Subject: Theo Bikel - looking for copy of album:

Hi all,

A friend mentioned a Theodore Bikel album that she used to play for her kids years ago: Folk Songs from Just About Everywhere by Theodore Bikel & Geula Gill.

I found that the album is available at an Ebay store - for $16 with shipping. I was wodering if someone had the album and could make me a cassette or CD copy of it for a little less $$.

Thanks!

Blackcatter

I don't know - they can hook people up with albums currently in print - but this hasn't been in probably 40 years.

Can't see 16bucks as an obstacle, this isn't really a P2P site, some people on here make and sell albums of their own, I know what a good idea they'd think it was.

Check Camsco -- lots of things are back as CDs, and Dick can get them.

A 75 year old friend wants it - I told her about the album available on Ebay, but she probably doesn't need it that much. Yes, maybe that just "tough cookies" but she would have to get someone to make a tape of the album since she doesn't have a phonograph (I could do it, but hurricane #2 last year killed my record player).

Since the person who is selling the album isn't going to be giving Bikel, etal any of the $16 bucks, Bikel would be just as much ahead if someone who had the album copied it for me and I give them the cost & mail.

I thought I'd do something nice for a person who has given so much for my church (she'd been a member of my church longer than any other living person). Unfortunately, $16 (half of that shipping) is too much money for me to spend right now.

By the way, I first came to Mudcat in 1999. I know it's not a P2P site.

Sorry to unload, but please John - leave your assumptions to yourself.

Well pardon me for being so wrong, I know Theo Bikel's family won't see a cent out of it, it's just a principal, and one which I've seen other people try to uphold on here. Or does it depend on whether the artiste is dead or alive.
Sorry to unload on you too, but I see double standards operating yet again.
Giok.

Giok, I'd generally agree with you, and I normally buy copies of favorite music to share with friends. However, I also think that the artists and/or recording company have a responsibility to keep a recording in print if they want to continue to receive royalties.

Elektra EKL-161, a copy of which, c1960, sits by me as I type, has never (at least as far as I can tell) been republished in any form other than vinyl. Elektra itself was absorbed by Atlantic Records, then by Warner Brothers Records, then by AOL Time Warner, and finally died a couple of years ago. There probably are used copies out there, and the artists get exactly the same royalty from a sale of a used copy as they do if I copy mine and give it to someone else as a mitzva.

BTW, Theodore Bikel is very much alive and actively performing. I'm not sure about Geula Gill.

Actually this brings up an interesting question about buying CD's, etc on E-Bay or Half.com . I hadn't given it a second thought, but it IS recycling music and theoretically people could be buying an album, making a copy, and then selling the original. Probably isn't much that can be done about it.

The difference with selling an LP in an auction and making dubs is that the original LP is a single copy. The owner sells it to someone else. Granted, the original artist does not see any of the money, but the single album is the only copy being exchanged.   With a dub, someone is creating additional copies and circumventing the artists ability to sell recordings to meet the demand.

The way I understand the law, you can create a personal copy. Whenever you buy a cassette or a blank CD-R a portion of that purchase is taxed to the recording industry (at least here in the U.S.) The manufacturers of the media are paying copyright royalties. That does not extend to creating multiple copies.

In the case of this particular recording, if there enough interest, someone could re-release the recording - perhaps a company like Folk Era or Bikel himself. When copies are exchanged freely, the market for the product is lost.

Granted this is a very esoteric recording and the interest is minimal to a wider market, but that is the way the theory works.

As far as I've been able to determine, the only Theo Bikel CD is a delightful compilation from Rhino Handmade called Theodore Bikel's Treasury Of Yiddish Theatre And Folk Songs. I checked Bear Family, and they had no Bikel recordings.
There oughta be more.

I do agree with nearly all that was said above and have far too many original albums in my collection.

I doubt that there will ever be a solution that is satisfactory to all concerned. I realize I risked offending someone by making my request and potentially because I have trouble with the whole system since there are a few people who have become millionaires by just running/owning the record companies. When even established artists receive only a small percentage of the purchase price of an album, it is frustrating to imagine how little of the price of a new CD is going to the persons who are the true creative forces.

