I'm curious, with songs based on the Waggoner's Lad and Gallis Pole (for example) among others, would people consider this album as folk rock?
An entirely idle question, just interested in what people think.

Folk-rock-blues-whatever. Since I've Been Loving You is still my all time favourite rock song. Regardless of what folks will doubtless say about the vocal qualities, it doesn't take away from the spirit and intent of the music. Gallows Pole is a classic in my mind too.

Peace, Mooh.

the vocal qualities are brilliant. Plant had a great voice, and still has, even though he cant quite reach those high notes now.

since ive been loving you is my favourite zep track too, along with the rain song.

zeppelin covered A LOT of blues songs, for example, travelling riverside blues, and had a lot of folk stuff, Zep III being full of this.
Page is very much into the old blues singers and guitarists along with folk music which plant is also fond of. plant also takes heavy influences from world music, eg. kashmir, and his recent Mighty Rearranger album - which is a brilliant album BTW.

Well, Led Zep is certainly "blues-rock," and blues is certainly part of folk music, so according to some sort of logic, one might be forced to admit LZ to the category of "folk-rock."

To me, though, "folk-rock" denotes something a little less hard-edge than Zep, Cream, the Stones, or even Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, or for that matter Paul Butterfield. To me, examples of folk-rock would be the Byrds, Lovin' Spoonful, Dylan and the Band, maybe even the Grateful Dead (though perhaps not their entire repertoire).

Well, I meant this particular album which is softer than most of theirs, and includes several bona-fide folk songs.

Any folkie with a penchant for led zep should acquire the Page/Plant album No Quarter, where they revisit many old zep tunes, including gallows pole, and add far more folkie arrangements. A Hurdy-Gurdy played by Nigel Eaton and a wizard like melodeon player.

Its my favourite "led zep" album

I saw Nigel playing hurdy at a page plant concert at wembley Thousands of heavy mettalists going crazy to a eightminute hurdy solo, fantastic.
When trying to catogorise the music one should remember that the term "Heavy metal" was first used to describe them there can be discusion what the term means now along with "speed metal" "thrash metal" "hm overkill" "death metal" etc etc. but the point I put forward is that as the term was invited to describe them then Led Zep IS heavy metal. I really like III. It sure has a Folk flavour to it. I have always preferred Page's acoustic work to his electric. Since I've Been Loving you is a great track, but am I the only one who hears the sqeak of Bonham's foot pedal in it? It drives me crazy.

It's his bass drum pedal.
It has stuck out for years for me.

I think LZ3 in particular is probably their best. It's got Gallow's Pole, and That's The Way, but then there's Immigrant Song which is nothing but RAWK!

Not my favourite band or my favourite album, but I did like III. Gallows Pole is excellent - as intelligent a reading of a traditional song as has ever come from a rock band. It is worth noting that as well as being a fine classical guitarist, Page was also seriously into using a variety of guitar tunings. That is very much in the spirit of both folkies and the old blues masters.

Led Zepp is ace for me. £ is one of the best. Im lucky enough to have a VERY powerful system in my car and really enjoy giving it what for sometimes. I was at the Albert Hall when they got the world's loudest band title. My ears still cringe! My car gets louder though. 145 Db. Technology!

I put them on for this discussion. I have always loved LZ II. My favorite is "Shook me all night long", but our wedding song was "Thank You". Well, I couldn't play "Shook Me" as a wedding song, could I??

My husband, Honey, is a RnR drummer and he thinks he's Bonham ;-)

I can't wait to see if he can find the foot pedal in "Since I've Been Loving you".

Love, Annamill

I prefer "Houses of The Holy" and "In Through The Out Door" and my favourite track would have to be "IN THE EVENING" but all of them are quite good really- c'mon "STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN" and "KASHMIR" ? I was more a fan of Deep Purple at the time though.

me too! i love perfect strangers, and the newest album, Bananas, if you havent heard it, please do so! it is an outstanding return to form, even without Blackmore! Steve Morse does a grand job, and the songs are all brilliant.

you may remember a couple years back about the space ship that crash landed back on earth, or something, and killed the crew, well, there is a 1 and half minute guitar track on Bananas that ends the album called "Contact Lost" that is a tribute to them, a very touching track

Intersting tangent isn't it, to go to Deep Purple from Zep. I mean, Zep really did tons of amazing covers of blues and folk music, but Deep Purple started out that way too. Particularly when they were in their first "art rock" incarnation, with Shades of Deep Purple and the one with the Bosch (sp?) painting on the cover. The later "metal" stuff from "In Rock" on was great too, though it took me awhile to get used to. But from those guys to diggin' Zep wasn't much of a stretch. sb

Nobody ever mentions the album "Presence." Achilles' Last Stand rivals Kashmir for their "epic" category. Tea For One is one of their best "blues" numbers, hearking back to some of the psychedelic blues covers they did on the first album.

Overall, the album features some of Page's absolute best guitar work, and rocks harder than anything they did since the first album.

While on the subject of blues-folk, I have always been a great fan of blues but play trad irish. May sound a strange mix but I have found over the years I'm not alone. I was able to purchase John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers new album last week 'Road Dogs' again softer than the old John Mayall approach and in my oppinion sounds in places a ballance between folky and blues. One line in a song pays tribute to LZ's genius. Are our blues bands mellowing? either way a fantastic cd.

Going back to the Deep Purple tracks -what about "Anyone's Daughter" off the "Fireball" album, I really love that track and "Highway Star" off my own personal favourite "Machine Head".

Re Deep Purple...My favourite song is Lazy, and it would be in my top ten if I actually cared about such ranking.

Re Led Zeppelin...I agree with Guest that Presence is one of the best. I also like the BBC recordings. Live bands like that have a long and dignified history in the blues.

David Gilmour of Pink Floyd uses 90% of the time the pentatonic scale, which means its easy once you know it to work out solos... even though you will NEVER be able to play them like Dave does. also Gilmour is a huge fan of old blues musicians and the band name pink floyd is from two old bluesmen pink anderson and floyd council.

ive seen page in interviews saying how much he likes bert jansch and martin carthy along with other world acoustic music. some of his best acoustic stuff can be found on the recent led zeppelin double dvd, excellent versions of going to california, thank you, etc. and also on the UnLedded DVD - very interesting - with page and plant sat in the streets of morocco just jamming with the street musicians - fantastic stuff.

not long to go now until the reunion of the floyd.

The term "heavy metal" wasn't coined to describe Led Zeppelin. It was derived from the line in Steppenwolf's hit Born to be Wild, "I like smoke and lightning/ heavy metal thunder".

Heavy Metal -A military term for heavily fortified tanks/guns etc. The expression first appears in print in the 1964 'Nova Express' novel by William Burroughs. It isn't clear who first appropriated the term to refer to loud rock music. The US rock music critic Lester Bangs, while working for Creem magazine, used the expression in 1968 to describe a performance of the band MC5 (Motor City Five) from Detroit and many regard this as the origin of the current usage of the phrase. Soon other bands, many of which used 'heavy metal' imagery in their names and song lyrics, e.g. Led Zeppelin, Iron Butterfly, were labelled as such.
