Subject: Lyr Req: I Wait For A Ship (Marie Galante/Weill) From: Blackcatter Date: 18 May 05 - 07:49 AM Hi all, Looking for the lyrics to J'Attends un Navire, from the musical play Marie Galante. English title: I Wait For A Ship. Music by Kurt Weill with French lyrics by Jacques Boularan. Composed somewhere near 1934. I appreciate the help - so few of these types of lyrics are available in the Net. Blackcatter |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Wait For A Ship (Marie Galante/Weill) From: M.Ted Date: 18 May 05 - 08:58 PM I have an MP3 file I can send you--Lenya singing in French, with Weill playing piano--if that will be of help. I would transcribe, but I am not good with the French, and its words are much confusing to me. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Wait For A Ship (Marie Galante/Weill) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 19 May 05 - 01:47 PM There is the Broadway effort "Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill," original cast recording Paramount PAS-4000. Disc 2 has the song by Lotte Lenya (Set reissued on Pearl). It is sung in French. There is a clip at Amazon of the song. A cd with Lotte Lenya singing this and other Weill songs seems to be out-of-print. Can't find anything on google. Somewhere I have the Lenya recording, but my ear for French is probably much worse than M Ted's. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Wait For A Ship (Marie Galante/Weill) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 20 May 05 - 01:20 PM Joe, thanks for getting to the booklet before I did. My copy has a Decca label (Canada and UK?) rather than London. The disc is still available. A wonderful set which I have just dug out from the closet. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I Wait For A Ship (Marie Galante/Weill) From: GUEST Date: 26 Feb 10 - 11:29 PM This verse is a version from an old "From Berlin to Broadway" collection of Weill from the 70's - the lp mentioned that the whistled opening melody was used as a signal by the French Resistance . . . "I wait for a ship that's sailing to me, That's calling to me, Across a lonely sea. A sea filled with tears that flow from my eyes, Its sails billow on with my sighs. And if the waves should try to sink it, I'll never falter, not a bit. I'll carry it home like a baby, Back to Bordeaux, safe in my arms." |
