These are Ernie Sheldon's original lyrics:

Bring Me A Rose

Bring me a rose in the wintertime
When it's hard to find
Bring me a rose in the wintertime
I got roses on my mind
Well a rose is sweet, most any time and yet
Bring me a rose in the wintertime
How easy we forget

Bring me a smile when I'm far from home
When it's hard to find
Bring me a smile when I'm far from home
I got smilin' on my mind
Well a smile is sweet, most any time and yet
Bring me a smile when I'm far from home
How easy we forget

Bring me a kiss when my baby's grown
When it's hard to find
Bring me a kiss when my baby's grown
I got kisses on my mind
Well a kiss is sweet, most any time and yet
Bring me a kiss when my baby's grown
How easy we forget

Bring me a love in the autumn years
When it's hard to find
Bring me a love in the autumn years
Love is on my mind
Well love is sweet, most any time and yet
Bring me a love in the autumn years
How easy we forget

Bring me peace when there's talk of war
When it's hard to find
Bring me peace when there's talk of war
Peace is on my mind
Well peace is sweet, most any time and yet
Bring me peace when there's talk of war
How easy we forget
How easy we forget

He recorded this himself when he was with The Limeliters (he replaced Glenn Yarbrough).

Bring Me A Rose – Ernie Sheldon
Recorded by The Womenfolk (1964)

Bring me a rose in the wintertime
When it's hard to find
Bring me a rose in the wintertime
I've got roses on my mind
A rose is sweet
Most any time, and yet
Bring me a rose in the wintertime
It's so easy to forget

Bring me a friend when I'm far from home
When it's hard to find
Bring me a friend when I'm far from home
I've got friendship on my mind
A friend is sweet … It's so easy to forget

Bring me a smile when I'm all alone
When it's hard to find
Bring me a smile when I'm all alone
I've got smiles on my mind
A smile is sweet … It's so easy to forget

Bring me a kiss when my child is grown
When it's hard to find
Bring me a kiss when my child is grown
I've got kisses on my mind
A kiss is sweet … It's so easy to forget

Bring me love in my autumn years
When it's hard to find.
Bring me love in my autumn years
I've got loving on my mind.
Love is sweet … It's so easy to forget

Bring me peace when there's talk of war
When it's hard to find
Bring me peace when there's talk of war
Peace is on my mind
Peace is sweet … It's so easy to forget

Hi:
Ernie is alive and well living in Palo Alto, CA. He doesn't use the computer much so I am writing this for those of you who are interested. I am attaching the music and lyrics of
Bring me a Rose for anyone interested in using it. It has been adopted by churches and song groups, as well as individual singers. There is something lovely about the idea that many people have caught. Here it is.

That should do the trick, Frank. I'll vouch for the quality of My Song Is My Weapon. It's a must-read for anyone interested in activist songs, part of the "Music in American Life" Series from University of Illinois Press. Click here for information and contact information for Dr. Lieberman.

I think that Ernie may be in California now. I think he was living around Stanford. His wife Ann is a professor and they have been going back and forth from California to New York for her work.

I haven't heard from Ernie for a while so I would be interested to know where he is too. I do know this, wherever he is, he's probably on the tennis court.

Ernie's daughter Robbie lives in St. Louis and teaches there.
She has written some great folk music books that are not well known but well worth the time to read. Her book "My Song Is My Weapon" is about the rise of topical, social and Leftist songs in America.

Hi, WW-
We were talking about Ernie Sheldon just a few weeks ago, in a discussion of his song, "Bring Me a Rose (in the wintertime)" (see links above). Don't think anybody knew how to reach him, but maybe this new thread will bring out somebody who can help.
You might want to make a visit to the Gateway Singers Website. Maybe they can help you locate Ernie.
