Subject: New CD: In Harmony's Way
From: radriano
Date: 27 May 05 - 12:23 PM

Eighteen San Francisco Bay Area singers have gotten together to record some of their favorite chorus songs from the American and British Isles traditions in a CD collection called In Harmony's Way. The project seeks to document the rich local heritage of a cappella singing, and to share these wonderful songs with a greater audience. The rehearsal, recording process and concert are being filmed by El Mundo Bueno Studios for a documentary on the Bay Area folk singing community.

Participants of In Harmony's Way are Richard Adrianowicz, Steve Baughman, Michael and Shay Black, Susan Frank, Sylvia Herold, Lani Herrmann, Holdstock and MacLeod, Kim Hughes, Arlene Immerman, Peter Kasin, Oak Ash & Thorn, Riggy Rackin, Ed Silberman and Pam Swan.
The project celebrates its culmination in a rousing evening of song where the audience is invited to join in as much as they wish. So come support Bay Area traditional music and lift your voices with your friends and neighbors of In Harmony's Way at 8:00 pm on July 8th at the Freight and Salvage Coffee House in Berkeley. Tickets available at The Freight or via their website www.thefreight.org.

Very cool title! Wish I could be there...in fact, if I hit the lottery between now and then, we'll take a trip to San Francisco and will be there!

Any idea where/when we could see the film? I hope it'll be on TV (PBS?), or at least be available on DVD ~ documentaries rarely get a wide theatrical release; even the Oscar-winning "best" documentairies rarely get shown in our medium-sized city.

Hi PoppaGator,

Well, the film won't be complete until the concert at the Freight and Salvage Coffeehouse is filmed. I'll post info on where it will be aired when it becomes available to me.

Thanks, Radriano!
Two typo corrections: The song I lead is "Hob Y Derri Dando." Lani's last name is spelled "Herrmann."
This project was conceived and put together by San Francisco Celtic guitarist Steve Baughman. His idea is that this would be a CD listeners would hopefully say to themselves, "Hey, I want to learn that song!" Each of us picked our own material. It was great fun, and I'm really looking forward to this concert. Audience participation is not only encouraged, but is the whole point of this project.

This is one fun project! I'm on it so I've got a vested interesd. But it's hard to find 18 people all singing acappella chorus while a single person leads. Really fun.

What a great line-up of songs--and singers. I'm jealous as hell---but on the wrong coast.
We do some of them--but not all, by a long shot.

Congratulations!--looking forward to seeing the film.

I'm amazed you found it possible for 18 peoples' schedules to co-incide for the length of a recording project. In my experience it only happens if the group has already existed, as a group, for quite a while.

Salutations and felicitations to Steve, Peter, Richard, Shay, the Swans et al. This has been an absorbing project for a long time for all involved. I hope the CD is a great success, and that people are hootin', hollerin' and piled to the rafters at the Freight and Salvage. I hope PBS airs the film, a big Hollywood producer watches it and...oh never mind.

Congrats to all!

Miriam

Thank you, sixtieschick! Yes, it was quite a feat to get everyone together, and on a relatively short time span between first rehearsal and final recording session. Was it late February when we had the first meeting, when we all brought favorite chorus songs with us, sat in a circle, and went around, each singer presenting which songs they wanted to do? Steve's enthusiasm and organizational skills, plus his penchant for seemingly endless numbers of emails, got us all together. No group of strangers, though, for the most part, as many of us have known each other for years from campouts, singarounds, and sessions. It was the first time, though, that we all rehearsed and recorded together.

During the time we were rehearsing, Steve thought it would be a good idea to add variety to the arrangements by having a few of the songs done in small ensembles, with each singer on lead choosing their ensemble. It proved a very good idea, I think, by succesfully adding the variety of texture Steve was looking for. I'm very honored to be a part of this project.

Hey, some of my favorite people are on that CD.
Abnother singer on the CD, Ed Silberman, stops by Mudcat on occasion. So does Dick Holdstock.
Susan Frank's DAD, DADGBE, is a reasonably regular person around here, by the way. He's one damn good stringpicker, and his daughter is one damn good singer. Lots of other good singers there, too.

My apologies for leaving the infrequent Mudcatters out of my original list. My brain is like a sieve these days.

Kudos to Steve Baughman for organizing and producing the project. And if that wasn't difficult enough, he's one of the singers too! It was amazing to get all the singers together at the same time for rehearsals and recording dates. I'm still dizzy from the flurry of e-mails that got passed back and forth. And also many kudos to Derek Bianchi at Muscletone Studios in Berkeley, California. Derek's phenomenal recording and mixing skills were crucial to the project.

It was an honor to be included in this group of singers. This recording is just a taste of the great folk/traditional talent in the San Francisco Bay area and I want to acknowledge the many fine singers who were not a part of this project.

I just got my copy and may I say CONGRATULATIONS!!! For a job well done. The diversity of songs, voices, and moods, the outstanding harmony singing, the occasional "outtakes" (just enough to be fun!) the overall outstanding quality of the music and the recording- it's a wonderful cd, and is likely to stay in my car cd player for some time. I've never been to San Francisco, but if this is the sort of stuff that's going on, I'll have to find a way there!

I sing with their stepchild, "In Harmony's Way Up in Auburn." We're going strong, too.
