Plant had a great voice, and still has, even though he cant quite reach those high notes now. since ive been loving you is my favourite zep track too, along with the rain song. zeppelin covered A LOT of blues songs, for example, travelling riverside blues, and had a lot of folk stuff, Zep III being full of this. Page is very much into the old blues singers and guitarists along with folk music which plant is also fond of. plant also takes heavy influences from world music, eg. kashmir, and his recent Mighty Rearranger album - which is a brilliant album BTW. |

To me, though, "folk-rock" denotes something a little less hard-edge than Zep, Cream, the Stones, or even Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, or for that matter Paul Butterfield. To me, examples of folk-rock would be the Byrds, Lovin' Spoonful, Dylan and the Band, maybe even the Grateful Dead (though perhaps not their entire repertoire). |

When trying to catogorise the music one should remember that the term "Heavy metal" was first used to describe them there can be discusion what the term means now along with "speed metal" "thrash metal" "hm overkill" "death metal" etc etc. but the point I put forward is that as the term was invited to describe them then Led Zep IS heavy metal. Gallows Pole is excellent - as intelligent a reading of a traditional song as has ever come from a rock band. It is worth noting that as well as being a fine classical guitarist, Page was also seriously into using a variety of guitar tunings. That is very much in the spirit of both folkies and the old blues masters. |

Steve Morse does a grand job, and the songs are all brilliant. you may remember a couple years back about the space ship that crash landed back on earth, or something, and killed the crew, well, there is a 1 and half minute guitar track on Bananas that ends the album called "Contact Lost" that is a tribute to them, a very touching track |

I mean, Zep really did tons of amazing covers of blues and folk music, but Deep Purple started out that way too. Particularly when they were in their first "art rock" incarnation, with Shades of Deep Purple and the one with the Bosch (sp?) painting on the cover. The later "metal" stuff from "In Rock" on was great too, though it took me awhile to get used to. But from those guys to diggin' Zep wasn't much of a stretch. sb |

Tea For One is one of their best "blues" numbers, hearking back to some of the psychedelic blues covers they did on the first album. Overall, the album features some of Page's absolute best guitar work, and rocks harder than anything they did since the first album. |

May sound a strange mix but I have found over the years I'm not alone. I was able to purchase John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers new album last week 'Road Dogs' again softer than the old John Mayall approach and in my oppinion sounds in places a ballance between folky and blues. One line in a song pays tribute to LZ's genius. Are our blues bands mellowing? either way a fantastic cd. songsmith |

Subject: RE: Review: Led Zeppelin III From: s6k Date: 21 Jun 05 - 10:44 AM David Gilmour of Pink Floyd uses 90% of the time the pentatonic scale, which means its easy once you know it to work out solos... even though you will NEVER be able to play them like Dave does. also Gilmour is a huge fan of old blues musicians and the band name pink floyd is from two old bluesmen pink anderson and floyd council. ive seen page in interviews saying how much he likes bert jansch and martin carthy along with other world acoustic music. some of his best acoustic stuff can be found on the recent led zeppelin double dvd, excellent versions of going to california, thank you, etc. and also on the UnLedded DVD - very interesting - with page and plant sat in the streets of morocco just jamming with the street musicians - fantastic stuff. not long to go now until the reunion of the floyd. |

It isn't clear who first appropriated the term to refer to loud rock music. The US rock music critic Lester Bangs, while working for Creem magazine, used the expression in 1968 to describe a performance of the band MC5 (Motor City Five) from Detroit and many regard this as the origin of the current usage of the phrase. Soon other bands, many of which used 'heavy metal' imagery in their names and song lyrics, e.g. Led Zeppelin, Iron Butterfly, were labelled as such. |
