Mainbrace, the shanty singing duo from Wales have their long-delayed CD out at last, good news for their many fans who have been waiting to hear it. Mainbrace are Mike O'Leary Johns and Tony Fraser, two of the strongest voices around. They sing their way through 17 tracks including '5 O'clock in the Morning', 'Pitenweem Fisherwife's Song', Eagle Alley, Pull for the Shore, and the title track 'The Sailor's Day'. Jerry Epstein, Dan Milner, and Jeff Warner add weight to the choruses. It's out on Minstrel Records. I don't have the catalogue number to hand. Highly recommended.

And do not neglect the stellar "Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still," one of the most beautiful songs of the Warner collection.

I bought a copy (long waited for!) from Jerry Epstein at Indian Neck a few weeks ago -- and we listened to it halfway across Massachusetts on the way home. Worth waiting for!

By the way, burl, I have some photos of Mike and Tony from the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival a year and a half ago. I could send them along to you if you PM me an email address.

Celtaddict, you are correct.'Her Bright Smile Haunts me still' is one of the highlights of the album. A beautiful song, and their version of it shows that Mainbrace can sing lyrically as well as powerfully. Burl.

Although I haven't checked with Dick Greenhaus I'm pretty sure that Camsco will carry it Even if it's not in stock, knowing Dick I'm certain he could get it for you. Minstrel Records website, www.minstrelrecords.com doesn't mention it yet, but there it gives full ordering information on their releases so it's worth checking out. British fans will find it on the Chantey cabin website, www.chanteycabin.co.uk

The best thing about Mainbrace, about Mike and Tony, is that they really sound like sailors. This is a very nice recording.

I just got this CD a couple of weeks ago, and it is first-rate. Mike and Tony have put together a beautiful recording, with simple, unadorned arrangements which bring out the essence of each song. There is an introspective quality to much of this recording, at least to my ears, in contrast to those that have the urge to bellow out every sea song at full force.They have obviously taken great care in choosing their material; a mix of standards and lesser known songs, something always welcome in new sea music recordings! This is one of those recordings that keeps the tradition alive through presenting interesting songs, expertly performed.
