
In my opinion, its over dramatised

We're alright Jack, so don't bother us
It may affect us too, if you go kicking up a fuss
I can see you are wounded
Not in the best of health
But we all agree, you must have brought it on yourself

The victims of this crime may not think I am right
Many now, if able, would not go out at night
My support may give some consolation
I'll leave them in their lonely isolation

We're alright Jack, so don't bother us
It may affect us too, if you go kicking up a fuss
I can see you are wounded
Not in the best of health
But we all agree, you must have brought it on yourself

The song, "Let's Hear It for the Volunteers" is one of my favorites. Mustard's Retreat does it and has recorded it. We had Mustard's Retreat do it at the evening concert of a recent folk festival as our thank you to all our volunteers.

Just a popular, cheerful number to get the folks going -nothing more, nothing less. Maybe you don't know much about entertaining M.Ted.Put a smile on the face and a chorus on the lips and you're on your way to a successful show -believe me I know.

Regards.

The Newfoundland song Tickle Cove Pond is about neighbours helping neighbours--You can always rely on the Holfords and Whites/To render assistance in all your bad plights. Lyrics, score, and MIDIs available at GEST's site

Don't know much about anything, Sidewinder, but I can read-- Marion asked for "a few songs "on topic" the topic being volunteers.

Now you just go back to putting smiles on people's faces--and don't pay me any mind--

Depending on how long you have, go onto the web site of Mustards Retreat. They do a very good song that would go down well called Lets Hear it for the Volunteers.

They did it to wind up our festival and it went down a treat

all the best   John

The Volunteer Song
Written by Paul Horrisberger, an outstanding volunteer coordinator and musician, with Dick Kimmel. The message is wonderful and so is the song, reprinted here with permission. © 1985

Get involved in your community,
Help to make a better way
The pay is great for giving freely,
Solve the problems of today

Volunteer for your community,
Volunteer it feels fine.
Help create a bright tomorrow.
Give some money or your time.

Volunteers can feed the hungry,
Help the lonely find the way
Volunteers can make the difference,
Solve the problems of today.

Give yourself a new beginning
Take a chance and you will find
Volunteering is like getting,
A brand new state of mind.

There's No People Like Volunteers
Sung to the tune "There's No People Like Show People"

There's no people like volunteers like no people we know.
Everything about them is appealing.
Everything the limit will allow.
No where can you get that happy feeling
when they are with us like now.

There's no people like volunteers we smile when they are near.
And we are here to say they really save the day
And what they do is worth more than their pay.
And anyone of them would always come through when there's a job to do.
We thank you so much.

We Sing for Volunteers

We sing for volunteers that's true.
And that is why we sing for you.
The good news is we sing for free.
The bad news is we sing off key.

Sound off...Thank you
Sound off...Volunteers
Thank you, thank you, Volunteers

Love In Action
copyright 2000 Tammy Joseph

Do you think you can make a difference by what you do?
It's true, it takes only one act of kindness for the wheel to move

Love in Action starts a chain reaction
That power is in you, yeah
Love in Action starts a chain reaction
As you give to others, you give to you

Bridge:And the walls of resistance tumble down
Fear and anger have no ground
when the power of love and kindness comes 'round
So, do you think you can make a difference by what you do?
It's true, the joy of giving and receiving will take away the blues

Let's Hear It For the Volunteers
Written by David Tamulevich and Michael Hough
Performed by Mustard's Retreat

Jenny is a baker and she works all night.
She smiles like an angel on her mountain bike.
She made the cookies and they taste just right.
Jenny is a volunteer.

They open up the hall in the afternoon.
They help performers to stay in tune.
They'll be cleaning up by the light of the moon
Let's hear it for the volunteers!

And it's one, two, three, hey!
Help them put the chairs away.
If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be here.
Let's hear it for the volunteers.

Kathy is the one in the yellow pants
She loves the music, but she can't dance,
But with her computer now she writes grants.
Let's hear it for the volunteers!

There goes Spike, he's seen it all.
But he's the one who let the curtain fall.
I was changing clothes, and I mooned you all
Let's hear it for the volunteers!

Chorus

Then there's Andy, he works the sound.
Thunderstorm's coming, and he looks around.
He's all patched in, but he's just lost his ground.
Let's hear it for the volunteers!

It ain't for money, 'cause they work for free.
We're a great dysfunctional family.
It's all for the music and the company
Let's hear it for the volunteers

Good work, George!

Si Kahn has composed a few including "People Like You Make People Like Me Go On."

Bob Zentz has "Bring Back the Days" and several others.

But probably this special event has already happened. How did it go?

Another appropriate Si Kahn song is "What You Do with What You've Got" (lyrics here).

So, Marion... How did it go?

Thanks for your suggestions everybody.

I used a song that occurred to me after starting this thread: All the Good People (lyrics in this thread). It's not about volunteers per se, but it's a tribute to how people enrich other people's lives.
