Jayne and I are anxously awaiting the arrival of Jerry and Ruth for a visit. They have been in Atlanta attending a wedding and are now on their way up to Dalton to visit for a couple days in the area. We are going to do a little sightseeing thie afternoon, cook steaks on the grill and then my folk group, The Brookwoods will assemble in the early evening for a music session. We are really excited to entertain them. I will report how the visit progresses and post some photos later. Wish you North Americans were here! ( I imagnine most of the English are suffering hangovers righ now from the big MiccaKhattfest!)

OM, I still have a reel-to-reel. Course, you're likely too young to remember that. Goes at 7 1/2" per second.

Student the other day had this doo-dad hanging from his neck. I asked what it was. He told me it's a thingy to plug into the back of a computer and it will store the information that can be held on about 150 floppy disks. The thing is the size of a small Bic lighter. Jaysus.

Please understand that doo-dad and thingy are technical terms to me. Really.

Jimmy, ya gotta record that. PLEASE. Jerry is one great singer/performer, and I would love to hear you, too. PLEASE, and we'll arrange to put sugar on your thong, OK?

Say hello from me, too. I'm back from the Handfasting, and relatively sane. Well, as sane as I ever was anyway.

This isn't much of a stay-at-home weekend for 'catters, is it? We're bouncing around like a sack of ping-pong balls.

"We're bouncing around like a sack of ping-pong balls."

Day of yore. The King sent his knights off to collect ping-pong balls from around the kingdom. The knigh who brought back the msot withing three months would win the hand (and presumably the rest) of his Daughter, the fair Zelda.

After three months the first knight returned and dumped the sack. There were 4,329. Shortly after, the second knight returned. He dumped out 5,427. As midnight neared, there was no sign of the third knight. Seconds ticked by and as the stroke of midnight was about to tick (I know there were no clocks; it's an anachronism), in came knight number three, tattered, torn and bleeding. He dumped the contents of the sack. Two came out. The king was shocked. He said in his most realmly and regal voice, "Knights one and two have returned with thousands. YOU, varlet, have returned with two ping-pong balls. Surely you jest." The third knight broke into tears and said, "PING-PONG BALLS. Hell, I thought you said KING-KONG BALLS!"

11pm Sunday night. Great Session here at Casa de jimmyt! Brookwoods would do a song, Jerry would do a song, then a young man named Greg Duke, local singer-songwriter would do a song! What terrific music we had. We talked Mudcat all day, had a terrific trip to Chattanooga, where Jerry and Ruth took us out to lunch and we did all the tourist stuff. Had steaks on the grill tonight, then music, then Jayne made a cake with whipped cream malt icing.   Ruth and Jerry are great houseguests and I hate their visit has to be so short. Jayne and I are already planning a trip up to Derby Connecticut soon to see them again. You know, I think if I was exposed to Jerry more, why I might even turn Liberal! grin jimmyt

No Brucie, I did not kiss him
Yes, Laurel, I will send along the recipe to Liz. It is a pretty fine icing and fairly straightforward to fix. In fact, I have a few more recipes of mine I will send. Good for people to expand your horizons and eat some Conservative dishes! grin jimmyt

Jerry and Ruth just left this AM and we only wish we had more time to talk and play and eat. His music is great and from the heart and in addition to being such a suuperb musician, he is a great human being. I introduced him to my group as my best friend I had never met before and I think that really applies. It is quite amazing how well we get to know folks here on Mudcat so that when you actually meet in the flest it is pretty seamless, you just go on from where you left off online! Well, I have to get busy at work

I am sure that the two of you and all the others there had a really wonderful time. I know that I wish that I could have been there with you all. Jerry and Ruth are two very special people and like you said about them being "best friends never met" that is how I felt when I met them when over with the Shellbacks.
Like many others this side of the pond I was in London celebrating with Micca and Khatt, just arrived home safely, somehow I managed to stay reasonably sober for the festivities.
Love to you all
Col

Home again home again, jiggety jig.

Got home after midnight last night, and finally got rolling this morning. If this is rolling.

Gotta tell ya. Ruth and I haven't stopped talking about our visit with Jimmy and Jayne since we drove out of their driveway. We both agree that they are rare, rare people. We only had one day in Dalton, but it was great. When we met Jimmy and Jayne we both immediately knew that they were people you feel truly blessed to know. If you meet two or three couples like them in your lifetime, consider yourself greatly blessed. We've never had a more joyful reunion with two people we'd never met.

As I told jimmy, he undersells the group he sings with as basically a Kingston Trio and 60's cover band. Sitting in the kitchen and listening to them. They are much more more than that, and do a wide range of music, including contemporary songwriters and some gospel. All four of the guys are fine musicians and singers, and I really like it that there is no "lead" singer in the group. Each member sings lead on one song or another. It was great fun, singing along with them. And Jayne is the frosting on the cake. She is a great singer, and her love for singing just radiates in her face. Jimmy is great fun, too. As you might suspect, he has a flair for comedy, and when he sings, he just makes you feel good.

Sunday, they took us up to Chatanooga and showed us the sights... including the Chatanooga Choo Choo. If we'd had more time, maybe we could have met the Chatanooga Shoe Shine Boy.

And cooks? The dinner they prepared for us you couldn't get in the finest restaurant in the country. Makes me think we'd better re-think making lasagna or black bean and sausage stew when they come here. The only thing that was missing was the Maitre Dee (sp?) and the check at the end of the meal. I won't say more about the meal for fear that half of the Mudcatters descend upon them.

Most of all, Jimmy and Jayne are just a pleasure to spend time with.
We wish they weren't so far away.

Jerry and Ruth

I was certain that Jerry's experience at jimmyt's would be every bit as wonderful as my own was just a little less than a year ago. Jimmy and Jayne are two of the most remarkably friendly people I have ever met. Their hospitality is without equal. Their talents are extraordinary.

As Jerry pointed out, Jimmy's group is quite an experience to hear. (Jimmy, by the way, is every bit as accomplished in vocal harmony as he is with the stand-up bass.) Who would have thought that the kitchen would have such great acoustics? Each of the members of the group is a treat to hear; but to hear all of them at once is purely a marvel! The KT3 has nothing on them!

I can't agree more that Jayne is the icing on the cake. Her lovely voice pairs beautifully with her obvious love for singing.

I have yet to hear Jerry in person, but from all of the recordings I have heard I am convinced that the harmonies he and the others created in Jimmy's kitchen would have been well worth hearing. (I don't suppose anyone thought to record any of it? No, I thought not. What a shame!)

I hope jimmyt and Jayne will make it to a Getaway someday so that more folks can meet these fine folks and hear their music.
