D' Cats:

I'm attempting to have tracks from our demo CD play as background music on our website. I have .cda files and .wma files, but neither type shows up as a music file so I can attach it to the page. I suspect I'll have to convert the files to MP3s, and I know there are several conversion packages. Which one(s) seem to be the best?

Thank you much,

V

audacity. you are looking for a program that allows you to "rip" CD tracks. Audacity will allow you to save the tracks as wav or mp3 - it will also allow you to trim them to whatever length you want, etc.

"play as background music on our website."

Don't... most people out here are still not comfotable with sound coming at them unbidden from web sites... I know I can't turn web-site audio off quickly enough.... Instead assemble a clips page where people can go and click each sample that they want to hear...

" convert the files to MP3s"
I have yet to find a format that JetAudio won't convert...   But it's more than just an audio converter... it's a whole media suite...

Good luck eh!

background music on your site virtually garuantees that anyone on dial-up (and there are still quite a few) will avoid the site like the plague.

Wow!

Thanks for the info and the advice...I've just d/l audacity.

I'll make "click to play" clips instead of bg music...

I am with Clint Hammond on this--don't do the background thing--it is more than annoying--streaming audio takes up extra bandwith and can slow down and even lock up a browser if any of the related servers are overloaded--

also, background music can play even when the page is in the background--sometimes I've had music from three or four different pages start to blare at me at the same time because I didn't realize that there was streaming music attached to the pages I was opening--

If you want, you can give people the option of opening a music stream when they are on your page--

Switch does the job, basic version downloadable free from www.nch.com. Some prudent advice above, but presumably people have come to your site to hear music anyway.

A sad example I just remembered-- a few years back, I went to a site that was reported to have MIDIs of twenty of the most popular tangos. It had them all right, and all twenty started playing at once when the page started to open--

And, yes, let us know when you clips are up--

Reminds me a bit of a radio built by someone (?Peter Stampfel) of the Holy Modal Rounders which apparently received played all the radio stations simultaneously!
