Hard Tack, Come Again No More Hard tack, come again no more Let us close our game of poker, take our tin cups in our hand As we all stand by the cook's tent door As dried monies of hard crackers are handed to each man. O, hard tack, come again no more! CHORUS: 'Tis the song, the sigh of the hungry: "Hard tack, hard tack, come again no more." Many days you have lingered upon our stomachs sore. O, hard tack, come again no more! 'Tis a hungry, thirsty soldier who wears his life away In torn clothes--his better days are o'er. And he's sighing now for whiskey in a voice as dry as hay, "O, hard tack, come again no more!"--CHORUS 'Tis the wail that is heard in camp both night and day, 'Tis the murmur that's mingled with each snore. 'Tis the sighing of the soul for spring chickens far away, "O, hard tack, come again no more!"--CHORUS But to all these cries and murmurs, there comes a sudden hush As frail forms are fainting by the door, For they feed us now on horse feed that the cooks call mush! O, hard tack, come again once more! FINAL CHORUS: 'Tis the dying wail of the starving: "O, hard tack, hard tack, come again once more!" You were old and very wormy, but we pass your failings o'er. O, hard tack, come again once more! |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE VOLUNTEER ^^ From: John in Brisbane Date: 15 Dec 98 - 02:49 AM THE VOLUNTEER [or IT IS MY COUNTRY'S CALL] By Harry Macarthy (d. 1874) I leave my home and thee, dear, With sorrow in my heart, It is my contry's call, dear, To aid her I depart; And on the blood-red battle plain We'll conquer or we'll die, T'is for our honor and our name, We raise the battle cry. CHORUS: Then weep not, dearest, weep not, If in her cause I fall, O, weep not dearest, weep not, It is my country's call. And yet my heart is sore, love, To see thee weeping thus; But mark me, there's no fear, love, For in Heaven is our trust. And if the heavy, drooping tear Swells in my mournful eye, It is that Northmen of our land Should cause the battle cry. CHORUS Our rights have been usurped, dear, By Northmen of our land, Fanatics raised the cry, dear, Politicians fired the brand. The Southrons spurn the galling yoke, The tyrant;s threats defy. They find we've sons like sturdy oak To raise the battle cry. CHORUS I knew you'd let me go, pet, I saw it in that tear, To join the gallant men, pet, Who never yet knew fear. With Beauregard and Davis, We'll gain our cause or die, Win battles like Manassas And raise our battle cry. CHORUS Harry Macarthy was an English-born vaudeville entertainer who emigrated to the United States and settled in Arkansas. Billing himself the "Arkansas Comedian," he traveled widely throughout the South in company with his wife, putting on "personation concerts." These performances featured Macarthy singing in the dialect of other cultures, dancing to ethnic-sounding music, and dressing in flamboyant costumes. Stephen Currie, writing in Music in the Civil War, reports that one of Macarthy's traveling companions was a cockatoo that had been trained to squawk "Three cheers for Jeff Davis!" on stage. Although some claim that Macarthy was more interested in attracting audiences and making money than he was in supporting the Southern cause, he was nevertheless responsible for the second most popular song in the Confederacy -- "The Bonnie Blue Flag" -- which he premiered in Jackson, Mississippi, in the spring of 1861. |
