Sad to report that bluegrass singer/guitarist Jimmy Martin died this morning of complications relating to his long fight with bladder cancer.

Not unexpected but sad nonetheless. Jimmy Martin brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.

Two of the best songs I remember by Jimmy were his renditions of:

Shenandoah Valley of Virginia

20-20 Vision (and Walking 'Round Blind)

He was also a prick. I don't know anyone who liked him as a person.

Sad news--strange thing is that I heard a wonderful program of his best stuff a week or so back on the local radio station--love him or hate him(unfortunately, he was not known for being a nice man) he was always one of the central performers in bluegrass--he created a lot of great music over the years--

Based on some of his music, he had a great sense of humor. We are the poorer without him.

Yeah, this guy was an original. I have heard the stories that he was a mean son of a bitch with a vocabulary that would make a trucker proud. But that's OK. His heart was in his music and he was his own man.

He was one of a kind, his Freeborn Man was one of the songs that first got me interested in Bluegrass. He will be missed.

He was the best. I used to call him the father of kick-ass bluegrass. Not for Jimmy bluegrass as chamber music. That driving, bouncing sound -- and Jimmy used to bounce when he sang, too -- said "get up out of that chair, come on out of the kitchen, this is entertainment, dance music! Pour another glass of 'sheep-dip' and have a good time."

Jimmy was the definition of what bluegrass should be. If you can't sit still when you hear it, it's right. I have Milwaukee, Here I Come on this laptop, and it's bangy and clangy and overrecorded, but every time I play it, my heart starts racing and I have to boogie-woogie in my chair.

He was one of my greatest musical heroes and still is. Adieu, Jimmy Martin.