There are several more beyond what Joe has been able to determine. The ones that I have are:

"Classic Jewish Holiday & Shabbat Songs (Sameach)" and "Theodore Bikel Sings Jewish Folk Songs/Sings More Jewish Folk Songs (Bainbridge)." The latter combines two of his old Elektra LPs onto one CD.

There are others. Check in Judaica stores that sell CDs.

I also have a couple of holiday CDs that Theo shares with other artists:

"A Taste of Chanukah (Rounder)" and "A Taste of Passover (Rounder)."

The first folk music concert I ever went to wes Theo Bikel - he was very entertaining - remember "Digging the We'uns?"- I though this was all I could do, until I found out that the Gate of Horn had a section for those under 21.

Sure would be great if the "dead" material could go to the Smithsonian and, as with Folkway, one could buy the out-of-print material. Folk Era does some of this, but there should be a place for this material to go. I would think there would be some financial advantage for the record companies to donate the material to a public site.

Is any group promoting this? Maybe something for Folk Alliance?

Chris - Folk Era buys the rights to albums and re-issues them. The Smithsonian aquired rights to several record labels in addition to Folkways, but what you are suggesting is very different. While most of these albums are out of print, that does not mean the license has expired. Even the Smithsonian sells the material they own to the public.

When companies fold, merge, etc, some rights go one way, some another. Sometimes the copyrights and lisenses that a defunct company held are no longer available because of contractual restrictions that have nothing to do with music or recording. Sometimes, the new owners are not even aware that they own it--someone with a lot of time and patience has to do a lot of detective work getting the necessary clearances to make it possible to re-issue a lot of this sort of stuff, and that assumes that someone actually has the masters.

As far as I know, anyone who wants to tape the album and give the tape to Blackcatter has every legal right to do so, and they may make a reasonable number of copies and give them to others, as well. It turns out that "Mix CD's" are the latest thing in Wedding favors, on this principle--

Subject: RE: Theo Bikel - looking for copy of album:

M.Ted - unfortunately the record companies are going after those "mix CD's" now. Here is an example - piracy

Because the industry is losing so much money to piracy, they are going after every nickel and dime they can get. They are now producing CD's that can't be copied.

Part of the problem is the digital age we live in. When mix tapes first became popular, they were on cassette tapes. Analog copies and cassette tape hiss did not make for the best sound. Today, you can create copies on CD that are virtually identical to the sound on the original. The record industry is fighting back.

This is just the big picture. The probability of someone going after a person for dubbing a several decades old Theo Bikel CD is slim. You are more likely to win the lottery than to get in trouble for it.

I received two new Theo Bikel CD's in the mail today, so I thought it was a good excuse to refresh this thread. The official Theodore Bikel Website is http://www.bikel.com/. It's an interesting site and it has a few MP3 downloads, but I was disappointed that it did not have a discography. Most of Theo's recordings were on Elektra, so you can glean information about his recordings from this Elektra discography. Sony also has a Bikel Web page with some recording clips.
In subsequent messages, I'll post the CD track listings that I find.

Subject: Bikel & the Pennywhistlers: Songs of the Earth
From: Joe Offer
Date: 09 Nov 07 - 07:14 PM

Here's one I got today, a 2007 reissue on the Collectors' Choice label. Collectors' Choice doesn't have as many two-fer albums as it used to have, and that's a shame.

Songs Of The Earth: Theodore Bikel and The Pennywhistlers
Elektra EKL 326 (Mono) EKS 7326 (Stereo) [1967 release]
Production: Alex Hassilev

1 Niska Banja (Serbian)
2 Oi, Tumani Mayi (Russian - Isakovsky/Zakharov)
3 Dobryvechir Diwchyno (Ukrainian)
4 Sjaj Mesece (Serbian)
5 Get Up Get Out (Scottish - Matt McGinn)
6 Sweetest Dreams Be Thine (Jim Friedman)
7 Segaba La Niña (Spanish)
8 Kaloda Duda (Russian)
9 Tino Mori / Sva Nok Le Nado (Macedonian)
10 Thalassa (Greek)
11 Purim Suite (Yiddish - Manger/Seltzer)
12 Kudryafchik Maladoi (Russian)

The Pennywhistlers are Francine Brown, Shelley Cook, Joyce Gluck, Alice Kogan, Deborah Lesser, Ethel Raim and Dina Silberman.

The album does have notes and lyrics - byt they are a reduced copy of the LP jacket and are almost illegible with a magnifying glass.

Jim McGuinn plays banjo on this album.

No lyrics, but at least the CD notes are legible.

Subject: Bikel:In My Own Lifetime: 12 Musical Thtr Classics
From: Joe Offer
Date: 09 Nov 07 - 08:13 PM

I stay away from 12-cut CDs, but this one does sound like a good one. Here's the album description from http://www.jewishjukebox.com
In My Own Lifetime: 12 Musical Theater Classics: A musical theater fan's dream come true!!! All newly recorded songs produced by Craig Taubman. Born 1924 in Vienna, Theodore Bikel was thirteen when he and his parents left Austria for Palestine. Fluent in Hebrew, Yiddish, and German with a respectable command of English and French, he intended to study and eventually teach comparative linguistics. In 1946 Bikel entered London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from which he graduated with honors two years later. It was also at this time that he began to develop a serious interest in the guitar and folk music. But he was first to make his mark as an actor. Sir Laurence Olivier was so impressed with Bikel's performance in several small London theatre productions that he offered him a role in his production of A Streetcar Named Desire, starring Vivien Leigh. Bikel soon took over the second male lead, Mitch, in the play. From Streetcar on, Theodore Bikel's career has been illuminated by superior stage and screen portrayals. In London he won acclaim playing the Russian Colonel in Ustinov's The Love Of Four Colonels and on Broadway his roster of memorable performances includes Tonight in Samarkand, The Rope Dancers, The Lark and the original Broadway production of The Sound Of Music in which he created the role of Baron con Trapp. Nationally he starred in a number of other plays, including tours of Zorba and Fiddler on the Roof. After having played the role of Tevye over 2,000 times since 1967, Bikel's Tevye continues to garner the highest praise from audiences and critics nation-wide whenever he repeats the role. Theodore Bikel's television career in the United States spans some 35 years. His roles on TV cover an amazing range of characterizations: from a Scottish policeman in Alfred Hitchcock Presents to a Mad Bomber, a South African Boer on the hunt in New York (Equalizer) to Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, to Henry Kissinger in The Final Days and the role which earned him his L.A. Emmy award in 1988 for his role on public television as the 82-year old Harris Newmark. Theodore Bikel has recorded 20 record albums mostly for the Elektra label in addition to a few releases on Columbia, Peter Pan, and Reprise. He is also an accomplished translator of song lyrics. Theodore Bikel was a co-founder of the Newport Folk Festival. (Copyright 2006)

In My Lifetime is really a great album---and exemplifies the diversity of Bikel's talents.

I have played it many a time on my Sunday Simcha program on WFDU in addition to his other material over all these years. Having seen him act in a brilliant play about 5 yrs ago and having heard his work on record and seen it on TV (an early Naked City episode--remember that)one can only realize how vastly talented he is.

The CD in question can be had had from the Jewish Music Group--

Now for the shameless self promotion---Sunday Simcha airs every Sunday at 10 AM Eastern Time on WFDU 89.1 FM in New Jersey and streams on the web at http://www.wfdu.fm

Another good one, and one of the first that I copied from my old LPs, is Bikel with Geula Gill - Folksongs from Just About Everywhere. I'm not sure if anyone has re-released it; Amazon doesn't list any availability other than an LP.

"Bikel made his name as a singer of Jewish and Eastern European songs, but he also recorded a good number of English-language folk songs," Joe wrote above.

True. But in fact, versatile genius that he is, he first made his name as an actor ~~ founded the Cameri Theatre in Tel Aviv in his very early 20s, before studying at London's RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art), then took over the lead, by invitation of Laurence Olivier, in A Streetcar Named Desire in the London productions which starred Olivier's wife Vivien Leigh.

Starred in revival tour of Fiddler On The Roof, when Chaim Topol had to drop out, at age of 85! Has in fact played Tevye more times than any other actor, including Topol.

What a man. Why isn't he President, that's what I want to know! (Apart from the birth requirement, that is...)

~Michael~
